I wish someone had warned me about Nick Caves second (fourth?) encore.... damn well missed the ship song and stagger Lee. Teach me for being too keen for air. Not this time...
My two favourite Nick Cave songs - not to rub it in, but holy crap they were great. I just don't leave until the lights come on and the house music starts playing - unless I can't stand anymore.
Check out the number of songs about Stagger / Stacker Lee in the link below. The one Nick does is a cover, eh? Should've gone in that covers thread.. even if I don't know the original.
His version of Leadbelly's "Looky Looky Yonder / Black Betty" is much better than either Ram Jam or fucken Spiderbait, too. Not better than Leadbelly, but more faithful, more twisted and less disco-for-rednecks.
Oooh I never knew it was a cover. I mean, I thought it was inspired by an old traditional song - but I thought all the dirtiness was Nick Cave's addition, not that it was there originally. Thanks Jet!
Having read the stuff at the second link, it sounds like it was a jam on some written down lyrics out of folklore, so maybe doesn't constitute a cover, really...
no nyc, no stellar, no c'mere.
v. good show however.
i wish there was 2nd encore, but the house lights did go on, and it looked pretty over..
anyone know if they turned up at the afterparty in the end?
Oh yeah, The Bays, just to hi-jack the thread further...
If you want to marvel at how someone who listens to so much of the stuff you like still just plays average dubby crap like every other Kiwi electronic wonk, come see me play some live tunes (or some Freecell? who can tell?) at the Odeon Lounge, Sunday 14th. Will be my only gig in Auckland for a couple of years, as I'm going further abroad. Will be an early affair, although not sure exactly how early yet.
Hey, it would be unpatriotic to not be self-deprecating in the middle of my self-promotion, wouldn't it?? Of course I'm proud of what I've done.. still doing more stuff along the lines of 'think about it later' than 'is love'..
Bodega Friday 26th, sets by Montano and me solo as Jet Jaguar, along with old friends / While You Were Sleeping stalwarts Group Five & Aquaboogie. Looking forward to it heaps. This will tie in to the impending Montano release, whether or not we actually have the pressed CDs in our hot little hands on on the night. Heard the master, seen most of the artwork... pretty excited about it. I should cobble together some exciting Artist announcements. Whoopee!
I hear you played that interview a while back, if I have you pegged right?
hah... no. miles played one ages ago for unchartered- maybe thats what they heard. still waiting for a release date and to catch up with shannon. Also hate the sound of mini disc recording, so might have to hit you up when you're here. I be in touch.
The 'inevitable encore' is so contrived. . . personally, i'd rather bands came on stage, played their set, including all the songs they didn't play in the main set, but always intended playing anyway, and then got the fuck off the stage...
its so much cooler when a band gives all the concert you need without the facade of 'rewarding' you for being a great crowd and coming back on after 'finishing'.
if there is an encore, they shouldn't be deliberately saving songs for it either - play some unusual ones or covers - that would be a reward to the fans for sticking around and screaming their heads off...
During the encore in dunners the other night, Tim appeared to actually make an executive decision, confusing both neil and the roadies. Quite a cool moment. Especially after neil worked out what was going on and decided to dedicate it to the late mr hester.
