The death of a Napier venue

I'm new here but thought I should post this. O'Flaherety's, The only real live music venue in Napier is at present closed. Locks changed, owner out. Could see it coming however. Shame. It has such history and memories of live music seen and performed there. Nowhere really now for bands to play in Napier-both local and touring.
On a brighter note. The Tropical Downbeat Orchestra seems to be doing the business over the road at The Windsock on Thursday nights.

Forums: NZ Music,

the final nail in the coffin...

are there any bands left in napier

i can only think of jakob, tempo 38, servo, tropical and angel hammer

damn shame

Yeah there's a newish roots/rhythm/jazz/beats band called The Tropical Downbeat Orchestra. Jakob have taken them on tour recently. As for O'Fla's. It'll probably reopen as another dance bar. Just what Napier needs.

That sucks balls.

aye. very depressing. was looking forward to getting up there again soon.

what a pity... being born and breed in the art deco city i see this as a huge blow.. thing is hastings st took a huge dive once all the pubs set up shop around the wharf etc (doesnt help with a death across the road aswell).... im sure someone down in naps will bring it back on home, cheers oflahs.. stevie

Ah yes... where have all the band pubs gone.... ?
I remember back when I was a covers dude (!) playing munty rock to a couple hundred people a night at Straight Shooters .... nothing like a packed pub screaming "Highway to hell.... " hahaha
Good times. Then there was the Cri... which is another story altogether. Not nice having someone stand there pointing a decibel meter at you.

That sux - is Odins is still there though? Napier is so small they need one venue that will play jazz rock reggae etc. Goldenhorse just played at the Municipal Theatre and the Onekawa Hotel had Shihad a while back.

I will have to open a bar there - yet the Corner Bar owned by young metal heads went under over a year ago. They played wicked music but couldn't survive....no live music though I don't think.... Napier is too small

O'flatulence! that stinks! O'forgoodness sake! where are all the isolated hardcore musicains of the Hawkes bay gonna play now? O'well! outwith the old and in with the new i just hope they dont replace it with some fake night club or 20 apartment building with noise complaining tenants.

o'flahs has been replaced with "Fever, Fever". haha, oh no... apparently a tragic top 40 bar. Such a sad end to a great legend.

not all is lost. I have it on very good authority that a new jumping establishment is working itself together... infact, I have a gig booked in there already. I am not sure if they are totally ready to be taking heaps of bookings yet, i think they just want to try a few gigs and see how it goes... but its looking promising.
