you asked for it.....ugly foodcourt styles logo, eighties (but not in a good way) typeface, and it takes too long to find an event... its also got a very broad scope. Specialisation is usually an advantage in these situations because it narrows ther market you need to make aware. This has everything from garage sales to church events to films to exhibitions. Rather then be an adequate guide over 20 niche markets, wouldn't it be better to rule at a couple?
pretty impressive functionality, but not that user friendly to use.
the problem for me is that when I get to the 'Search for Events' page, it isn't possible just to browse the categories you've got listed. You should have a 'Browse' option as well. In fact, you should get hit with the categories on the homepage, Yahoo/Trademe style, with events happening today/tomorrow given some prominence somewhere.
say, for example, I wanted to look at all the available Garage Sales in Wellington? I should, in theory, just be able to go to the search (or browse) page, and drill down by location and date from there, as opposed to coming up with some random keyword, having to select an area, a date, etc...
stylistically it's pretty good. Lose the drop shadows on the top menu items. in fact, there's no reason they need to be graphics, really - you can get the same sort of mouseover effect with some stylesheet whizziness (as you've done on the left hand nav, I notice). drop shadow is so 2001 (and not in a 2001 as still being futuristic way, this is actual retro-2001).
initial thoughts, anyway. will continue to play...
although, I've now figured out that leaving all the options blank, selecting the category I'm interested in, and searching on that will get me all the hits on a category.
It might be be worthwhile making the word next to the checkbox into a link to the equivalent search. so, in my case, the word 'Garage Sale' would have this URL...
you should default dates like they do.... it only takes 2-3 clicks of the mouse button and little typing to find what you want on their site... you're should be similar.
we have had the blank page really boring as we have been trying to figure out jst what to put there and how it works. Will tak heed of your comments and hopefully come up with something really user friendly.
The site is called "Your Events" and claims to be a list of events, yet when I go there, there are no events on the front page, just a bunch of links and some advertising spiel that is of no interest to me.
Where are these events? I want to see something on the front page that makes me want to go to an event.
thanks guys and gals keep it coming. The front page, in fact the whole site is still under development so it all helping this feedback to make the site more user frindly and kick ass.
in the search results: i think you should put the date of the event just below (or next to) the name of the event, BEFORE the summary, not after. the date is pretty much the first thing i look for. also you could which day it is, like 'thurs 11.04.03' or whatever. i always find that useful. saves me getting out the calender!
as for the graphics, i would agree with the others and say theyre pretty ugly. lose the dropshadows and work on a better, cleaner, logo.
Switch it to XHTML/CSS without table structuring and it will be cooler still, but the current code seems pretty good. :-P
As to the site itself, I only had a cursory glance around it, but it seems fairly good. Just one or two things:
- With the "event-type" icons, you should make the icons themselves into links, not just the text below them. Right now the links are quite hard to click.
- Do something about those massively wide rollovers on the text links. They're too wide and they're quite distracting because the zone where they activate is only like 10 pixels high, so they sort of flicker on and off as you move your mouse around.
Perhaps if you made a square area containing the icon and text into one big link, and highlight the whole thing as a rollover? Although that might be hard to do using that table-based site structure, I dunno...
Also, I don't really like that shade of yellow that you have in the side-bar. Can't place what it is about it, but it really doesn't seem very aesthetically pleasing, to me at least. Perhaps replace it with a colour that's less pale (and less yellow)?
Anyway, other than those fairly minor things, I think it's pretty good. Certainly a damn sight better than most websites out there... it's easy to make a website, but it's really difficult to make a good one.
cheers mate, very useful feedback. Much appreciated. You couldnt be more right about making good websites. I think at the end of the day simple is best which ideally is what we are going for.

it kinda covers the same market as bethere.org.nz does... except they don't do garage sales.
