The 'how much is too much' for a live show thread got me thinking...
How much is too much for smaller/new bands? I have no problem paying $5 to watch a band play, but at the same time I hate charging $5 for my own. whats everybodys feelings on the issue?

$5 is a token. Maybe you could call it $5 Koha, and then people who feel like they really need a beer more than they need to pay for their entertainment could spare a gold coin. Though specifying how much for Koha kinda defeats the purpose- mmm but i don't have a problem with $5. i pay to get in to $5 gigs all the time, even if there's a doorlist cos its so stupid. Its like buying the band a beer.
$10 for two bands is reasonable too.

Depends man, in a town bar, $5 for three bands is cool, even if all three are new, 1 new one however $5 IS too much, 2 big bands one small or one big one small $5-10 is cool, 3 bigger ones $12-15 is alright... then after that we ar etalking big band prices/all ages/ multi group events
I think $5 is sweet, also its easy in terms of paying and change

its a donation dude. So people don't feel pressured to pay if they really can't afford it. Though i think its fuckin rank if you don't pay and then buy a beer.
Example. Charlie Ash debut gig. Entry $2 koha. The girls had done all their own publicity, brought their own (small) PA, mics, and simple lighting. There were about 100 people there? Thats 200 bucks, which about covers what they would've spent. And what a nice night. We all felt like we had donated to a good cause. And $2 for a debut gig was a bargain. Everyone has $2, theres no excuse. And it was somewhere where wine was cheap.
Koha. what a nice concept.

Yeah, I like the concept of koha. we haven't done it yet, but it sits heaps easier with me than making people spring for $5...

you say everyone has $2 so no excuse, so why make it optional?

It's a pseudo-hippy thing. You don't have to pay, man, but, you know, do it, or else you'll be no better than someone who dodged a door charge.

IMHO- $5 is 'cost price', and no band need feel guilty for asking it, and I never have a problem paying it- a show made up of 3 new bands with no hype/profile, basic lighting and PA, no frills, that's $5.00- I would probably keep it at $5 untill there was something tangible to base an increase on- e.g. if one of the bands was fairly well known, pulled a consistant crowd & getting playlisted or something. I don't think it's wise to undervalue yourselves, people will begin to expect it of others.

that seems like good advice. it is dodgy if people come to expect to get in for free. it would also be difficult when you did start charging, i could see that leading to a bit of alienation.
on a side note, I got my amp cone replaced foetusboy. my amp has a totally different sound. EVM cones are completely different to celestion - though in a good way. even with just 1 new cone the amp is so much clearer and has a more percussive response. I also drown everybody else out again, just like the old days.
close miked the difference is amazing, the celestion sounds like it has had a fairly thick rug placed between the cone and the mic when compared to the EVM. I've come to the conclusion that customising the cones in a new amp should really be as obligatory as customising the pickups on a new guitar.

RE Speakers: sweet- I am considering getting a second speaker for my own amp, since (as you know) they're relatively easy to pop in & out, and it would be great to have a fresh sound available if needs must- currently Celestion G12M, looking to get a Jensen P12R.

I price all my gigs at $5 unwaged/$10 waged, and it works suprisingly well. 90% of people pay $10, and I don't piss off the people like you who still think that more than $5 is too much to pay.
Oh and I never ask for ID, so it's an honesty system. Maybe you should try it.

Hey, I was quite clear about what I meant by 'cost price'- you're putting a spin on it that just isn't there. I said I never have a problem paying $5 to see 3 new bands who I've never heard of.
nah, you can't charge less then $5. ...
nah, you can't charge less then $5. thats just crazy. Free shows everynow and then maybe (very infrequently), but when you charge less then $5 it just sets a silly new price point. $5 is BUGGER all. I'd be too embarrassed to charge $2... whats the point?
$5 is generally too cheap anyway.. the good thing about $10 is that you can charge that at the beginning of the evening for the keen people to see all 3 or so bands, then you can drop it to $7-$8 with two bands to go and then drop to $5 with one band to go. When you start off with $5... you gotta start discounting.. like 2 for 1 and shit when people start whining that they've missed half the bands.
People who arrive early for a show..ie, 9:30/10pm and always keen to pay $10 anyway, they came out for a whole night... you then get the cheap drunk people who have already pissed away $40 on booze arriving around 11:30, so you charge them less...then you get the people who arrive at 1am who don't even know where they are, what time it is and who they are... you just charge them a fiver.
also...unless the gig is free or over ...
also...unless the gig is free or over $10, never put the price on the poster or advertise it... then you can just decide last minute... ie, if the weather is shite and there are like 30 other kick ass gigs on that night and the finals of the rugby world cup are on you charge $5... but if there is a queue down the road for your show and everybody is talking about your gig like its NMEs band of the week and the only other gig on is some tools covers band at the kings arms, then charge $10+
///then you get the people who arrive ...
///then you get the people who arrive at 1am who don't even know where they are, what time it is and who they are... you just charge them a fiver.
unscrupulous, but a nice idea;-)
