OK, so I followed you advice and contacted RIANZ. Between the info they gave me and my opinion we've created a list based on the number of weeks the album charted... what do you think? What's not there that should be? (remember NZ artists only)
So heres the list (in no significant order)
1 Fat Freddy’s – ‘Based on a True Story’
2 The Exponents – ‘Something beginning with C’
3 Goldenhorse – ‘Riverhead’
4 Hayley Westenra – ‘Pure’
5 Bic Runga – ‘Beautiful Collision’
6 Crowded House – ‘The Very Best of…’
7 Brooke Fraser – ‘What to do with Daylight’
8 Split Enz – ‘True Colours’
9 Che Fu – 'Navigator'
10 Anika Moa – 'Thinking Room'
11 Supergroove – 'Traction'
12 The Finn Brothers – 'Everyone is Here'
13 Zed – 'Silencer'
14 Yulia – 'Into the West'
15 Space Race – 'Mi-Sex'
16 Neil Finn – 'Try Whistling This'
17 Chills – 'Submarine Bells'
18 Ben Lummis – 'One Road'
19 Scribe – ‘The Crusader’
20 Goldenhorse – ‘Riverhead’
21 Shihad – ‘The General Electric’
Would you consider this a definitive NZ music album collection?
Loving feedback!
Thanks

its a pretty crap and completely limited take on nz music (as a list), totally devoid of most of the elements that define good nz music.

oh and also - you've got space race / mi-sex backwards (the group was 'mi-sex', the album 'space race')

//totally devoid of most of the ...
//totally devoid of most of the elements that define good nz music.//
And those elements would be??
My definition of good music is music ...
My definition of good music is music that I enjoy listening to. Everything else is bad music.
So ... as this is a list based on time in the charts you can probably describe the albums listed as those that were enjoyed, even if briefly, by a large number of album purchasers. Hence, by my definition, this is good music.
//Would you consider this a definitive ...
//Would you consider this a definitive NZ music album collection?//
Probably not. Artists that I consider should feature in a definitive music collection include Ray Columbus & the Invaders, Mr Lee Grant, John Hore, Gray Bartlett, Suzanne Prentice, Peter Posa, Shane, Mark Williams, Frank Gibson Junior, Alison Durbin, Shaft, the NZSO, Michael Houston, Kiri Te Kanawa, Inia te Wiata, Headband, BLERTA, Dr Tree ... I could go on and on.
But I seriously doubt that a list of 20 fairly recent albums could in anyway be construed as the definitive NZ album collection.
I think the biggest problem with this ...
I think the biggest problem with this is that it's biased too much towards new stuff. As a generalisation, the older albums definitely deserve to be there. It's probably too soon to make a call on the post-2000 stuff.
Also, good as some people might think 'Riverhead' is, it doesn't deserve to make the list twice...
Yeah...I think it's a pretty ...
Yeah...I think it's a pretty understandable list, but I don't think it's the best representation of most popular albums of all time. Most classic albums don't necessarily "chart", so much as sell consistently over a long period of time. There may be a correlation, obviously, but I think charting is far more heavily skewed by marketing budgets.
and its not just that 'enjoyed' as ...
and its not just that 'enjoyed' as related to SALES (which we must remember are guided by advertising, promotion and trends) is NOT a reflection on the value or quality. the list is totally devoid of underground artists (a lot of which define the 'nz sound' from the outside, where is the clean, the terminals, the bats, the d4, the datsuns, dead c, birchville cat motel), and its lacking a lot of the era-related material, i mean forchrisakes, dave 'sold a gazillion albums' dobbyn isn't even on the list!

...although now that I'm looking at ...
...although now that I'm looking at the list I don't know if total albums sold would really be too much different...
i doubt there is more than 100 people ...
i doubt there is more than 100 people outside NZ (who weren't living in nz in the past couple years) who even know who Ben Lummis IS...

//is NOT a reflection on the value or ...
//is NOT a reflection on the value or quality
Yeah, but if you're talking about the "best quality" albums of all time, there are going to be as many lists as there are music-lovers. And even then a lot of people's tastes are dictated by exposure. I think if you held a referendum, it wouldn't necessarily show any major differences either.
//dave 'sold a gazillion albums' ...
//dave 'sold a gazillion albums' dobbyn isn't even on the list!
Does anyone actually have any figures on this?? Some of his more recent solo efforts have sold as few as 3000 copies... which doesn't really suppor the gazillions theory...
I'm actually wondering whether there's a methodological flaw underlying this list. Perhaps it needs to be corrected for the total number of albums sold in a given year or something... I'd expect a popular vote to be skewed by recency effects, but to have this happen for cumulative sales suggests perhaps the number of albums being bought is not constant.
heather - the key word to me is ...
heather - the key word to me is 'definitive' - to me that suggests quality moreso than popularity, but if you were talking purely on a popularity side of things, the list is STILL missing peter posa, dinah lee, ray columbus and the invaders, mothergoose, max merrit, the la de da's, human instinct, the dudes, d d smash, toy love, the clean, tall dwarfs, ardijah, shona lang, the bats, dead c, king kapisi, headless chickens, head like a hole etc etc etc, and thats just scraping the surface

using nothing but album sales as the measure, would any of those realistically have a hope of breaking into that #20 list?
Nearly all the albums cat_nz has listed would have been #1, and at least gold, if not platinum (and, in a few cases, multi-platinum) status. I think only the Headless Chickens and a couple of the 60s/70s acts might have any hope of sneaking in.
yeah but again the word is DEFINITIVE - ...
yeah but again the word is DEFINITIVE - which a top 20 list is never going to be. what kind of person only owns 20 albums and considers it the definitive ANYTHING? maybe there's someone out there with the 20 definitive swedish reggae albums sung in cantonese?

that'd be jon bywater.
// yeah but again the word is DEFINITIVE
indeed. I would've left it out, myself.
cat_nz's initial request was for "...the most successful/best selling albums..." and I thought we'd veered towards the best selling albums as an easy way of avoiding the whole subjective 'what is the best?' debate, which, I'm sure we all know, is something even two people with similar tastes will never agree on, let alone the nzm massif.
to me, that top 20, if treated as a bestsellers list, looks about right.
