Hip Hop Music in Aotearoa

Gareth Shute, the consummate skinny white boy, has won a Montana Book Award for his book on kiwi hiphop. Frankly I'm not that surprised, considering he was just up against books about boring ol' food and wine, but congratulations are in order, and FWIW the book is well worth taking a nosey at.

To my knowledge, Gareth basically spent a couple of years interviewing as many hiphop artists as he possibly could (I suspect it was just an excuse to get to meet some of his favourite artists, actually), so the book tells the story of hiphop music's evolution in NZ in hiphop's own words. It's pretty choice and has lots of photos.

Forums: NZ Music,

...ha, so now that hip hop has literary cred, no doubt it'll be the new hipster thing. I bet Hip Hop Music in Aotearoa will be gracing coffee tables throughout Ponsonby and Parnell.

did you know its one of the most popular items to steal from Real Groovy?

Congrats to Gareth, nice one.

What? But hip hop fans are illiterate?

Oh, they must steal it to look at the pictures.

Awesome! Congrats G... I voted for ya :)

fantastic news. I'm sure we're gonna see much more from this man.

IMPORTANT FACTOID: Gareth borrowed my copy of MC OJ and the Rhythm Slave's "What Can We Say" CD as part of the research for this book.

i have this record,
on the cover they look like 2 beetroot heads!

also Gareth has been the only major nz hip hop researcher to really include Dark Tower in his writings.
thanks Gareth for that! Dark Tower were the first South Island hip hop act to release something. And people try to discredit Dark Tower for being white. Eli is half Tongan!
