Grand Theft Auto given AO rating

GTA is a great game but worthy of an AO rating im not sure.

http://xtramsn.co.nz/technology/0,,7003-4588911,00.html

I like this part in the story though

"US Senator Hillary Clinton, who has vowed to introduce legislation to crack down on the sale of violent and sex-laden games to minors, called on the company to go further. "

Now the game is already R18, so first of all it should be in the hands of minors, so how the fuck is making it AO going to stop that? its like raising the drinking age to 20, 16 year old will still get a hold of it...

"In a statement on Wednesday, Clinton urged Take-Two to offer parents a refund on returned games. The company, she charged, had "gamed the ratings system and enabled pornographic material to get into the hands of children."

See my above response

Mrs Clinton apparently isnt asking the ONE question that needs to be asked and that is "How the fuck are minors getting their hands on R18 games?"

If they are minors they 1) shouldn't be playing it anyways, and 2) their parents should be aware of what kinds of games their kids are playing especially if they are minors.
And I am making a big assumption here that the parents are most likely responsible for the purchase of the game to begin with.

And if the parents bought the game for their child, they would have seen the R18 sticker and know full and well what they were buying...

Its not the hackers fault for revealing this sex scenes, its not the kids fault for playing the game with the hidden sex scenes its the parents fault for buying the game for thier children

But apparently Mrs Clinton has missed that idea altogether

Rock Star games have properly shown what rating the game is and has detailed what the game involves and contains, so why the hell is this Rock Star and Take - Two's fault?

Shouldn't the parents be taking better care and interest in what games their children are playing? Shouldn't the people who are selling the games be taking a bit more care in who they are selling it to?

I do NOT see who this is the game makers fault nor do I see how making a video game AO is going to change anything.

thats just me though

Forums: The Bar,

The whole thing is stupid.

As Che Tibby pointed out on his blog today, here's a game where you can kill anyone, buy and sell drugs, steal stuff (etc. etc.), but as soon as they show a couple of people having sex (the only legal activity in that list), people start freaking out and wanting to ban it. Priorities, people.

// Rock Star games have properly shown what rating the game is

// hell is this Rock Star and Take - Two's fault?

They omitted to tell the rating authorities about the sex scene. They were naughty.

yeah, so I guess they were asking for trouble but yeah isnt it dumb, hahaahah the one thing thats legal they get in trouble for

Funny that she cracks down on that game, but "Battlefield Vietnam" and "Iraq Conflict" or whatever are perfectly ok. Why aren't they AO rated?

If the soldiers started having sex they probably would

Ha ha ha!
Use M-16? Grenade ? RPG?
Poon-tang in Saigon duringservice leave?
Blow your commanding officer? Sexual favours to the Viet Cong?
Now there's a game covering all the bases.

Its double standards that they can ban a drug-related game but still keep (with tight restrictions) a game riddled with sex scenes, They should either bring back that dope game (making it R18 like GTA) or ban GTA - Banning one over the other is double stds and i fucking hate double stds.

what are you on about luci?

//what are you on about luci?

Does your left hand no longer know what the right one is up to anymore, Noizy?

did it ever?

Maybe you should draw eyes on your hands so that they can keep an eye on each other.

my point: double standards = ignorance.

I think you misunderstand... in New Zealand it's R18, sure, but in the States it was just M-rated, and I'm pretty sure there weren't any restrictions on who could buy it. Now there are. As far as I'm concerned that's fair enough- I know a bunch of minors who play the GTA games, but that's because their parents know what's in them, and have decided that they're ok with them playing them. Having a restriction means that parents have to buy it for their kids, and that means they'll probably want to know what's in it first, so basically what you're doing is putting the choice in the hands of the parents not the kids. Fair enough, no?

fair enough, as long as mrs clinton blames the parents next time if something happens involving the game and NOT the game makers.

yeh, with just an M rating in the states pretty much anyone could pick it up, I think M is recommended 15+.

Whats more significant over there though is that most stores don't stock AO titles, which is why Rockstar would have gone to extra effort to keep their M rating - eg, removing the content which the "hot coffee" mod unlocks.

Im sure enough retailers would recognise the sales potential that a title like GTA:SA has and stock it despite its rating, but its gonna be disasterous for their sales if the only place in Hicksville Alabama that stocks AO rated video games is the local smut shop.

Does this even though its M, doesnt this come to do the parents being un aware of what their kids are playing though?

Shouldnt the be paying more attention to what their kids are playing ? or atleast questioning their kid on what the game involves?

the stupid asshole hackers that unlocked this special mod, would be old enough to buy it himself but then ruins it for the younger kids,

an 'M' rating restricts sales to people 17+.
'AO' is 20+, so the changing of the rating now bans all those 17,18 and 19 year olds. Obviously all those 17 year old guys who download the mod instructions, install them, and then spend hours getting to the point where they can watch some pixellated porno action won't have any ideas on how to find exactly the same sort of real-life hardcore action on the web.

// the stupid asshole hackers that unlocked this special mod,
// would be old enough to buy it himself but then ruins it for the younger kids,

eh? surely it's Rockstar Games who are 'ruining it for the kids' by putting the porn content in there in the first place?

//eh? surely it's Rockstar Games who are 'ruining it for the kids' by putting the porn content in there in the first place?

No, it's the parents who teach kids how to download things in the first place! (Ahem).

ban the Internet!

some bits of it are AO!

//eh? surely it's Rockstar Games who are 'ruining it for the kids' by putting the porn content in there in the first place?

Forgive my dumbness but...

Is this thing a "key" that unlocks an aspect of the game, or is it a "mod" that inserts a new bit into the game?
Cos if it is a "key" then surely the "hacker" had to be a part of Rockstar games to know that the naughty bit was there in the first place, and so therfore it is Rockstars fault.
If it's just some naughty kid modifying the game to put naughty bits in then how can you stop it?

// Is this thing a "key" that unlocks an aspect of the game

yes. the AO scenes were part of the game as shipped from Rockstar Games. Upon being discovered and publicised, the makers tried to claim that it was a hacker's mod, and outside their control. It didn't take long before people discovered the exact same scenes could be found in the xbox and PS2 versions, and that Rockstar Games were, essentially, fibbing.

. . . but the real question is how do I unlock it on my PS2 version ?

(you know, for . . . um . . . research)

^^ hahah apparently its only on the Xbox version of the game...not that I have like tried to do this on my PS2 or anything either...coz I havent I swear

but according to noizyboy's article I have been lied to

// ehh cheers, looks like too much hard work,

heh. exactly.

//I'll just send old Carl off to a titty bar and get him a lap dance :)

. . . and then after that I'll make him chop off random peoples heads with the samuri sword, bash some old ladies to death, fire bomb passing cars with a molotov and do a few drive bys . . . . just as long as I don't make him make sweet love to his girlfriend . . . .

sounds like a day in the life of a LugHead Hill Street Homie :)

Grand Theft Auto 4 - Lughead Hill

unfortunatly there's no rating high enough for that dantheman
