NZ Idol- someone had to

No one else has started a thread yet... I dont think, so I thought I would

As always the first few episodes will provide a great amount of laughter and entertainment for those watching at home, and Im sure the next couple will be just as funny.

The Auditions-
It is just sooooo funny watching these people who believe whole heartedly that they can sing when they are either completely tone deaf or sing in the car with the radio up so loud they cant hear themselves sing.

But I often found myself feeling embaressed for them, it was like a bad stand up comedian, who is laughing at his jokes because no one else is,and you just cringe in your seat feeling sorry for them.

Yet you cant look away, like the car crash you know you shouldnt be looking at but need to have a peak as you drive by,

Im sure those who saw the first episode will remember the 2 girls the one who wanted Dom's presenting job, who had piled on the mascara, the dirty whatever the hell colour hair that was, with the crop top and should never have been cropped OR should never have been worn on a stomach like that, whos singing voice, sounded like... well im not sure what it sounded like

Then we have "Voo doo doll girl" whos opinion of every judge (except pauls) went from one extreme to the other simply because they told her the truth " You cant sing"

Sure good on them for having a go,and giving it a shot, I wish I had the balls ( or the supidity) to go on national television and get totally destroyed by the judges because i cant sing worth a pinch of shit.

But how could ANYONE with voices like theirs think that they can sing? I may not be a singer, I may not have a very good voice but I atleast can carry a tune, these people couldnt,

Question 1
Who tells these people they can sing?

Question 2
Is it the over supportive parents that make these people believe they can sing?

Question 3
Are these people just taking the piss?
there must be some people who know they cant sing but go on anyway just as a joke.

hopefully someone can provide some answers

Forums: NZ Music,

Last idol I read somewhere that it was really difficult making good tv of the auditions because most of the rejected parties were pretty philosophical, going for the "well, that's just their opinion" angle. I reckon probably the rejectees were encouraged to ham it up for the camera this time around. Perhaps Malibu Girl can confirm/deny?

Shoosh, don't encourage her.

Hey, don't diss the malibu girl, she's my new hero. She reminds me of mini-me, except with bad fashion sense. And that's not difficult to fix.

No, Joanna is right. Do not encourage her.

If you want to see what happens when she is encouraged, please scoot over to Idolblog.com and see her long rants on the forums there about how she's always wanted to be an actress and/or a politician (assumingly because both vocations require a certain about of media whoredom).

I particularly love her self-googling exploits so that she can enjoy every last moment of attention. It's really quite funny how many places she's found her way to (including here obviously). Shall we start taking bets on how far she's going to have to run to escape her legacy in a couple of years. Eastern bloc country?

man, the gpforums are a classic example of why I don't like those plug'n'play php forums.

Man, that topic makes me realise the 48may topic is full of love-hearts and flowers and bunnies.

So really, she-who-will-not-be-named has done everyone lots of favours in making us appreciate what we've got.

Awww, it's like A Christmas Carol, and she's the ghost of the future unless we elect Luci as pres.

// man, the gpforums are a classic example of why I don't like those plug'n'play php forums.

heheh. yeah.

That chick has something seriously wrong with her. Doesn't comprehend an element of hypocrisy between conservative values and posing for a t & a mag (and not telling her olds, although how they've managed not to find out is beyond me).

She's all over the varsity.co.nz forums too, but at least she's more entertaining than the vast community of Destiny members inhabiting the site.

I heard that the people who are only average don't get to sing in front of the judges. They only let through the people who are really good or really bad.

Well who the hell wants to watch average tv?

Exactly.

You missed the other two criteria: hot or psycho/delusional/histrionic. Although they usually prefer those with either good or bad singing ability.

I loved the ones who burst out of the audition, faces screwed up with tears, saying, "Get that camera out of my face."

HAHAHAHAHA.

When is it actually on. I have only seen 'coming soon' advertising. I am soooooo gutted i've missed the best of it! But no doubt, they will play little snippets of the best of the worst...

Sundays at 7:30 on channel 2,

Best quote so far-

Paul Ellis "There is money in that voice (guys face lights up with excitement) I think you should take that voice, record it to tape and put it inside a house, because it will scare every rodent away from the house (guys face melts into a pool of misery, you can actaully see his heart snap in two)"

Yeah, that was pretty cruel. That singer was just barely the wrong side of a fine line between really amazingly good and really amazingly shit. I reckon given some practice he could cross that line.

yeah It was definately a unique voice, but in the great words of Steve Stifler " i think he needs his balls re attached"

http://xtramsn.co.nz/entertainment/0,,13040-4535752,00.html

theres the link to all of pauls most memorble insults? or comments? so far

That insult sounded rehearsed. I wonder if that preformer got it at random rather than because Ellis belieced he truly had a rodent-killing voice.

i watched it and there was a dude with his mother who looked like nato (the dude, not his mother).

is this what nato is doing these days?

hahahaa

(hi Nato :)

nz idol - another series featuring pathetic attention-whoring young people to get thee 15 mins of fame, real musos out there are struggling to make a $ yet alone get a gig thanks to this international franchise which should be banned for encouraging attention-whoring, how pathetic.

After seeing The Slapper Who Shall Not Be Named, I'm very close to agreeing with you.

People with any real talent wouldnt lower themselves to go on NZ Idol (or atleast i should hope not).

//People with any real talent wouldnt lower themselves to go on NZ Idol (or atleast i should hope not).

But what about Frankie? His career has been almost as illustrious as his brother's!

A slight rehash of something many of you will have seen before, but I only hope the finale of this year's NZ Idol is as captivating as the final of last year's Dutch Idol.

Simply the Best.

Ahahahaha! I love it! Round up all the worst singers in the country and stick them in a stadium full of football(?) fans and strange hippy-deathmetaller hybrids. So evil...

hey its liz here, i know i can't sing. I did this for a laugh, or just tune into ZM tonight for an itnerview with me.

Liz. You say you did this all for a laugh, and that you can't sing.
So why last semester in popmusic did you get excited and speak up in class about how you been in the recording studio, and that it's sooo wieeeerrd to hear your own voice played back?

hahahahaha busted you wannabe. It's easy to say "I just did it for a laugh" after you fall flat on your face isn't it?

you seem to do it well enough

Care to quantify?

qualify?

//Care to quantify?

"I'm Sam Browne. Dunedin Music School is so great blah blah blah "

......

"Put it this way - I don't think going to university and doing a BMus has made me a better musician. I think I would be making the exact same music as I am now had I not gone to university."

Ahaha. Yes, the ad. That's a fair point. Ok. Well, I didn't do that for a joke, I did it for the cash. I had been at university for about three months when that was shot. My lines were, as is usually the case in an advertisement, written by somebody else for me to recite. But i probably agreed with most of the statements I made on the ad, at the time. Certainly I thought uni was really super-fun.
After that I did the full degree and in hindsight it wasn't all it was cracked up to be. For the record, I also wrote a letter expressing the sentiments I posted here recently to the HOD of music, after my first year. And no, nothing much changed. It got to the point where I figured although it wasn't a great degree, I'd put in enough time and money for it to be worth my while to begrudgingly finish it and get a music degree.

Also - qualify, not quanitfy. I KNEW I should have checked that one....

I said it WOULD be weird to hear my voice in a studio.

No this whole idol thing was just a way to get my name out there, and all in all it has been very successful. It is not just about fame.

If you read idolblog you will see just how much publicity I am receiving and how I am probably going to host the show for half an hour on Thursday night.

That is very pleasing.

I am also going to be NZ Idol corrospondent for Radio Live and More FM Waiarapa.

There has been a lot of negative publicity and I had the "pleasure" of hearing some of it on ZM this afternoon, which was very disappoining because I've been very loyal to ZM for several years. I used to hate More FM but they have come through as being the nicest of all the guys at radio in New Zealand.

You know, when i auditioned I knew I wouldn't get through but I was offended at the comment Paul made about my presenting when he hadn't even see me. Fortunately I have a chance to prove myself on Thursday night and I have already started preparing for it by buying a magazine with celebrity gossip and thinking of things to say. It isn't very long but it is a chance to prove to the nation that I am not in the slightest bit deluded etc.

Anyway I am exhausted from the fact I've had nothing to eat today and the media and idolblog involvement and attention.

All in all, Idol has helped me get a name for myself, even if some think I'm evil.

The thing is that this whole thing was honestly unexpected, I wasn't expecting this much publicity and I am very thankful as I said in the More FM interview.

Who are you?

// Anyway I am exhausted from the fact I've had nothing to eat
// today and the media and idolblog involvement and attention.

ahahhahhaha! tragic.

The power of one to self delude is pretty amazing. It was all a joke, hence the hissy fit?The elvis guy last year was a pisstake, he was laughing along with the judges. Liz you were all too serious for that.
Damn Andy Warhol for putting the idea into idiot heads like yours that everyone deserves 15 minutes of fame.

For those who are in a hurry, I will translate the above comment into plain English:

LOOK AT ME!!!! I'M SPECIAL AND SMART AND UNIQUE AND SEXY AND ORIGINAL!!! LOOK AT ME!!! PLEASE?

Oi, Robyn, I take strong exception to that, and as a long time fan of Geri's - at least until 2001, I ruckon if you don't apologise, you might be in for the bash.

I have to agree with Robyn - I saw the young Miss on Sunday night. I don't even know the girl, but really - the child has no dignity and even less presence, and Paul spotted it straight away.It really was the most blatant "look at me" behaviour. Mind you, it got people talking about her, which is, I suspect, the entire game plan. Pity that vapidity holds people's attention for so little time, really.

The kid + supermarket + tantrum effect.

//The kid + supermarket + tantrum effect.

I read 'tantrum' as 'tim tam'. Now I want some tim tams. Hopefully I won't have to take off my clothes to get them.

I gave Geri as an example of What To Do. She's someone who's had little raw talent, but a shitload of ambition and has tranformed it into a decent pop career through hard work and bloody-mindedness.

Miss Malibu would be wise to use her as a role model. See also: Russell Crowe, Courtney Love.

//little raw talent
//Russell Crowe

I'm sick of the Russ bashing. He's a good actor.

yeah jimi, i reckon russ's fine, new zealander's'll just bash anything slightly different from them, usual suspects involved they sure showed her.
