Why run a poll on this? The b-net (okay, bFM) "best album" category is flawed, when you consider that there is an entirely different section for best independent album. To my mind, this says that "best" is really about biggest, ie. you can only have a best album if you are part of the major label crew (you know, the ones who buy all the best seats at the awards). My major problem with the awards is that by not offering the opportunity for voters to cast a choice for an act outside of the range of the (narrowly selected) nominees, the whole concept is as narrowly focused as any mainstream crap.

I would have to disagree with you Cubey. Perhaps it is the award teminology that is flawed but I would say that the general premise is actually about lifting independents albums up... acknowledging that they don't have the marketing budget to compete with Sony and other label releases in an award determined by public votes. "Best independant album" and "Best label assised album" perhaps? As to why we are running a poll on it - we will be running a poll on all the b-net categories until the awards in September, best album just happens to be the first. We are doing this because we thought it would be nice for people to get an idea as to how the voting could be going and it will be fun to compare the results.
