shit...Perth?
Do you know how fucken expensive it is too fly to Perth? shit, you're looking at at least $800 return per person. I think it is a damn sight more practical to go to melbourne or sydney first at only around $450 return per person. And when you get to Perth you're not within driving distance of any other city... you're stuck. At least if you go to melboune or sydney you're just day trips from adelaide and brisbane.
We took an interest because we were ...
We took an interest because we were thinking about going for a holiday and staying there a month anyway. Perth's isolation was also its drawing point.. err.. for us anyway. I doubt anybody else would be so foolhardy.
Home of the Triffids (RIP) though Blink ...
Home of the Triffids (RIP) though Blink so there must be something in the water there.
Oh, that's right, they don't have water there. Place'll be a desert in a decade.
I could combine surfing with music so it could be a goer. But, you are right - independently wealthy only please apply here...
Thats kinda the point. Perth gets ...
Thats kinda the point. Perth gets overlooked, $800 return? There are get better deals than that especially if there is a group booking. It used to be $350 each way Chch to Auck, that did'nt stop anyone. I think you will find you can get flights for $400 return now to Perth with Air NZ. (I just checked) It's not that much more expensive than flying directly to Melbourne etc. And that does'nt stop people stopping off at those places along the way. As for being "stuck" in one city, not exactly true either, there are plenty of other venues outside of the metro area, Bunbury, Margaret River (If you surf you should know this area) etc etc. For those that have posted an interest, I will be in touch shortly. :)
// Thats kinda the point. Perth gets ...
// Thats kinda the point. Perth gets overlooked
cher bro. Look, I'm the first person to try and make it that towns don't get overlooked on tours. shit, it will be my epitaph. But seriously, for a band from NZ's first visit to OZ, it doens't make any practical sense to visit Perth.
//I think you will find you can get flights for $400 return now to Perth with Air NZ. (I just checked)
nope. You're reading it wrong. Their SPECIAL (ie, tough to get, may get shitty flights) is $359+$60taxes EACH way. This is approx $840 return.
//It's not that much more expensive than flying directly to Melbourne etc.
ummm....Melbourne/Sydney are around $119+$60 taxes. so $360 return. A saving of $480 per person... so a saving of around $2000 per band. ( a fuck load of money for a independent band)
// As for being "stuck" in one city, not exactly true either, there are plenty of other venues outside of the metro area, Bunbury, Margaret River
Yeah. But getting serious here. Is it better for a kiwi band to fly to OZ and spend 4 days playing Perth, Bunbury, Margaret river and Wazza wazza... or to save $2000 and spend four days playing Sydney, Melbourne, Brisbane and Adelaide.
I fully commend you trying to get NZ acts to come over and play in Perth... if you can guarantee that kiwi bands will cover their airfares, then thats fantastic, but trying to cover $3500 of airfares (not including ANY actual gig costs like promo, sound engineer, pa, backline) is a big ask... I don't know if you've fully thought this through. Sorry to be a bitch... but I'd hate to see some kiwi bands lose a fuck load of money.
// especially if there is a group ...
// especially if there is a group booking.
haha. this ain't no 20 person bus tour of the sunshine state. I doubt AirNZ or Qantas are going to get all excited and change their fares because a band of four people will all travel at once. I wish half a dozen people represented a "group" booking for an airline, but unfortunately booking international tours ain't that sweet.
Hey yeah sorry I did read that wrong, ...
Hey yeah sorry I did read that wrong, but from here (and I assume the same of similar is true from NZ) you can get flights from around $550 return.....
I hear what you are saying and I agree, I don't want anyone to lose money, and it goes without saying that airfares are the most expensive. But what I am saying is, it's worth exploring.....
I fully agree with most of it and realise it won't be easy.......but if no-one tries then no-one knows.

and as i had said in each of my posts... I totally support this plan. I think it is fantastic to give it a go, but I have done plenty o research on this Perth issue myself and it is bordering on impossible for a kiwi unknown (and i don't think much is impossible)
I've done an ass load of research as I'll be publishing a guide in a few months on touring NZ, aiming for it to be out in Oct/Nov. There will also be a very (very) basic guide in it on how to make that first trip to OZ with a few pointers. This will be free and made avail to any band in NZ or bands overseas looking to tour here.
Perth is an anomally that most Australian bands don't even play in. You thought it was tough for bands from AKl to play in Dunedin? Well, to Perth, Its a 28 hour drive from the nearest decent sized city (adelaide) or almost 40 hours from Melbourne. Its further from Sydney to Perth then it is from Akl to Sydney Its also cheaper to fly from AKL/CHCH to melbourne/Sydney then it is to fly from Melbourne/Sydney to Perth.

bro don't think I'm in any way having a crack at your achievements or opinion as such. Just that I'm sure somewhere there is a point where being sceptical towards a project becomes trying to speak for all NZ bands and their circumstances. For instance what if one or more members works for Air NZ. Mmmm cheapness. Look, I agree with you about the relative worth of playing East coast but fuck it, rock n roll. haha
//There are some dumb fucks in kiwi bands bro. Don't think differently for a second
I know, I used to be too. That is, I used to be a guy lacking common sense in a band, rather than a guy lacking common sense with no band :)

it will also be free to joe (l) public as well from venues, but I'll (hopefully, if all goes well) be sending copies for free (in NZ) to any bands that register for it.

yeah, and i hope i am not coming across as this cunt you speak of, just being my normal doomsayer in a positive happy forum.
(bring out the violins)
I am in fact simply arguing with myself, that is why i have been so harsh in this forum. I have been trying to eek out the possibility of playing shows in Perth... I failed... so i guess I'm trying to cut down this fullah cause he'll make me look bad if he can make this plan a possibilty. Lazer will be my hero if he can pull this off.

There is already a free book available from Creative NZ called "the touring manual: a guide to performing the performing arts in New Zealand". It is a very laviciouly bound volume that weighs in at 221 pages. It does tend to focus a bit on the more large scale things, like touring a play or a band the size of Fur Patrol, but it is still packed with usefull stuff.
There is also "places to play" available free from the NZMIC that is a not quite comprehensive directory of venues (as it was up to the venues to supply the information, some didn't)

blink that's rad! And I didn't think you were that bad, I was just looking for someplace to stir.
How far along the road are you with this project? Because if you wanted to possibly reduce your workload and possibly increase the informational quality through sheer numbers (not that I doubt your inter-city knowledge), why not do it in a contribution format - a wiki perhaps? That would be rad.
// why not do it in a contribution ...

thats kind of what it is... the whole point of it, actually. Its called "Local Knowledge" and it proclaims that the best way to put on a show in a town that isn't your home town is to grill the locals. I'm travelling the whole country (with no band in tow) in August and will be refining my research and also actually grilling as many great people that i've met along the way. I'll be in dunners...umm..Aug 12th i think.

Yeah, when you started detailing this I immediately thought of that topic. Cool concept yo.
I'm keen for, you know, whatever.
yeah..but seriously. do those two ...
yeah..but seriously. do those two guides have practical information for an independent band to tour the country? I've read both cover to cover (and that was quite an effort with the creativenz one) trust me, when i say that what i am working on will kick total ass.
The NZMIC guide is handy when booking venues, but it is simply that.. a venue directory.
The book I am working on covers everything you actually need to know when you tour... where is the best/cheapest accomodation, The cheapest places to eat close to venues, the best sound engineers, where to drop off fliers, the car rental places that do hell deals, the low down on venues... not how many watts their PA is, but who goes to the venue and what is it is like to put on a show there, what time are soundchecks normally... what time do people usually arrive for shows, what time start, what time to finish, how many bands to book, the kind of music you play vs the venue and its location... what to budget for, who pays guarantees, who doesn't... tricks and tips to making extra money and getting around cheaper, how to find venues, where to park, what is the best way to advertise in each city, how to get people along to your show, who are the support bands and what genre are they.. who will review your show, cheap PA hire, how to tour and break even/make money.. etc..etc...
This is all done on a city by city basis. The first edition focusing on 8-10 citys... if people dig the guide, then i might do future editions with more citys.

Hi Lazer,
I'd be interested to see how this is going to work, fire through some details including full promotional plan, thanks alex@studiolive.co.nz
[ http://www.studiolive.co.nz ]
Ok, as far as Perth goes, there are ...
Ok, as far as Perth goes, there are some dickhead promoters out there, case in point, Fur Patrol, a few months back. I never actually went but a close friend who went to review the gig (www.rockus.com.au) told me they had them play at the Lookout which would be one of the largest venues in Perth, they got 40-50 punters! In that venue, 30 people look like 1 person....the other thing was the support band, Fighting for Alaska, a pop band. Blink, some of what you are saying is valid and you make some good points, but those things have been said for years, and that is what I want to overcome, we are not in Europe and bands can't tour 5 countries in 5 days, we have to make the most of we can do. And yes, i see the airfares as being the biggest hurdle, but like I said a few years ago, it cost the same to fly to Auckland from Christchurch as it did to Sydney, that never stopped anyone from going to Auckland for gigs, and if bands from the East can tour here, why is it so hard for the Kiwis to come, for maybe $100 extra?
cool. I'm glad my bitching hasn't ...
cool. I'm glad my bitching hasn't dampned your enthusiasm. hell... doubters suck. I'm glad that you are keen to bring music to a city which doesn't get as much as it should, I have exactly the same belief. If you can come up with a scheme where kiwi bands can get to perth and not lose money, I'm sure there will be fuckloads of bands leaping at the opportunity.
but please... don't under estimate the cost. it is not $100 extra to go to Perth as opposed to the east coast. It is $400 extra per person. Wether this be via virgin, qantas or airnz (these are the three main carriers to Perth) most other airlines don't do NZ to Perth.
You do have one really good op to pull this off though. Later in the year Jetstar will be announcing their trans-Tasman flights. I'm not sure what their flights are yet, but if they offer a direct to Perth then they will undoubtably start their promo by issusing a bunch of cheap seats straight off. This is your best shot.
Blink, if you have been trying to find ...
Blink, if you have been trying to find a way to do get bands to play in Perth, why not work together here? The other side of the coin is that Perth bands will travel to NZ too, they see it as just a short hop skip and jump from Melbourne or Sydney, so some are very keen and will need assistance once in NZ.

If any one gets beyond just talking about this, i can organise good shows in melbourne, sydney and canberra . so maybe that would make perth slightly more viable? once you are in oz, flying interstate is cheap as chips.
