what sort of song title is "Butter Boys" for a band of 17 year olds. Man, thats just going to get MJ in trouble again.
as for the funding announcements. fairly predictable. not worth getting knickers in a twist about.

Holy heck - missed that one at first! Indeed, a mystery.
Why? Because their first album was ...
Why? Because their first album was hugely popular, so that gives them bonus points.
But back then Rubicon were young and cute and there was the whole "Marshall from Shortland street!!!!!!!" thing buoying them along.
But now there are younger, cuter bands doing the pop/punk thing (48 May... sigh...), so if Rubicon try and release, say, Bruce Pt 2, it won't work, and if they try and get too grown up, the grown-ups will laugh at them and that won't work either.
So it will be interesting to see what this Mutha Mutha turns out to be.

bands i'd love to see get video grants:
the futurians!
steffan van soest hit-machine
reduction agents
the new originals
house of dolls
campbell kneale / BCM (for laughs, though an edited 'chi vampires' would make a cool single)
undercurrents
the terminals / renderers / maryrose crook
my dad bill
goldenaxe

I'd say except for the reduction agents and my dad bill, I would be very surprised if ANY of those artists got videos man..haha. shit. They rule, and its a great list, but really...The Futurians? I doubt they even bother putting in. I can just see NZOA listening to one of their recorded off VHS songs now.haha. Goldenaxe made one of the best videos last year, and they didn't need any funding for it.

nah... i just reckon it means they'd be able to buy some flash pants and a enough masking tape to get them around the south island again. Of course I'd love t see them get funding, but for that to happen, they'd have to be able to be playlisted on a commercial NZ radio station...and what are the chances of that?
Goldenaxe have released three albums in just over a year and a fucken good video without the help of funding. respect.
I don't think people make videos ANY better just cause they get funding. 24 of the 25 vids on low hum dvd were unfunded. I reckon they kick the ass of 90% of NZ funded videos. You don't need money, just talent. The trick is getting the video played.
hah!...
hah!
I just had a great idea - it's not ...
I just had a great idea -
it's not free to send in an application for a grant.
even if you record the music for free (quite unlikely) there's the cost of the blank cds
and then the postage and packaging. some people put in a number of songs/artist per round.
and in the end most of the time it's a freakin waste of money.
add it up - roughly costs $6-$10 to send an application in.
they get about 140 (max) per round, so that's about 200(ish) when there is
a new recordings round too.
of them about 30 get funding: so that leaves maybe 150 who miss out.?
do the sums: makes about $1200.
so instead of sending in your applications knowing you won't get a grant.
why don't you all put $6 or $8 every two months into my bank account.
I'll save it up and every 6 months I (with a panel of experts) will choose a band
to give $3600 to make a video!

i'm sure if the christchurch/dunedin artists were playing around nz, they'd be just as likely to get a grant as some of the auckland or wellington artists.
auckland is the largest city in nz.... more people go to the gigs.... more people hear about you.... you have more profile etc
it makes sense if more auckland bands get the grants over the timaru bands who play covers at the local pub every friday night after the rugby
It shouldn't make any difference where ...
It shouldn't make any difference where a band is from. NZonAir are simply handing out money to the most commercial songs they receive (as they have said they would) - if it happens that most of that is from Auckland then all well and good.
Of course do we really believe that they base their decisions soley on the songs?

Yeah but hard work doesn't make up for a complete lack of talent........if funding is aimed at commercial success then what the frick are they doing getting funding? What commercial radio station plays shit like that except Kiwi?
And correct me if i'm wrong but Chong Nee who's Dei Hamo's bumboy got a new recording artist grant AND a video grant for 2 different songs when im pretty sure it states that you can't.
Bollocks!
are you sure? I think its just that you ...
are you sure? I think its just that you are not meant to put the same song in for a video AND new recording..because theoretically videos are only given to quality recordings..ie, no need for a new recording. i've never heard of a rule where you can't get funding in the same round for two seperate songs.

it is ver unfair, but no - it states that you can't get a video and new recording grants for the same song.
you dont think they would do a boo boo like that with so much scrutiny going on about what they are doing.
oh yeah - i must remember that.... no ...
oh yeah - i must remember that.... no disrespect intended but chong nee has his own studio.
i thought new recordings grant were to pay a recording studio - so is he paying himself.
I must remember this - i could be in for a quick 5g's one day!
// if funding is aimed at commercial ...
// if funding is aimed at commercial success then what the frick are they doing getting funding?
hmmm if you went to any of their all ages shows and heard the songs, you'd hear they're as commercial and have potential to be huge. The songs are as catchy as any artist played on zm or the edge... only with an edgy approach
I agree that their riffs and rhythms ...
I agree that their riffs and rhythms resemble the catchiness of pop-punk........but doesn't catchiness GENERALLY also need vocal melody, especially for commercial radio. The Rabble vocalist/s can't sing melodies.
There's definitly melody in there. I ...
There's definitly melody in there. I could notate the vocals and it could be played on any instrument. I love the rabble but can't do the whole shouting thing that Chazz and Rupe do, so I sing or hum the tunes. So long as there's some sort of catchiness in there... it's likable... whether it's sang, screamed or yelled.
The rabble are probably one of the more extreme bands to get funding, like the bleeders... But I think that's what kids want. They want to hear something extreme, they want to see a band who look extreme... and when they find they're nice guys too then they can relate to that. They want to know you can dress however you want and still be whoever you want. Just because you listen to angry punk, doesn't mean you're an angry person who sleeps in the gutter, and doesn't shower.
I see your point but if The Rabble were ...
I see your point but if The Rabble were going to be successful with the backing of these friendly punk kids they would have already done something.
From what i can gather they have been around for a relatively long time and have played a shitload of gigs and seem to have a large teen following........YET they have accomplished little as far as commercial success goes.......doesn't this bode badly for their future?
Yeah they've been around for a few ...
Yeah they've been around for a few years, yet they're still only 17, 18, 19 - I don't think because they've been around and playing gigs for so many years works to their disadvantage. When listening to the songs from when they first started, their songs were all fast, all yelling and that's cool if you're in to that.... but as they've matured, the variety in their songs have matured as well. Also, the original line up of the band has changed since they first started.... as new members joined the band, new influences were brought in to the song writing. "Carry On", the song which got the funding is one of their slower love songs and features a mandolin. They would never have done anything like that 2 years a go....
Yes, the band have been around for years... but only now, they are starting to be noticed by a wider audience. Because the scene they were playing in 2 years a go is different to the shows they're doing now... and because the band is still a young band, they're still considered to be a fresh new band.
From what I've seen it's common for ...
From what I've seen it's common for good bands to be around for anywhere between two and five (or more) years before they start developing a widespread following.
Mind you, around these parts you'd be roasted by fans and haters alike for suggesting that the Rabble are - or need to be - "commercial enough" to get widespread popularity.
And as for being one of the most extreme bands to get funding, I wouldn't say that at all, and it sort of contradicts your point about them being commercially viable. I think the Rabble are pretty conventional. That said, the one time I saw them I thought they were pretty cool & good on them for getting a grant.

Quite right there that Blink fellow....
You cant 'double-dip' with songs, and the tracks that you apply for video funding with have to be the finished versions, not demonstrations.

so i approached him with a deal. and then i approached nz on air who gave me $500 000 to make an album for him. i used all that money up on drugs, wine, and cheese. and so donald was left out in the cold.

well, you must be pretty close to the whole situation, cause only a few people would know that since technically the funding was for "down on me". So whats your beef? Sam or Ed not asking you to lend a hand? If you got a personal beef with zamm, quit trying to disguise it with hasseling them for recieving four grants when there is an ASS load of bands out there who have recieved four or more grants.

Not hassling em, just making a point of them coming up in the funding round again - yes your right a lot of other bands have received more (spelt received not recieved) and yes as i am "close" to the situation i take note that they received another grant and good fucken on em

fair 'nough. I just don't know ...
fair 'nough.
I just don't know many more bands in the pop industry who have worked as hard or as long as mikey in zamm. I perfer to see them get funding over other "commercial" acts, knowing how much more he works his ass off then alot of the bands who get funding,
bands that piss me off are the ones who get funding but you never ever seem to hear from them or see the finished result. NZOA know that zamm are a safe bet, cause mikey is reliable and they know that if they give them money it will get spent in right place.
Ps..the ed/samflux jibe was just me trying to work out who you were.
