Self Indulgent Guitar Playing

Hey, anyone out there still love guitar solo's and instrumental guitar music. We all know that guitar playing was pushed to it's absolute peak
technically in the 80's shred era, but hey, it's gone way to far in the other direction now with either no solos, or bloody average ones. A good solo can make a song, it's the iceing on the cake. Imagine the Eagles "Hotel California" without that great solo or Pink Floyd's "Comfortably Numb", or Zep's "Stairway To Heaven". How do other Guitar player's out there feel about this? Anyway, for those of you who appreciate stuff like Joe Satriani and Steve Vai etc.. i invite you to listen to my brand new Guitar soaked instrumental, Click on the "Music Teachers" page on the following link and select the "Walk With Me"free download. I would really appreciate your feedback, cheers all!

*Awkward silence*

*noises of gatman flicking back ponytail as he solemnly shreds at the edge of a cliff at sunset"

Everything about that comment is so funny, I almost wet myself. Oh God. Ponytails. Solemn shredding. At sunset. Oh stop that's too much funny.

*dirty old man laugh* hehehe... "wet" yourself

I actually remember an ad, years ago, in a guitar world magazine or something similar. It was for some reverb unit or something, and to demonstrate the incredibly vast sound of the reverb, it had a ponytailed dude standing at the edge of a cliff, shredding hard out. Just thought you might want to know, Disasteradio.

the best ad i ever saw in a guitar mag was that one for the 'perfect pitch' training casettes - with the guy in tight jeans and sneakers grinning widely and holding a walkman

"...perfect pitch AND relief from constipation..."

Perfect pitch is a legend in itself... that guy was so tame, yet "wild!". And his guitar wasnt even plugged into anything. Hes so hardcore. Also, doesnt everyone love ponytails, shredding and cliffs? The only shredding on cliffs i think i like was slash in the guns n roses don't cry video. cos the song is great.

Well this guy's pretty pleased he decided to do David Lucas Burge's perfect pitch course.

LMAO

I'm going to break the silence and ask something that has confused me for many years.

In the November Rain video when Slash goes outside and plays outside the church, the wind blowing his hair into his face... he has a cigarette in his mouth .

Why doesn't his hair catch on fire?

Flame retardent perming chemicals... and his sunglasses were to protect his eyes from the embers.

Oh, and gatman... yeah, there is still a lot of instrumental guitar music happening... Jakob, Clot, Spiderplain, Dukes Of Lesiure... just not much shredding... although I think maybe Clot would edge closest to what you're imagining. I think they're playing Indigo on a Tuesday sometime soon.

why doesn't his hair catch fire?

Because it's raining

// why doesn't his hair catch fire?//

Everyone has missed the most obvious point, he don't catch on fire cause he's Slash, he's bigger than that...

he's bigger than laws of nature or thermodynamics ...

but only if he's in his leather pants.

i'm not that fussed over shredding, just talking about decent guitar playing!great melody in solo's is the most importatnt thing to me, Dave Gilmour for eg.. Speaking of that, great news that Pink Floyd reforming for the Live 8 concert, including Roger Waters.

//Pink Floyd
I just got into them, and then they reform!

I think it is doubtful though that they will reach their height of greatness (see the Live at Pompeii DVD for their greatness in a nutshell)

Have you seen the making of "Dark Side Of The Moon" documentary on dvd, that's great also.

The live at Pompeii DVD has some footage from the Dark Side Of the Moon recording sessions... which is very interesting indeed. Haven't seen the making of DVD though.

Yeah it's worth seeing if your'e a Floyd Fan, but going back to Live At Pompeii, man that version of Echoes is great, i love it.

//We all know that guitar playing was pushed to it's absolute peak
technically in the 80's shred era

well, that's contentious.
Maybe a certain peak, certainly some unprecedented stylistic lows, but I wouldnt say the absolute technical peak.

People like yourself should strive for new frontiers of guitar playing!!

Listening to a gymnastic guitar solo from a random 80's band, the backing rhythm tracks were always so sterile/unimaginative... take Surfing With The Alien- brilliant, melodic guitar playing, but oh someone please do something about the 'Danger Zone' rhythm guitar...
BTW I got my replacement drivers licence today, but it's still got my old licence picture in it from when I had shoulder-length long hair.
*stares longingly at his old haircut from the edge of the cliff at sunset*

//Surfing With The Alien- brilliant, melodic guitar playing, but oh someone please do something about the rhythm guitar

yeah foetus, that is a great example. Satriani's work on this, his best album, was impressive but often the musical context was bereft of groove and other ideas apart from shred.
And this is why no one should stop yearning.

Hell, i cant believe I have just made out like i know about this sort of shit

I think the rhythms on Surfing with the alien were perfect for the album, and how's the groove on Satch Boogie, it's great in my book. All the sounds on the album are very proccessed but that was partly what made the album so ground breaking and ahead of it's time. The Extremist is a great album also, anyone heard that one?

Ok, speaking of shredding.

Why did Ralph Machio's character beat Steve Vai in the guitar duel in 'Crossroads'.

Answer:

Cos the blues beats limp-wristed 80's metal hands down, every time, SOFTCOCK.

It actually was Vai who recorded the parts Machio played(aside from the slide parts) so he kicked his own ass.

I loved hating Vai in Crossroads, but I've always had a soft spot for Satch, don't know why. I think its because (relative to other guitar virtuoso instrumentalists) he's got the most soul.

Really? It all sounds like bloated cliche after bloated cliche to me. His backing tracks are just dismal.

What Satch have you heard? if you mean Surfing With The Alien, that of course had Drum machine on some tracks but to insult his incredible chord work, you must be somewhat naive. You couldn't of heard of Stu Hamn the amazing bass player he had for years or any of his great drummers, maybe you should know a bit more before slagging off a genius.

I reckon Satch is way cool relative to other instrumental guitar virtuosos, but the genre doesn't really do anything for me in the first place... but I'll freely admit I used to have a couple of Satch albums, and the rhythmic & melodic work on tracks like 'War' from The Extremist is much better than any of the Alien stuff.

Portia, surely you can't be a guitarist cause mate you're clueless, Joe satriani is one of the technical players that has great feel and a musical soul, that's why the guy's survived. I bet you're into real crap!

i am inclined to agree with you gatman. Although I do see how usually that kind of guitarist is just boring indulgent drivel, Satriani is a bit of an exception. What I've heard of him is not soulless at all.

Anyone with half a musical brain would realize that Satch is a very talented musician and song writer ,even if his stuff aint your cup of tea. Portia i'd love to see you write a song as great as "Aways with me always with you" or "Tears in the rain"the chord work is brilliant and the dude writes great melodies. Wake up!

Who told you he was dead? i only saw him in concert here a few months back, i haven't heard anything about him dying.

You've lost me!

Read up a few posts... lilith's not talking about Satriani.

In actual fact, he aint dead. Lillith are you shit stirring?

pity hes
dead

Who's dead?

yeah I concur with Libra
but Gatman, you are right that Surfing with the Alien is really quite groovy. It's a really good album

satch=armstrong

satrianis
diminutive is
ani

& im not
sure hes a
genius

specially
not when
compared to
satch

satch

Mate, being technically good at their instruments doesn't make them geniuses, they're still capable of (and are guilty of) making terrible, self-indulgent music. Joe Satriani's just that guy in the rock shop playing the Ibanez with the pointy head on the Line6 amp, impressing everyone with his rad whole tone sweep picking, taken to the Nth degree. He can't songs to save himself.

hung his
horn up in
the 70s

The Fucking Champs 'shred' with a nice blend of irony and innovation. You got to check them out.

Yeah, I'm not big on my 80s metal, but I do enjoy these guys...

Slashes' guitar isn't plugged in in the november rain video. He gets a good sound considering.....
I'm a drummer.
