Apologies if this is inappropriate, but being such savvy muso types I figure someone must have got an iPod recently. Anyway one point me in the direction of a good price? or somewhere where they've throwing in free cradles or anything?
thanks

Don't mean to sound like a dick, but have you checked all the alternatives to iPods and confirmed that you reckon an iPod is what you want?

having said that, if anyone has advice or experiences to pass on it'd be greatly appreciated...

BUT it would bug me if I couldn't upload from iTunes, which seems likely.

Well my flatmate is on his 3rd Ipod - the last two had terminal faults which couldn't be repaired. In fact most people I know who have owned Ipods have had some technical problems with them, and most have had to get them replaced at some point.
Make sure you get a decent warranty with it if you're buying brand new.

I got an iRiver H340 and it was a really good deal before the iPod prices dropped.
Colour screen, plays little movie files if you feel the urge, plays other audio file formats which I prefer (eg. Ogg Vorbis), really easy to manage files, internal mic to record direct to MP3, line in to record direct to MP3, radio (which you can also record), comes with cradle, works with both Mac and PC.
The one thing it cannot do is handle DRM content, which I think means most MP3s bought from the iTunes shop. Also not sure about AAC or whatever Apple's proprietary (sp? doesn't look right) file format is... But that's not what everyone's talking about with iTunes anyway, is it? I haven't used the player much, but the iRiver just appears as its own drive, so you just drag files back and forth into the folders you want.
It's not without hassles, in particular it's bigger than an iPod and has a bad 80s Taiawanese nightclub veneer, but I'm happy with it.
Oh, not sure if it comes with headphones, but anyone who still wears those little plugs that wreck your ears deserves what they get. :P

Oh, and am not trying to play "my brand is better than yours", a few friends have iPods and are very happy with them. I just think they've done the classic Apple marketing strategy of trying to suggest their product is the only thing available to do whatever (ie. play MP3s).

I've had my iPod for about 18 months now, I use it all the time and nothing's gone wrong with it so far.
I've even dropped it a couple of times and it's kept on working, but I recommend treating it with love and respect to ensure a long, fruitful live.

Absolutley! They are hi-tek items and you need to handle them carefully...
Interesting though the number of random faults which I've seen happen on them. One friend had the screen spontaneously crack (I was there when it happened - f*cking weird!) but most issues people I know have had are with their Ipod locking up. I understand that there is a HUGE variation in the manufacturing standards between models though...
Oh well...
[I'm way too poor to ever afford a Ipod - I'll stick with my hand me down CD player!]

I have a mate who's at college in America - the exchange rate being so good, and him getting student discount saved me about 120 bucks even with express shipping (to him). Although I think NZ prices have dropped since then, so maybe not so amazing now.
He almost got busted at customs, nearly shat himself while attempting to take 6 iPods through in his hand luggage to avoid the gift value limit, 'stop please sir' 'oh fuck' but it was just a few cans of peaches thank god.
