I thought it was the singer from dragon... and all the time I should have been thinking Hello Sailor... after this length of time they all fade into a blur

23) Chris knox?

Raised by adoptive parents in Invercargill -- the southernmost city in these shaky isles, aptly named the "asshole of the world" by Keith Richards -- Chris found the family piano and his brand new super-8 camera to be the vehicles for an insatiable young mind fuelled by the music of the Beatles, the Kinks, and Incredible String Band, and movies covered in famous monsters of filmland. But all that is more easily read about than discovered firsthand in Invercargill, and as soon as the chance came, Chris set off for Dunedin,

23) Martin Phillipps

12) headless chickens?

yeah thats the only listing I can find for the awards, but was !987 the 1st award?

No, the Chooks won the second one.
The answer is Ardijah.

I'm afraid to say - it was the Headless Chickens who wont the inaugural Rheineck Rock Award in 1987 - I was there! One of the "peppering of a few in black jeans and leather jackets who'd seen the Chickens before and kinda liked the dark, unholy racket they made" among all the suits looking totally out of place in the old City Hotel. Things calmed down in successive years: Breathing Cage won in 1989 - their website says that the two previous winners were Headless Chickens and Ardijah, who must have won in 1988 although google has no confirmation.

From "Stranded in Paradise" Jon Dix

"Ardijah, formed in 1980, have well and truly broken out of South Auckland, with two albums, a handfull of singles and the inaugural Rheineck Rock Award to their name".

Memories can be fallable.

There was a lot of controversy when the Headless Chickens won. They were (at the time) this weirdo avant garde electronicky band and not at all the sort of group normally associated with Reineck, rock or even pop. In fact, I believe Metro (or a similar publication) did a story on the controversy.

good skills:

Title: METRO ROCK : A pain in the rheineck
In: Metro (Auckland), Feb 1988; 7(80):195
Journal Article
Author: Gordon, Richard
Subject (Primary): Awards Pop music
Subject: Sponsorship
Abstract: Criticises the Rheineck Rock Award in its choice of 1987 recipient, 'Headless Chickens'.

24) I'm Samoan

//5) OMC's how Bizzare #1 in usa, yes no?

#1 of what.

It looks like it reached number 5, according to this.

sorry my bad the question was "a number 1 selling single"

yeah, there's a few US charts to pick from.

It did get to #1 on the combined sales/airplay chart, but not the Billboard Top 50 (which I think is what the above link is showing, and which is generally regarded as The Official US Singles Chart).

// the question was "a number 1 selling single"

so 'no', would be the safest answer.

10) match the successful Kiwi bands with their predecessors:

Basement = Dance Exponents (http://www.geraldinehs.school.nz/abo-ex-student2.php)
The Plag(u)e = Blam Blam Blam (interview in Kiwi Rock book)
Back Yard = Herbs (process of elimination)

Thank you all so much, if you are interested I'll put up the other questions via the nzmusic trivia topic, over on the best of the boards, that way I wont have to type them all out
and to the person who has Ready to Fly and Stranded in Paradise out on loan, your ploy of keeping them out past overdew, muhahaha , it didn't work.
