Surprised to see you can buy the US release of Horsepower as MP3s for US$5. More surprised to see it listed under Electronic / Ambience, but never mind...

The Phoenix Foundation is an excellent name for a band. Macgyver rules!

Phoenix performing with crazy new line up on thursday at the Valve, along with their usual mix of keys gats etc there will be lap steel, trombone, percussion and a smegamaphone!

New song "The Drinker" now doing the rounds on Active.

For a taste of local music while staring into your lunch check out bands on the balcony - 15th March - Harbour City Centre Balcony 12pm.

Be there or be midely not spherical or rectangular (or octagular or anything apart from a square)

This being a rather outdated saying.......

Going for the record of having the most - (I actually typed moist at first, was it someone seedy who put the i and o next together on the first keyboard?) - posts in a row in an artist forum I now present to you the news of the next Pheonix gig (if anyone cares -sniff....)

I care, but can't do Thursdays - but this Saturday at Bodega with Tommy is another Phoenix Foundation gig, yes?

Yes, you are correct.

um.....Choice!

Seeya

kinda reminds me of mellow atom heart mother styles - nice piano

Harry's Social Club, bayswater, london. comfortable velvty couches. dimly lit. table service at night. a key to let you in after hours. A tall Bombay Sapphire. All that's missing is this song in the background.

I've seen the Phoenix Foundation a couple of times now - like a lot.

Did I hear a little Grandaddy influence in there?
If not, then check out Grandaddy - you'll love it.
If you are influenced by them - then good on ya... so am I.

Since I seem to be the band sysop I'll field this one guys.....

Yes, I believe Grandaddy is a favourite band of most of us (umm, this seems like bad grammer.)

Hey, and thanx for the compliment. You really are a nice guy, eddie.

yay!

Maybe if you (or anyone else) can name three more influences we'll put you on the door for next time (saving you a whopping $5)

Gomez, Sublime (on occasion), Spareklehorse?, Belle and Sebastian?, Mogwai (again, occasionally - with the noisy free formish type stuff)...

How am I doing?

mate, you are doing great!

Gomez - not personally but I think Luke + Sam might be.
Sublime - Whoa! one from left field. I really like Sublime (must have been the year living with a bunch of frat boys.) On what occasions?
Sparklehorse- Yo - at least on Con, Luke and Sam's front.
Belle and Sebastian - Like, totally!
Mogwai - Not to sure about this one.

That makes you a winner!

Next time we play (won't be for at least a month though) you can consider yourself as a man with free passage (if you so desire.)

Nice playing with you.

Thank you and goodnight......

I would love free access to a gig, man. You playing Bodega again? I like Bodega.

Sublime:
A couple of times the last time I saw you play, you slowed down and went a bit reggae/slow ska... everything just kinda lays back and grooves... in a similar fashion to Sublime when they do that...
Mogwai:
Only mentioned Mogwai in relation to the little "lose it" moments. Never mind.

Have you heard much else from the Scottish scene that Belle And Sebastian are from?

yeah, the Bodge would be choice!

I mean that place is just so nice to play at because

a) it is easy to get a least 10 of your friends/family along to make it seem packed.
b) I is rather intimate (if a bit cramped sometimes, but you get that quite often with intimacy..)

Fair enough comment for the Sublime bit (Ritchie is pretty much a reggae drummer by trade, which is fine by me!)

so yeah

Word

Hey there Nice Guy. Luke here. Never heard Sublime (dodgy I know...), but B&S, SparkleHorse, Grandaddy and Mogwai are all amongst my most often payed cd's.

As far as the Scottish scene, a mate of mine has just bought The Reindeer Section, with members of Mogwai, B&S, Arab Strap and more, and to tell you the truth it's nice, but not mind blowing...

What HAS been blowing my mind though is Miles Davis "Bitches Brew". If you have not heard this, get it man! It makes most of the free form shit this day sound tame! It's frightening. Also "Live-Evil" by the same man, where he plays his trumpet through distortion and wah wah.

I don't pretend to understand it, but I do recommend it.

Bitches Brew is an outstanding album - I borrowed it off a friend a couple of months ago and am still listening to it!

As for the Scots... Interesting thing: The Sick Anchors is a drunken jam featuring a guy from Mogwai, A guy from Arab Strap (God I love Arab Strap), and some miscellaneous drummer.
Another Interesting thing: The Gentle Waves is Belle and Sebastian, but with Isobel Campbell singing all the time. It is a very nice album indeed... quite expensive, though.

Ever heard of Slint? Godspeed You Black Emporer? Papa M?

Hey guys, where can I get a copy of your EP?

Record stores aren't being very helpful.

Ummm......

Maybe Smoke CD's still have a couple, failing that get back to me here and I'll send you one (of the 150 or so we have left)

Word down (to the record stores that didn't have the CD)

Oh yeah,

There should be another EP around in a couple of months time as well.

Yay!

I second that Yay - even if your one is a little biased!!

Ha!

No luck finiding one, man. Are you selling them at gigs? When's your next one?

Contact me at t_c_hansen@hotmail.com and I arrange some way of getting one to you (saves doing it through the forum)

Selling them at gigs, should be, aren't really, maybe we'll start!

We are going into the 'studio' for a week around the start of July and should have something out not long after that. We would like to thank Mr Lee Prebble of doing us the honour of accompaning us through the process!

You are aware mr eddie that many of our songs are availible through our website?

It has been a pleasure communicating with you through the medium of this forum (sorry about the flowery language but I've just finished writing essays and I'm pretty fried!)

http://www.wkds.co.nz ]

The band that won the wanganui rockquest were called
"the beatnik's foundation" hmmmmm...wasn't you guys in disguise was it?

peace man.....

So! Ha Ha Ha. Real Groovy should have one, bastards.

And, err (2 years late) yes I have heard God Speed, and I thought they were almost a little TOO interesting if you know what I mean... heard a lot about SLint but never actually heard. As for Papa M, are they like, related to Papa Roach cause if so, fuck yeah! Those guys are like totally heavy! (this is intended sarcasm).

At the moment I am having a guitar and songs kinda period with the Smiths, Morrissey, The Cure, Stone Roses et al gracing my stereo most often.

Although I must most heartily recommend Yo La Tengo's "And then Nothing turned itself inside out.". It is very touching.

I would just like to add that I am very excited about this upcoming recording, and also, hoo-ray.

Oh man, Papa M wish they were Papa Roach - those guys f*cken kick my ass all over the world........... such realistic and heart felt lyrics those guys have........ they really represent the band for the WHINEY BITCHES they are. Staind too.

Did anyone see Yo La Tengo at Orientation a few years back? - t'was a beautiful thing.

Hurry up and play - it's always a good night...

Hey Dudes (fake Swedish accent)

Just to let you know that Slowboat now has a couple of copies for you mr eddie!

cherrio

Rock on.

If you like Slint, check out The For Carnation's self-titled album (it's a more recent project from the same singer/creative force behind Slint, Brian McMahon). I fully recommend the last track on the album, 'Moonbeams,' it's beautiful :)

I own and love The For Carnation's self-titled album, my friend...

Hey fellas....

Phoenix Foundation and Tommy

Bodega

Saturday

Yay......

(niceguy eddie, this one's on us)

SHITSHITSHITSHIT. Missed it.

I passed out at 9pm after getting back from Gomez in Auckland. Next time...

Yah poor bugger!

No worries, next time it is (no idea when that is yet though).

Hey guys...

I've got the China Cove EP. I think you're music's really choice :) There's a lot of stuff going on in your songs, particularly 'Healing Hands' - there's enough ideas there for two or three songs but you manage to weave it all together into one consistent piece of music. Nice stuff :)

I can't wait for more... Will the new EP have The Drinker and Blue Summer on it? Oh, and there was a song playing on Active a while back, it had a guy and a girl doing a duo, the words were something like "Some early morning when I'm straight / I'm gonna open up your gate /" The chorus ended with the girl singing "Pedra is my name". Was that you? I remember the DJ saying it was. But maybe my memory or the DJ was wrong...

Anyway, I'll be there tomorrow night.

The EP will most definitely have The Drinker on it and maybe a band version of Blue Summer (the other version is all done by Luke).

At the mo it looks like a good 8 or so songs may make their merry way onto silicon.

Ummm...girl/guy thing, not too sure, I know I wasn't there and I don't think any of the other guys did this (hmmm...interesting).

You have good time at gig yah?

That guy/girl duo is "Some Velvet Morning" by Lee Hazlewood and Nancy Sinatra. I believe it was covered by somebody-or-other on the Snakeskin soundtrack(?), but don't think it was Phoenix Foundation.

Pretty sure it was Space Dust who did the ome Velvet Morning track on the Snakeskin CD.

just out of interest, is 'This Charming Van' any sort of reference to the Smiths 'This Charming Man'? Oh yeah i like you guys by the way. Well the track on Murmur that i've heard anyhow.

Thanks bro!

Yeah, that is a blatent allusion to the Smiths, you caught us (the shame).

There's some more tracks to download at www.wkds.co.nz (a site we are part of) in the audio island.

Did anyone catch the live to air on Tuesday (on Radio Active)? I should have bloody well said something!

What did you think?
