Whats the point?

what is the point in supporting NZ music, by buying the album when it first comes out ONLY to have it be re released a couple of months down the track with a bonus disc and whatever else,

Elemeno P did it, Steriogram have done it,
Pacifier have done it (i think) ,
The feelers have done it

It is really fucken annoying, why not release them both at the same time so you can choose what disc to buy and just charge a few dollars extra for the bonus one,

Thats my tuesday bitch session

Forums: NZ Music,

Agreed.

me too

//I think it is only right and proper that we should be able to turn up to the record shop with our original, (unburnt iriman) copy and just be able to buy the bonus disk

Damn Straight Aka !! (you'd have to do a swap with your original for a full new copy though, otherwise everyone could just use their mates copy and pass it on to the next . . .)

Salmonella Dub are guaranteed to do it, hahaha

It used to be that the ‘Bonus-Limited Edition’ versions came out first, which would encourage people to go out and but them straight away, but I guess the powers that be realised that some people will go and buy an album twice to get the ‘extras’

But yeah I agree, it’s annoying

dont the Dub release like 3 other cds from the same album, "inside the dub plates" , "inside outside the dub plates". and some other album remix of both its mental

does that define what "selling out" is?

//selling out

Nah I don't think so, actually thinking about it, the Dub aren’t too bad considering they usually realase it as a spereate remix album . . . What annoys me more is if an album is re-relased later on with an extra five or so songs tacked on, and you don’t want the whole album only those few extra tracks . . . but fuck em’ this is where burning comes in.

I suppose it’s an incentive for those people who were kind of like ‘Meh’ about buying the album before . . .

Man, thats some crap-arse spelling LugHead you dork.

//this is where burning comes in

yes but with Kiwi artists its hard burn the extra songs, unless a friend has the album with the extra tracks of course, because they arent on the net anywhere

unless your savage and Akon, because then your music is everywhere including clogging up my computer and itunes for some stupid reason,(namely 14 yr old sister)

//dont the Dub release like 3 other cds from the same album
No, but they are to be commended for the changes they have made with making the other material available for purchase & releasing stuff with bonuses.
Case in point the Kaikoura Roots CD. I wonder if a DVD is in the pipeline.

And commerce students think antagonism toward them is unjustified...
Sounds like a marketers'/accountants'/managers' dream...

//what is the point in supporting NZ music, by buying the album when it first comes out

It's worth pointing out that it's not only NZ artists who have it done to them.

yeah, I read it as this though -

what is the point in supporting NZ music, (*during NZ music month*) by buying the album when it first comes out (*in May*) ONLY to have it be re released a couple of months down the track (*like August*) with a bonus disc and whatever else,

yes true

but its only NZ artists that I have come across who have done it,
Greenday "American Idiot", Eminem "Encore" and "The Eminem show", Metallica "St anger",
Linkin Park "meteora", Nickleback "The Long Road"(although with this one Im not sure if it had a "normal" version) they all released the special edition one and the standard album at the same time,

Puddle of mudd have released 3 versions of "Come Clean"I think, the original album, then album with 4 extra songs, then the album with a bonus dvd, plus the 4 extra songs,

Maroon 5 have just released "Songs about jane" again with acoustic tracks and have just released a live Ep too,
Slipknot did it with the subliminal verses also I believe, but that was more to do with the BDO than anything.
So yes international artists do it aswell,

But in my experience generally international artists release all their versions at the same time, its these greedy like Kiwis thats release the albums at different points

//what is the point in supporting NZ music, (*during NZ music month*) by buying the album when it first comes out (*in May*) ONLY to have it be re released a couple of months down the track (*like August*) with a bonus disc and whatever else,

which is exactly what steriogram have done, BASTARDS
I bought their album when it first came out, and this month they are re releasing it with 7 new songs I think,

When Wilco released Yankee Hotel Foxtrot in Australia it had a bonus disc. Not sure if it was a re-release or not but it doesn't matter because Wilco made the bonus disc available on the interweb so that people who already had the CD could download it. I'm pretty sure it was the band's idea to do this given their relationships with labels.

Am I right in remembering QOTSA's Songs for the Deaf was originally released in NZ as a CD/DVD package?

What Wilco did, now that is a cool idea, genius idea, that way everyone wins

//Am I right in remembering QOTSA's Songs for the Deaf was originally released in NZ as a CD/DVD package?

Absolutely, that's the one i bought. It has about 4-5 videos on it.

//Greenday "American Idiot", Eminem "Encore" and "The Eminem show", Metallica "St anger",
Linkin Park "meteora", Nickleback "The Long Road"(although with this one Im not sure if it had a "normal" version) they all released the special edition one and the standard album at the same time,

Just as I say that, Greenday are now re releasing American Idiot with a bonus DVD, with two music videos and the making of Holiday and boulavard of broken dreams

Agreed, Dimmer did it also. Sola Rosa as well, I think.

//Dimmer did it also. Sola Rosa as well, I think.

Dimmer or Dimmer's record label? Sola Rosa or Sola Rosa's record label?
I know that I've talked to a band or two who weren't particularly happy with their albums being rereleased like that but who said it was out of their control.

The Sola Rosa ep was available for purchase individually prior to the Album.
I'm sure Dimmer offered the bonus disk at gigs didn't they.

dimmer's one was a little bit special as it was a recording of a live acoustic show they did well after the initial release - same with pacifier (mentioned above). If you think about looking back of a band's discography it kinda makes sense to simply reissue the album with a bonus rather than just issue a new EP with the same songs only different. But yeah, Wilco did it right.

Dimmers one was really good i thought....as for the record company doing it without his approval I doubt that very much. the fits got the bad shit from their us label like 12 years ago or something and i am sure Shane is too shrewd to be in a situation were he doesn't have control over his stuff.

//Dimmer or Dimmer's record label? Sola Rosa or Sola Rosa's record label?

Either way, it doesn't really make a difference to the fans that show their support when the album is first released.

I bought You've Got To Hear The Music the first week it was released, and it was a bit stink to see a special rerelease or whatever in the shops a couple of months later. I do know that Shayne was giving away copies of the bonus cd on the Dimmer website, but I didn't know it was happening at the time so I missed out.

// why not release them both at the same time so you can choose what disc to buy

Sometimes the bonus disk has content that was not in existence when the CD was originally released, e.g. music videos made later, live performances recorded later.

indeed,

then they should release it as a single , with the bonus stuff on, which then allows you to buy it seperately for those who have already bought the disc, or even put a special code or slip into the cd case and you can take that in to the record store and exchange that for the bonus disc, should one come out,

there are so many possibilites and well easier and cheaper ways than re releaseing an entire album with the bonus disc, so it must just be a money thing, trying to get as much from one album as possible before you release the next, steriogram are in the process of writing and recording a second album, so why not release the bonus stuff then?

could it be money reasons?

haha I am quite bitter about this topic as you can probably see, you think you are doing them a favour by supporting them only to be slapped in the face a few months down the track when they release the bonus shit grrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrr

When I was about 13, I had a special tour edition cassette of Angel Dust by Faith no More, which included a live version of a song called Mark Bowen from a concert in Munich. I lost the tape at some stage in my teenage years, and have tried without success to find that song.

The original song is on We Care a Lot, which means it was sung by Faith No More's original (and indescribably shitty) original singer Mark Bowen. The new live version was sung by Mike Patton, and was awesome.

Faith No More were in the bad habit of always releasing an album, and then rereleasing it with additional tracks. Usually those additional tracks were great, and now you can't get them anywhere. (Mark Bowen was the original guitarist for F'n'M by the way, before Jim Martin joined).

Not sure why I told this story, but I guess it is indicative of how we all get f*cked around by the music industry, and often the extra material is withdrawn from circulation almost as quickly as it arrived by unscrupulous record labels.

When I was in my flannel shirt wearing stage, Alice in Chains released Sap as an E.P, a few of my flannel shirt wearing mates got it and I thought 'fuck that's cool, I'll get it when I save up enough pocket money to buy both my weekly pot supply and the E.P' . . . . by the time I had enough money saved up it had dissapeared from existence, woe was me, lucky I had some pot though . . . . but then later when they released Jar Of Flies, Sap was the bonus disc, 'Yay !! that's very nice of them to think of me like that' I thought . . . apparently my mates weren't to impressed though as they already had it . . .

(actually I still wear the odd Flannel shirt, but now it's when I'm doing dirty work on my car or to keep warm etc not to sulk around stoned in)

//actually I still wear the odd Flannel shirt

My flannel shirt is as thin as cheese cloth now.

Long before the days of Real Groovy (at least in Welly anyways) there was that great cd store in Cuba Mall that used to have second hand cds in it sometimes - that's how I got Tool with a bonus cd, and probably L7 with a bonus cd as well. This was in the days before the internet so I didn't even know that the bonus discs existed before I saw them in the store. Ahhh the good old days...

hey yeah, I think I know the store you're talking about, there was only ever one guy behind the counter - some old dude with a mostache, and if you were into metal they had a wicked selection there as well.

//and if you were into metal they had a wicked selection there as well.

And a ridiculously large range of Tori Amos singles for such a small place - if you want to talk about expensive collecting, there's a prime example, with the British and American and Other versions of singles all having different track listings and large prices to boot... luckily it was my sister's addiction and not mine.

//The original song is on We Care a Lot, which means it was sung by Faith No More's original (and indescribably shitty) original singer Mark Bowen.

Oops - that should be Chuck Moseley. And he really did suck.

well. if you can say anything nice about 48may. They are re-releasing their album with two new tracks. You can currently download both those tracks for free for a limited time from amplifier. Thats pretty fair i reckon.

48 MAY is mean nuthing against them though but yeah thanks for the inFo
WHO reckons the LEAd SINGER from 48 may is HHOOOOTTT .......(ouch)lol

COZ I think he is......lol

and now fucken Op shop are doing it too,

NZ music month now just an excuse to re release shit when they could have done it before or wait until the next album, just like valentines is an excuse to raise rose prices and sales of heart shaped boxes of chocolates

AAAAAAAAAAAARGGGGGGGGGGGGGGGGGGGGGGGGGGGGH.

I ordered You've got to hear the music, and in the week or so that it took to get delivered the one with the special bonus cd came out. I thought that was just bad timing.

Now I ordered some cds ten days ago and I've only just got an email saying they're being delivered - so of course half an hour after I get that email I get another one with a sale advertised and now the cd that I ordered is a good chunk cheaper. Grrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrr. The world is out to get me.

7 day right of return, bundle up & send back.

bonus discs, "tour editions", "specially repackaged"... it's all standard major label marketing bullshit that kicks in once the sales of an album start to level out.

gives the old girl one last good thrashing before it's time to turn back to the artist and say "well, you still havent recouped despite the fact that we went to all that effort and expense to take some more cheesy as fuck promo shots of you, snazz your album cover up, throw on a digipak and some bonus shit, ooooh you're gonna owe us BIG TIME now"

i think it's a continuing exercise in quick/easy dollar making and any artist that does it is just condescending their fans (those who dont make the material a separate release or let fans freely download it).

sure it's a trade off for the artist- do I try and sell more records here, or should I maintain my artistic integrity and steer away from the common practices that all these other major label artists are giving in to?

still cant decide what side of the fence you're on with this one? do what I do- just ask yourself,

"what would bill (hicks) say?"
