well aside from the spam texts I got, I actually receieved a whole lot of text messages from people I hadn't heard from in ages asking what I was up to and how I was... nice to know i'm worthy of their free text messages. Heh, but since I have nearly no money on my phone, they'll have to wait till next weekend for replies.

So this is a clever way of fighting back, given that the free texting only applies to vodafone-to-vodafone which costs them nothing in interconnection fees.

why? I would say prime texting times would be during the weekend, people out at clubs etc trying to find people and lets not forget the random drunk texts, as long as its vodafone to vodafone they wont be making anything from them

You also have to look it from a strategic point of view.
Some people are not going to notice whether they're texting a telecom phone or not.
People are going to get in the habit of texting more, so when the promotion ends, there will be a net gain.
It may also entice some customers away from telecom.
Friday evening until midnight is not included I think, so if they get people in the habit of texting more on Saturdays, it will have a carry-over effect for Friday nights out as well. It's pretty easy to see from the way people's textage has increased since $10text, that long-term, there are good gains...

Texting can be a pain in the ass for stuff like that! So much simpler just to make a call. Hence my large phone bill.

Actually I'd be happy with Vodafone if they'd just raise their PATHETIC 20 free texts (on the get200 plan) to something decent, like 100, seeing as much of my bill comes from texting. The deals in Australia are much better than they are here.

Ok sorry it's Monday and i'm not coping with it very well.

I am suprised that they (Vodafone) haven't yet brought a plan for texting yet, like the get200 or get100,

200 or 300 free texts and then every text after that is like normal price or maybe cheaper for $40 a month or something,

mind you they have that double up every now and agan and im still using the money from the one we had last year sometime, so i guess that makes up for it

They will definitely be losing money on off-peak free texts - no interconnection fees, but they still have their own overheads to meet. That's not really the point though - the point is that Vodafone are conducting a predatory pricing campaign to undermine Telecom's $10 texts. Free texts on the weekend is calculated to get customers to switch back to Vodafone and increase revenues in other areas (calling, connection fees, texts during on-peak times etc). It also encourages people to use free texts rather than free minutes, which is cheaper for Vodafone and means people won't get as much out of their GO200 and GO100 plans.
