I hear The Cross is closing/amalgamating with Zebos.
Is this due to the apartment building that has sprung up next door or are they not breaking even these days? And does this spell the end of another Wellington venue?

Well it wasn't really the best venue ...
Well it wasn't really the best venue in the world. In fact it was pretty shit. Which is sometimes good I guess

the cross is a friendly place that treats bands pretty well. Good man on the sounddesk and a great vibe. Its a real shame it's such a poo's PA and so small. It had potential and i think has come quite a way over the few years its been around for, would be a real shame for it to fade away now.

A very friendly venue that looks after bands!
For new (and established) bands The Cross is one of the best places to make some money. In fact for nearly any band it is the best place to make some money. Free sound man saving you $80-$100, free poster distribution saving you another $80-$100. Not only can you save a lot of money and therefore make some good money by being well organised and well promoted the bar give you a few complimentary drinks and good specials.
Our best gig last year took $1400 on the door which gave a generous contribution to a Hamilton band and a Napier band and had enough leftover to shout all the bands a meal and pay the Wellington band as well!
The Cross Bar is also allowed to have (from memory) 190 people which makes it significantly bigger than Happy (??) and The Valve (90).
Take advantage of the generous nature of The Cross Bar while it is still there as it is there .
I will miss The Cross!

I agree. They're really good with allowing inexperienced bands to play first gigs, and very understanding when they aren't so good. I wonder who'll pick up the slack? Valve maybe?

I played there last night with a band called Stratocruzer (who have made improvements in leaps and bounds - cheers for the invites boys). The soundmen we had last night (there were two) were really shit. They did not even mic up my snare, or my guitarists amp. One of them complained that is was a small room and we did not need to mike things up. Why the fuck have a soundman at all?? I think they were just lazy. We could have managed the PA ourselves without them. I played there a couple weeks ago and we had a soundman called blair. He was a big dude with dreds and an absolute mistress on the sound desk. We love you Blair!!
Actually there is another soundman ...
Actually there is another soundman called blair that often works Valven and he is pretty spanktastic with the sound too. Maybe there is somethong about soundmen called Blair - any thoughts?
Wait - Im going to post a new thread. Im getting excited already!!

Can't be the same guy, unless he can grow 3 foot dreds in a matter of months. (perhaps that is within the power of a good soundman?)

It wil be a shame to loose the cross, ...
It wil be a shame to loose the cross, the bar has always been supportive in offering gigs to unknown bands and acting as a launch platform. If the cross goes then alot of stress will be placed on the wellington scene. Valve is great but booked months in advance. Indigo have their rock cradle but are not generally interested in bands than can not provide them with a demo and would usually prefer more established acts. Bodega could pick up some of the slack but have a fairly full bill.
I would imagine that if the cross goes Eastside could stept in. VUWSA are good about giving bands ago and Eastside are not so busy that they couldnt fit in another night or two of live music a week. The P.A is better than the cross had and they generally look after their acts their.
That said it would be sad to see the cross go, it had the shitest P.A in wellington and a tiny stage but is served its pupose
