It is disappointing to me that in some cases if an artist has any connection with New Zealand we promote them as New Zealand Talent. I love that band "The Veils". On some radio station they are branded as NZ'ers from Devonport yet a recent article I read had the singer saying that he considered himself a Londoner. He was born and raised in London and only spent a few years out here with his Grandmother. To me their sound is fantastic and quite clearly sounds english. I dunno maybe I am just being picky but there is this element out there who wants to lay claim to talent just because there is a 'small' connection with our beautiful country......Look at the Datsuns, NZ music industry personell said they sucked until england got hold of them....

our drummer is canadian but id class us as a kiwi band
its a shame that you have to go overseas to get noticed but its just how it is. Cause people dont appreciate what we have in NZ till other countries go ohhhhhhhhhh woowwwwwwwww and somehow that gives bands credit.

It's called "an angle" - news is deemed to be more "worthy" if it's local. It's like three deaths in NZ being much more newsworthy than 10,000 overseas for a vague example.

Speaking of vauge examples...

Crowded House, Phar Lap.. all Australian.

Compare and contrast the settings of Phar Lap's skeleton in Te Papa and his hide in the Melbourne Museum.
In Te Papa the skeleton is displayed in a plain glass case in the middle of a walkway, like, "Oh, where can we put this? Ooh, there's a space."
In Melbourne the hide is on display in a special area, complete with velvet curtains and velvet rope, giving an regal feeling to it.
While Phar Lap may have been born in New Zealand, I get the feeling that he means much more to Australians than he does to New Zealanders.
And besides, horses don't have passports.

yeah i'm sure most of us wouldn't like to claim Daniel and Natasha Bedingfield as our own, but it is, as you say, an angle for the media.

I was born in the UK to a swedish mum and pommie dad but I live in NZ now, and am much prouder of New Zealand than I ever was of Sweden or England.... I'm not a kiwi, but I write and make my music here... so I'd rather my music was considered kiwi music, even if it does have a lot of European influences.
