The government has decided that selling or buying nitrous oxide to inhale is illegal.
According to Jim Anderton, "... nos could cause harm to lungs, freeze-burns to lips from inhaling directly from the nozzle of dispensers, anaesthesia, collapsing and choking on vomit while unconscious."
Is that all? I thought the mass killing of brain cells would be of greater concern. I enjoy n2o as much as the next person - but can't you just feel yourself getting stupider?!

Instead of banning the sale of it, they should add stuff that reduces the fertility of the user or reduce their sex drive. It would be a good way of reducing the number of stupid people in the gene pool - a kind of unatural selection. Another bonus is people would be more reluctant to eat cream (n2o being used in whipping cream) and this would contribute to combating the obesity epidemic.

could? how about cigarettes? I hear they might cause damage to your lungs to. How about banning the sale of those for 'inhalation' purposes.

really? Has anyone ever experienced or even heard of this happening?

That's not strictly true. It's up to 50% N20, mixed with pure 02. If one were to hypothetically use it recreationally, I understand that one would usually use it neat, having attempted to exhale as much as possible, and then hold it in for as long as possible... and the alleged health risk comes as much from the not getting enough oxygen...
That said, if I remember my psychopharmacology correctly, it's also one of the least understood neurotransmitters

Incidentally, Kary B. Mullis, Nobel Prize winner, the man who discovered the Polymerase Chain Reaction (PCR; it's the key step in replicating strands of DNA which allows DNA testing, and the isolation of the genetic sequence), kept a tank of nitrous in the corner of his lab for his own recreational use. Rather like the Cider House Rules, he had a method so that if he lost consciousness the pipe would fall from his mouth, but fucked up one day. He believes a supernatural phenomena saved him (he also got particular bad freeze burns). Incidentally, he also says that PCR came to him in a vision while he was driving through the desert, and he doesn't believe that HIV causes AIDS. He's a very smart man, but a bona fide tripper.

It's called something like Antenox and it's way way better. When i was in hospital once the student nurse left a 25kg bottle of it in my room hooked up to this mask (the same as they oxygen types) so all you needed to do was put it to your face and hyperventilate, umm i mean breathe through it to get the pain relief i so desperatly needed. I just remember feeling like a jet fighter. heh.
Apparently Antenox so i'm assuming N2O it's quite bad for your bone marrow.

I've seen a friend get a burn, from having someone overenthusiastically thrust the thing in her face. It looked pretty much like a cigarette burn.

I've never tried nitrous actually, nor had much of a desire. Isn't it a similar thing to amyl (rush), where you're massively over-oxygenating your brain?
Bah. turns out I've been talking crap, ...
Bah. turns out I've been talking crap, Nitric Oxide (NO) works as a neurotransmitter, not Nitrous Oxide (N20). Turns out that the effects of Rush (Amyl Nitrate) are primarily due to it's decomposition into NO, which among other things relaxes and dilates (which also causes increased blood supply to the heart and subsequent oxygenation of the brain), plus a role in erectile function. The effect of NitrOUS oxide is as a dissociative, causing euphoria and dizziness.

//The government has decided that selling or buying nitrous oxide to inhale is illegal.
Actually it was already illegal under the misuse of foods act - it's not the government deciding that it is illegal - but it is illegal to sell it to a person where they are intending to inhale it (unless perscribed under medical supervision). Of course how they are going to identify that is anybodies guess.
For safe use NOS is supposed to be mixed with a 20% mixture of oxygen - which most people using it recreationally don't do.

...most people i've seen inhale in and out several times into a balloon, this would effectively cut it with the residual oxygen already present in your lungs (you can't breathe out 100% of your air....)
plus the small amount of air present in the balloon prior to inflation...it wouldn't be 20% but it would certainly be present...maybe 5 - 10 % ...
also the N2O itself may degrade in storage to form a percentage of 02 (oxygen gas) .. many things do this because oxygen molecules like each other... i don't know how stable N2O is though/..this is just a lame theory... but there's very few chemicals that achieve 100% purity

Yeah, except that air is about 15% oxygen, so 15% of bugger all is less. And it's not that stable, but it sits in equilibrium with another NO thing rather than free O2...
Although, ah, I think the problem is more with a carton a day for six months guy...
//government has decided that selling ...
//government has decided that selling or buying nitrous oxide to inhale is illegal
There was quite a bit of talk about that this morning on National Radio, but they weren't saying its going to become illegal, rather it already is. Apparently, and this has been kept pretty quiet, it is a prescription drug already, and the sale of prescription drugs to someone without a prescription is punishable with up to six months prison under the Medecines Act. I think obtaining without a prescription gets you three months, but Anderton is saying that the intent is only to go after sellers and to warn them first.
As for the health risks, someone else was talking about that - a couple of those canisters, (what are thery called? whippets or something) aren't a problem, but its when they get used with other substances or in too great a quantity (apparently we can tolerate about 40 canisters a week, but some users go through more than 10 a day) that fatalities arise.

....and lets not even get into the implications of holding hundreds of compressed gas canisters on your site without a location test certificate in place and approved handlers present at all times while the site is operating (Hazardous Substances and New Organisims Act 1996). Maximimum fine of $500,000 dollars (per breach), $50,000/day (per breach) whilst remaining non-complaint, insurance policy is void (without a location test certificate) and the potential of up too 3 months in prision - and if there are workers there then the operator can be nailed under the Health and Safety Act as well...

Brain cells die everyday. I'd be more worried about things that cause the death of enough cells to make a quantifiable difference, like lack of oxygen. Or blood. Maybe we should ban blood. Because blood kills brain cells really quickly, and in huge numbers. Evil stuff that.

I'm not sure about rocket scientists, but I think there's pretty good evidence that some moderate recreational drug use doesn't cause a problem for a good many scientists... (that Kary Mullis I mentioned earlier, apart from the nos and the nobel prize, also had a predilection for weed and LSD among other things). In fact, most neuroscientists I know who look at the effects of various substances on the brain don't seem too convinced by the evidence for deleterious effects...

and all drugs aren't the same, so the effects wont' be the same either, but I'm guessing a substance that coats the outer surface of neurons, preventing nutrients entering, eventually causing them to die, isn't going to be good for overall intelligence - we think via connections between billions of these thikngs don't you know. Almost as bad as something that kills them directly.
Most drugs dont' kill brain cells either way, and as I've said I couldn't care less whats legal or what isn't, in my opinion e should be legal..

Can you find a reputable link to back this up? I know THC is absorbed into the myelin sheath, and lingers there for a surprising long time... but what coats the outer surface of the neuron and prevents nutrients entering it?

It'll depend a little. If you can make a reasonable case that you were selling food grade nos for the purposes of soda stream or whipped cream then it's possibly OK (if you look at the herald link it seems that some shops have been lawyering up as well). However, say you were using it for non food purposes within sight of the shop you bought it from, it's a little less clear...
Incidentally, it's fat soluble (like THC), so I wonder if it hangs round in your brain fat (myelin) for a while??

yeah, theres 3 different grades apparently... medical, food and automotive. Medical is now banned. food is available thru a loophole despite the late news showing the little cannisters. automotive is a cousin of mustard gas and should NEVER be inhaled. you'd drown in your own blood...
