Home to many genres and diverse bands and artists like Fly My Pretties, Rhian Sheehan, Black Seeds, Skallander, as well as compilations like Green Room or Kono, how cool is Loop Rec. really? What about the association with sponsors? How does that take away or add to the coolness of this label?

I think you're right, but not just cafe but also home/bach lounging.
I've sent many LOOP releases to expat kiwi's & have always had a much loved responce back.
Granted most have been compilations, but there is both a nice cross section of south pacific sweetness in both artist choice & overall feel..... quality contempory grooves.

Phil Broekelman left German label Compost Recordings to handle promo at Loop in March. This info is on the web, so doubt it's supposed to be a secret.

well then. I think NZ music.com regulars can make up their own minds about specific releases, and not have to subscribe to the idea of a label they just always buy no matter what because it's "cool". BUT the label has to be one that puts out consistantly good releases, so that people who Don't know so much about music can rely on it to be something they'd like if they liked previous stuff. Like for example Ninjatune. Consistantly good, downbeat/electronica. They wouldn't put a Jack Johnson record, would they.
Corporate sponsorship? I say milk them for as much as they're worth. If the multinationals like microsoft wanna get down with the Kids, and it enables Loop to put more money into the artist and marketing- well everyone wins, don't they.
Love to Loop though for spreading the word of NZ music overseas especially.

i wouldn't exactly blow my own trumpet about that lineup being "diverse".
though, thats a good thing. If i want rock'n'roll i don't look to loop. Loop do what they do well and should stick to it.
who cares about being cool? just put out good records that you believe in, that should be a priority. As soon as you try and guess what people think is cool and release something to gain you "cool" points...you become exceedingly uncool.

And yes, I work at Loop. . I'm from Germany, just moved here. New to da place. Basically, I was wondering how the relationship between sponsors and musicians is perceived here in Aotearoa? Kora got a career boost through their participation in a Coca Cola event, I understand, and lots of credible musicians don't seem to mind the Red Bull music academy.

I think it's fair to say the vast majority of people are not too concerned by the corporate sponsorship thing. I speak as someone who does have reservations, and I've been on a bunch of Loop releases, so hey...
I'm not sure what chunk of Loop's current audience is aware of the past incarnation as a magazine and all of that, but I guess because advertising has always been a massive part of glossy coffee table mags I thought it was just a given that Loop would continue to operate in that kind of mode.

More on the topic I think corporate sponsorship is not a bad thing at all, in fact it often aids bands and venues becoming establish and decent music getting heard.... nearly every venue in the uk is corporatley sponsored (the big ones) as are the music festivals such as The Reading/ Leeds festivals

Chur Bret! You're the bomb too! It's good for everyone to see that LOOP and Capital can respect each other and work together. Cause really we are all on the same mission and there is more strength in numbers. Peace Mikee LOOP
