Does anyone else get the feeling that we dont need another new Zealand music month? with the advent of Kiwi.... it's kind of NZ Music month every month and it just seems the more we keep hyping up this idea "nz music" as a brandname, an identity it is cheapining the good new zealand music out there. Just let music be music.... if it's written in NZ by and NZer it's all good but dont let it fall under the brand "nz music" .... enough is enough.

precisely....we dont need to make another event of it.... unfortunately all this hype will just create the backlash to it all... not nz music itself but the brand it's created...well it's allready started i guess with RDU's somenzmusicisshit campaihn
I do not believe we need a NZ music ...
I do not believe we need a NZ music month anymore. It was a great initiative when it started, but has now grown old. There is no longer a need to flog this dying horse, so that probably means the industry will keep it going for at least another 5 painful years.

i think it is important (for the pop industry) that it continues otherwise people do forget. As far as generating sales for the latest NZ pop albums NZMM hass and will continue to boost profile and generate sales. Most "un-informed" people who don't hear about music/bands unless it's shoved down their throats need the type of promotion that NZMM does to hear about these bands. NZMM doesn't affect me personally, i don't care if its there or not, but i definitely recognise the effect it has and respect it.
Just because it has been a success doesn't mean its time to stop it. Sure, we may be sick of it, but you can be rest assured there will still be a HUGE number of people in this country who have never even heard of New Zealand Music month.
I totally agree with this. Of course ...
I totally agree with this. Of course people who post on nzmusic.com don't need nz music month - most of us live new zealand music every day. It's for the uninformed masses who think new zealand music is Scribe and Savage, and have never heard of Die Die Die, the Fanatics or Pluto.
Either way, I think it's a great initiative. Why kill it? Last NZ music month I went along to a forum where some industry overs and shakers (from memory, the program director for C4, the guy who runs global routes, some promoter guy who basically schmoozed radio big wigs for the bands he worked for, and NZMIC's Cath Andersen) and learnt lots of good stuff. Also they gave out stickers and badges.
It isn't just about radio playing a few extra kiwi tracks. Plus here in the South, and I'm sure this is true for a lot of places, we have no Kiwi FM (on the radio at least) pumping out new zealand music 24/7. The industry doesn't begin and end with Auckland and Wellington.

Blink...that's a good way to look at ...
Blink...that's a good way to look at it. I asked my brother in Law yesterday where he thought goldenhorse were from and he thought they were british. There are still the uneducated.... but the point is why do we have to put a badge on and say "NZMusic"...it actually doesn't matter where they're from does it?. If it's good it's good. He still liked goldenhorse even though he didn't know it was NZ and it didn't matter one bit where they were from. I just see it in the end as getting detrimental to the actual music itself. If there was an NZ made car with an NZ made badge on it.... do you buy it cause of that??.. nah... it's whether it gets you from a - b...same with music??
// why do we have to put a badge on and ...

some people who would like to support the local industry need to be told what/who the local industry is

maybe instead of a generic NZ music ...
maybe instead of a generic NZ music month we change the tactics slightly and make it purely about unsigned nz bands.... how about that?.... imagine a month where you here loads of new stuff that even the bnets wont play. At least you'll discover some new music. or broaden the scope to cover classical, jazz and stuff..... it seems the pop/rock/indie side gets the thrashing but how many nz classical musicians do you know.... i personally couldn't name any
// imagine a month where you here loads ...
// imagine a month where you here loads of new stuff that even the bnets wont play
there's probably a reason if the bnets won't play it - ie it's not good enough to be played
that didn't used to be why they played ...
that didn't used to be why they played music, whether it was good or not. it used to be "this band's music is gonna crap out our desk but they are playing at venue-x this weekend and if you like them go along".
radio used to be so interesting when that happened. i'm pleased to say that Radio1 is beginning to play a heap of local music, and it's not to all tastes, and some of it sounds very low-fi but not in that fashionable "low-fi plug-in" retro trendy way, but Actual Low Fi ...
i don't think it's a matter of music being not-good or good, that's never the case really, there's always an audience out there no matter whether it's GG Allin or Wing, it's about exposing music that isn't necessary about the music industry and pleasing advertisers and playing friends-of-the-dj's friends.
i just think bands like Elixir in Flux should be played everywhere. not necessarily commercial music, potentially frightening to someone who's been fed processed over-produced no-humanity music, but arrrgh they are good and sometimes radio vs money vs trends is so unfair.
" imagine a month where you here loads ...
" imagine a month where you here loads of new stuff that even the bnets wont play"
sometimes there's a reason they won't play them, but anyways, nice idea.

me and some mates were at a BBQ, drinking beer and bashing out Clean songs on various instruments.
this guy gets to talking to me, complements our informal gig, and me never knowing how to take that (fark, i didn't write the stuff for a start) deflect by enthusing about the bands whose music we were playing.
the guy then accuses me of being elitist and going out of my way to like obscure bands.
can you believe that! i had no come back. i should have told him that i never head nz music of any consequence until i got to Dunedin, saw my friend Andrew's band play, went out to a few more pubs and saw the Clean, the 3Ds, Bailterspace, the Bats etc. and were thence converted.
that really made me very very sad. until people like that stop having a cultural cringe about the undergrounded-ness of our music, which is more relevent to us than anything else in the world, and is happening at a pub in your town, or a garage in your town, every week, we need NZ Music Month.

I hate to say it but most people in this country will never have heard of most NZ bands - even such notables as mentioned above (whom I grew up going to see). It sometimes leaves me a bit flabbergasted (love that word) at times - but then again not everyone cares about music, let alone local music.

BBQ dude wasn't joking ... he was talking to me as though i had spent a lot of unnecessary time and effort seeking out the most obscure stuff possible. he was concerned for my mental state. it was a real parallel universe conversation.

i didn't know what to say. it really made me feel incredibly naive though. and i happen to know a guy who both adores nz music and wears boat shoes.

i think it depends where you are, what city you are in, and what part of that city you are in. yeah, sure there might be a few posters around for some acts, but there's always a flurry of different bands and musicians happening for that month. i mean, some stuff, i don't even notice the posters cos subconsiously i guess i'm looking for the stuff i'm interested in - non-colour, badly photocopied, etc. even the general public will have their blinkers on in favour of the sort of aesthetic they're predisposed towards.
a flurry of activity is all good, even if the big names do a bit of flurry too.

kiwi music means different things for every1 - and i think that the way NZMM is 'dressed' is beside the point - apart from the ad campaign (and even after the fact) i dont think its exactly shoved down the general publics throat either - as much as say - local body politicians (who campaign for longer and we know theyre mostly all muppets)... i fail to see how NZMM hurts other than to appear as something corporate and evil to those outside the scope of its benefit. blah blah

that debarcle they had last year......free concerts for 24 or 48 hours....it was on tv and all......what a load of shit......although there was some talent in there a large part of it was crap in my eye and embarrassing to the talent that does exist out there....although I don't think pluto is talent, sorry

How about a "Make NZ music sound more ...
How about a "Make NZ music sound more American" Month? That seems to be the key to make it in this country.
The problem I've always had with NZ ...
The problem I've always had with NZ Music Month is that there seems to be no quality control on it. It's like Mother's Day or Valentine's Day in that it's become an opportunity for companies to pimp their goods, regardless of the quality.
Perhaps they could go back to NZ Music Week - having one intense week of celebrations instead of the long, drawn-out, "is it over yet?" month.
yeah but quality control is up to the ...
yeah but quality control is up to the listener. there's a bit more hype around, a few more posters, but all-in-all i think it encourages a few more bands out there - people still have to seek them out as usual, but the chances of hearing something interesting and original and compelling increase a bit as well.
as long as you put on your hype filters, there's no harm in it. i think the pros outweigh the cons. mind you, i'm saying that down this end of the country, where there's less in-yo-face hype and marketing for NZ Music Month related crapola, so perhaps i should shaddup!
