however...when answering the original question re: managers in wellington.
There are not really many "mangers for hire". Most good managers I know are managing a band they love. As there is not really any money in the business, most managers just work with bands they really passionately care about. I'd say you'll have difficulty approaching someone...just play kick ass shows, release good songs and then when the timing is right usually someone will find you. It IS important that you stay self-managed for a good while so you an learn how to do shit for yourself and make sure a manager won't take advantage of you.
IMHO, getting a manager was pretty much a neccesity- as a band, you share the same professional end goal, but often find it difficult to agree between yourselves on the right step forward. And as you get busier, important organisational things get neglected/overlooked, and some bad decisions can be made. The busier you get, the more you put at stake, and we you'll realise you aren't going to be able to do it without help- some people can do it all, but most of us aren't that organised. The hardest thing is admitting you need help, and committing yourself to looking for it.
Once you can pass this off to a manager, it's brilliant- it shifts your focus back towards the important things, ie writing and playing your music.
Discuss reimbursement with the manager at the beginning, because as things inevitably get busier, the manager spends more & more of their time helping you out, and you know you can only stretch the aroha so far. Sort it out in the beginning and avoid tricky situations down the track, even if your manager is your girlfriend/boyfriend. Think of your manager as part of the band.
And I agree with Blink absolutely- stick it out for as long as you can as self-managed, so you understand for yourself what is involved in the job and understand the responsibility you're handing over when the time comes.
bugger that, get a good accountant. they're much more use and will actually save/make you money.
there's about fifty million idiots out there who've read the Andrew Loog-Oldam biography and think they can 'help' :-/
of course, if you can get someone like Toby Larmer (ex-Trinity Roots) who's a good manager and great accountant as well. sorted!
Cheers for the comments.Sometimes you can get to the point where your way to busy to have to do everythimg yourself. The hardest thing is finding a person who really loves your music especially when its fairly fuckt up shit, and not extremly commercial.
What about that one friend who comes to every gig and helps you carry the gear to the car? Got one of those? Or (and I know this is scary) try a girlfriend, hey it worked for Ozzy :-)
My amp already goes to 11... but besides that, just go into a small record store and find the old balding guy who knows when every cd in the store was recorded and where and who played on each track, give him a quart of whiskey each day, a mobile phone, and the numbers of all record companies/ promo people/ venues/ other bands.... buy him some sunglasses.. You have a Manager Spinal tap inspired

really? I'd say that is a tad neive. Sure, many bands have done it on their own, but many bands have had great managers help them on the way.
