I thought quite a large percentage of bands made it through Nelson/Motueka (mainly because of AKA and her incredible hospilatlity) who come to the south island. You're faring better then Oamaru and Invercargil.

Well i dont live in Invercagil or Oamaru *thank god* (no offence to those of you who do) but compared to what chch and Duniden get ( i dont want to include the north island coz they get EVERYONE playing up there) we dont get PISS ALL. and it SUCKS. Considering we are a reasonable size city......

because to get to Wellington i have to bus to Picton ($50 both ways) and ferry to Welly ($80 both ways) not to mention party money and its worse to get to chch. its a 4 1/2 drive one way.... it is quite far and also rather petrol guzzling. and we are right in the middle of the country. bands must go OUT OF THEIR WAY to go around us to travel on to chch.!!!

yeah, but seriously. Nelson doens't get anywhere near the turnouts that dunners or chch get. There are no venues in nelson that treat you as well as venues in chch and dunners. Dave at Phat Club is as good a cunt as you can get, but, that doens't mean Nelson is a good spot to play. eg..if i'm booking a 3 day jaunt (as per usual) I can do chch, dun and if i play queenstown I can get the bands fed and drunk for free. This doens't happen in nelson. All you get is free venue Hire. When a band member cane spend $30+ a night on food and booze (multiply this by a ten person tour party) it makes economical sense to not play nelson.
Motueka is a different case. This is not to say that bands will stop playing nelson. I try to take 1 in every 2 or 3 tours there (even though I know i am losing money by doing so). Most bands doing full nationwide tours will make a stop there... ie The Mint Chicks in a couple of weeks.
nelson has a strong support for punk, ska and dub bands. other then these genres, it is hard to get more then 20 people along to your show.

umm..not really. They just drive down the coast through kaikoura and save themselves two-three hours and driving through (though very beautiful) the lewis pass which can be an ass with a trailer and van.

that kind of defeats the purpose of my topic in the first place!!! its all very well saying. why dont you go to where the bands play.... but i want the bands to come here.... we are one of the main cities in NZ (at least i think so considering our size) so they should. it seems maybe they arent playing at the right venues to get the right crowd if there is a problem with numbers turning up!

ok fair enough. i cant understand why you would get much of a turnout AT ALL in motueka though. its such a HOLE and very small. maybe you should try to get your bands to play at the Shark club! (across the road) usually GOES OFF in there when bands play. BTW when are the mint chicks coming here?

The show i did last month in Motueka was better then the 5 or so shows I've done in nelson over the past year. It kicked ass. An all ages venue (yet not cheesy) heaps of kids came over from nelson and danced all night. The Mint chicks are at the phatclub next thursday

you can go back throu my posting log and see how often I have posted or commented in this vein, so in the end I personally started asking bands to come, I couldn't take the true music fan in my house missing out on seeing good music, and if it ment i had to chuck a pot of soup on to boil and throw a few extra beds around my place so be it........
And what happens no body comes
There are two factors that I can see that lead to this problem
We have no gig guide and no student radio to speak of.
People just aren't getting to know what is going on.
So I ask again what gigs have you been to what effort have you put into getting off ya bum and getting out there?
And who is that you want to see?
