Aussie rock legend found dead
By Nui Te Koa and Kathy McCabe
March 28, 2005

LEGENDARY Crowded House drummer Paul Hester was found dead yesterday in a public park.
Hester, 46, the father of two young girls, failed to return from walking his two dogs, Stan and Rose, on Saturday night.

Police later found his body in Elsternwick park near his Melbourne home. They said there were no suspicious circumstances and friends said they had been unaware of Hester having been depressed.

Last night, former Crowded House members, singer Neil Finn and bassist Nick Seymour, said they were reeling from the tragedy.

"I am devastated," Finn told The Daily Telegraph from London. "I have lost one of my best mates."

Damn! Thats fucking sad. Depression is an insidious beast...

That it is mate, that it is

That's such a fucking shame

that pretty sad that he could take his own life like that

"here we are together
in a very close embrace
being together
just us alone

Rangi the sky-father is above
the earth mother is below
our love for one another
is everlasting."

RIP Paul.

Paul Hester streaked on stage during a gig in North America
He walked on naked while Neil was singing a solo spot at the piano!

What a guy, aye!
May he always be remembered for the funloving attitude that he brought to Crowded House.

He was a man with a huge sense of humour and a lot of talent.
I urge everybody if they haven't already done so to check out Crowded House's last album, "Together Alone."

So its not paul crowther who died of a sudden death

//Split Enz had already gone through a few drummers when Paul Crowther won the audition in 1974.

He was an earlier drummer, born in Dunedin

A fine chap... It was he that put the zest back into the Enz when they were stagnating back late 83, and in general, he was a laugh and a half... (ever see him playing the fool in the later Split Enz videos and the Crowded house ones) ...a real showman...

To quote the American guy who wrote a fan letter to Crowded House in 1986, which was subsequently photographed and used in an article in RTR Countdown magazine about Crowded House's American success, "PAUL IS RAD!!"

The first I heard about it was when TV3 played a few Crowded House videos and during 'Something So Strong" his name and 1959-2005 came up. Anyone who's seen the video will understand why I thought it was a little bit weird/dark/ironic/insensitive. Although I guess a lot of people would want to be remembered as a happy musician in a barn chilling out with some American stereotypes... I would anyway.

Former Crowded House bass player Nick Seymour flew from Dublin to perform with Neil and Tim Finn in London last night in honour of drummer Paul Hester...

A lone snare drum with a hat on top paid poignant tribute to the 46-year-old Melburnian who died in an Elsternwick park over the Easter holiday.

The musicians shared several memories about Hester and Neil Finn told the audience that Hester was the best drummer he had ever played with.

Seymour then returned to the stage for an emotional encore.

Neil Finn was reported to have broken down in tears during the Hunters and Collectors classic Throw Your Arms Around Me.

Neil and Tim Finn have cancelled Tuesday and Wednesday's concerts to fly to Melbourne.
A private funeral is expected to take place for Paul Hester on Friday.

Jimi -

I didn't see the three bulletin, I was watching one, but the reason they picked "Something So Strong" is because that's a very "Paul-esque" vid, the CH video that best encapsulates Paul's sense of fun - that and "Don't Dream," the vid headliners picked, which has him ironing! They weren't being insensitive. The channels both made a point of focussing on Paul's simple joy, infectious energy, and big heart. Yes, as Ed Rayner said last night, Paul had a black side, that was a part of his personality - but that's not what he was all about, and I'm sure at a time like this those who knew him would rather dwell on the good times he enjoyed.

As for the American stereotypes in "Strong," that would've been very much up to Capitol at the time. The band were living in LA, they were signed to a major label, and their success depended on them maintaining the image they'd been assigned to (American radio then and now is obsessed with cramming bands into marked cubbyholes.) They were under immense personal pressure by the powers-that-be to maintain that image. The few good men that backed the band at Capitol knew they were taking a huge gamble on a bunch on unknown antipodeons - if CH went down, then they were going down with them. The band's commercial success was vital. It wasn't until after their first release, once they'd proven themselves, that they were able to take more risks, step out on their own, and assert a certain amount of creative control.

The wonderful thing about the people in that band is how little they changed during their time together. From the beginning, they were never an image obsessed band - they were too honest to be cool. And they weren't above looking a bit silly. What they're doing in the "Something So Strong" video might be artificial, but it's no more artificial than what hundreds of indie image-conscious bands are attempting to create. Their sincerity shines through. Crowded House's music was about simple, unaffected joy - even their darkest music soars.

Hey malibustacey - thanks for your post. I agree wholeheartedly with pretty much everything you said. Just poking a bit of half-hearted fun at this very tragic moment. No disrespect was intended!

I just thought to those not so familiar with the CH attitude/history/personality it might seem a little strange for a video obituary to contain something so overtly joyous.

I remember when Neil was on Hessie's Shed with Nick Seymour... reunited on stage again and Paul was telling the story about getting up on stage naked at a Christmas show I think.. and whacking his penis onto the mic asking the crowd to guess the sound... "thud"

RIP Hessie

That's cool Jimi! He he, even though you can't tell from my last post, I do have a sense of humour, and I know what you meant by your comments. I wasn't offended at all :-) I guess I was just trying to clarify what I feel the essence of Crowded House is, if that makes sense. I just love their music so much, I want everyone to understand how good they were, and I do get a bit ranty sometimes. It's just me; I've been kinda defensive ever since an unfortunate altercation with a radio active DJ over their honour....
don't worry though, there was more of his blood on the floor than mine ;-)

Heh good to hear - if you're interested, my conversation with you spurred me to listen to Recurring Dream twice through. Good music eh wot.

he was also the cook for the wiggles

In honour of this, I plan on having a commemorative meal of hot potato, mashed banana and cold spaghetti.
