Saw it last night, and I think he struck a chord, with the drivers licenses that asian community hold, with all racism aside, the question must now be asked how many Asian drivers actaully legally passed their tests?, but also how many other people who passed them also and who went down the same avenues as the girl did on Johns show last night,
the fact that it has been said alot of the Asian drivers havnet actually passed their practical test does explain alot when it comes to their driving ability.
but now John is faced with the problem of where to go next, he started off and set his standard pretty high for his first show, lets hope he can keep it up,
Side note- What did Holmes and "Close Up" have on their shows last night????

"must now be asked"? The Listener did an article on that like months ago!
Also, that only applies for the first 12 months that a new person is in the country, while they're on an international license, doesn't it? After that they have to sit a full test.

It was pretty clear that apart from a few gratuitous excerpts by John, in was a 60 Minutes story, and as a result, was pretty much a pile of crap. The rather more promising aspects of the show were the prospect of John doing a bookclub, and a bit of light satire. On wednesday, he's interviewing Rove. Ironically, after the Listener's recent story on Rove bemoaning NZ's lack of talent..... if Campbell Live forgets the stupid 60 Minutes tabloid journalism, Campbell could be our Rove, with perhaps some more interviewing depth....

i think that question needs to be asked too, on that "police 10 7" and "highway patrol" i have seen numerous people picked up for have a overseas license that has expired and yet they are still driving around illegally,

NO you wouldnt you would still ask, how many asian drivers actaully passed their tests??
its not racist if you have info stateing that their are asian drivers out there who have not sat test, you are simply asking how many of them have actaully done it legally,
how many african americans are in gangs in the USA? thats not racist its common knowledge that a shit load of them are you are simply trying to find out how many approximately, wheres the racism in that ???

dan, one form of racism is tarnishing an entire group with a generalised statement that only applies to a very small minority of that group, and which thus causes that group as a whole to come under negative scrutiny.
Which is exactly what you've done here. Undoubtedly there are some Asian drivers in NZ without licenses. There are probably also a lot of pakeha, maori and polynesian people driving around without valid licenses. Why pick on the Asians?

the only reason im getting " riled up about asians" is because they are the ones paying for these licenses, takingn an easy option, a person cant sign an illegal license off if there is no demand for it, itd be a waste of time,
did you ever think of it like that ???
and yes i am aware that people other than the testers can sign licenses off, which i didnt think did or would happen but apparently does, so theres the first problem
// they are the ones paying for these ...
// they are the ones paying for these licenses
Either that, or the civic-minded one who tipped people off to the problem was chinese, and in fact it's all the other ethnicities who didn't contact TV3 that are the real culprits...

Really? You think so? I didn't get the impression that the LTSA guy was at all concerned. He knew he was never going to outsmart those cheeky...
Oh wait. Maybe you should look at the front page of the paper, or instead of dissing asians, have a sift round on the internet.
Unbelievable. Rather than targeting middle-aged white drivers in nice cars with speeding tickets, the police are investigating. Apparently the LTSA have known about the scam for around 3 weeks, and have just about finished their internal audit.

Most asians can speak some english Dan, even newer immigrants. Just not very well. I'd like to hear you speak French after a few years.
Face it Dan you have a problem with Asians, it's obviouse because you don't limit your generalisations to their driving. If you want to make 'good' character judgements on a race (presumably the mogoloid race is what you mean) , like being intellligent, then that opens the door to bad ones aswell. Are african americans stupid because they are lower achievers, is the black race less intelligent? Or could it be cultural, and the fact that asians able to come here are likely to be wealthy and maybe smarter anyway. Wealthier and smarter than your average nzder.....

//im talking 10+ years
Assuming they didn't start learning English until after they turned 7, they're never going to acheive true fluency. I'd imagine that their written english is probably fine -- it's much easier to communicate in another language when you have time to consider what you're going to write. And unless you're comfortable with your performance, it's much easier to avoid speaking second languages in public. I know that I never do if I can humanly get away with it, which of course has also increased my rate of forgetting because I won't.
I'm sure dantheman realises that in ...
I'm sure dantheman realises that in order to immigrate/study in new zealand these asians must sit and pass the IELTS exam, which requires better english than dan owns. So it's highly likely, like you said limegreen, that reason these asians aren't speaking the english to him is because he's a bigot.

Heh. I've been putting off going for my motorbike restricted for the last few weeks. It's a bit of a fair weather enterprise for me, and I suspect the closer it gets to winter, the more likely I am to put it off for longer.
You simultaneously feel very alive and in touch with your surroundings on a motorbike, but at the same time, are aware of your fragility far more (or what your surroundings could do to you if you become *too* aware of them). Odd thing is, I'm happy to go faster downhill on my mountain bike than I am on the motorized job. I never fell off when I was learning to ride a pushbike either...

// hey i was in the 1st 15, and i didnt ...
// hey i was in the 1st 15, and i didnt walk around like i owned anything
Dan. Remember this? It's not about being PC, but about the fact that unsubstantiated generalisations diss everybody else in those categories. So in the same way that plenty of first fifteen members, perhaps the majority, don't walk round the school like they own it, doesn't mean they all do. In the same way, of the few hundred thousand "asians" that are here, the vast majority of them are probably good drivers. However, like first fifteen members, they are visually distinctive (well at least at some schools 1st XV get special ties and blazers and jerseys), making it easy to make the generalisation.
Now you've argued a couple of times that asians are bad drivers, regardless of where they may (or may not) have got their licences, and that this isn't racist, because it's based on fact.
So, while I have a shitload of other work I should be doing tonight, I thought I'd have search for some facts, and peruse some statistics. Well, you'd think if asians were bad drivers, they'd be over-represented in crash statistics, and mentioned frequently on LTSA. It seems that there may be some evidence for "asians" as a group to get injured in the Mackenzie country, but also female under 24 tourists are at risk there. The stats are not very sophisticated (don't control for other risk factors such as age), but there is no good evidence I can see that there is any basis for your claim. So it's not fact, so it's at best an stereotype not based on fact, and at worst, racism.
i would've thought it would be young ...
i would've thought it would be young white males with skanks in the car that are the worst drivers...becuase they think they're good drivers, esp when they drive fast...cause it really impresses Tracy in the passenger seat.
and although i don't want to trawl through all the vile racist crap that you wrote dan....what you siad was horribly racist

////Why pick on the Asians?
didnt you watch Campbell live last night????
if you had you wouldnt be asking that question,
thats the only reason i am saying how many other asian drivers dont have legal licenses, purely from what I saw last night, there probly are alot of other people who arent asian with expired licenses or illegally aquired ones but they were not the one in the spotlight last night, and the asians were,
so do you think that John campbells entire article last night on this was racist?????
because it was aimed at the people who probly have the worst driving records in the country, and whos race is synonomous with bad driving, in my area anyway
