Forums: NZ Music,

man, that chorus of "individual" is american accent to the extreme.

Impressed at how prolific you guys are, 2 eps only one year out of school. However, you gotta watch those accents man, you make 48may and goodnight nurse look like barry crump by comparison. Unless of course your vocalist is american and then its all good.

not trying to be a bitch, just a bit of practical advice.

Cheers man,
I'm the singer and no I'm not american. I kinda just do what comes naturally from listening to so much american music. But yeah, im not a big fan of the nz pop punk californian accent thing, I didn't really realise it was that extreme. I'm also not very big fan of pop punk music, although a few of the tracks on our new ep reak of it. I like to think we're a little more quirky than that though. but yeah, i don't want to ham up an accent or anything, just do what sounds good to me so i'll keep an eye on it

cool man. Before you record, just sit down and read the lyrics to yourself normally, then sing them and note the words you sing differently. It is very hard, the few times I've sung live I've used a heavy american accent, but when you record, you have to be more careful.

Ian i think you should get fucked and leave the kids alone!

//It is very hard, the few times I've sung live I've used a heavy american accent, but when you record, you have to be more careful.

I think that is the worst advice i have EVER heard EVER!

Dude i would say everyone has to make mistakes and usually thats what makes people grow and having someone in their late twenties who is a jaded industry dude giving singing advice is totally not going to help anyone but fuel some dickheads Ego. Seriously LEAVE THE KIDS ALONE!

Congratulations for releasing yr second EP the hendersons. Thats totally amazing.

hah..bro. whats up, man, I was just giving some constructive crit. yes, people should learn these things as they go along..umm..he just learnt, cause I told him.

I wasn't slamming anything they did, just pointing out a good technique to help tone down american accents in singing.

andoru, whats got up your ass? are we starting this whole bitching at each other on the forums type shenanigans again? relax...though I miss our fights.

Man, its so hip to call me jaded. If i'm jaded, ie: tired and worn out... god, I'd hate to see what someone with energy was doing. Or am i "jaded" because I'm cynical?

Maybe the kid could sing in German? no, how about Swahili? an Aussie accent? American's fine kid.

so andrew msn's me, telling me he's fucking with me. good times. haha.

//Maybe the kid could sing in German? no, how about Swahili? an Aussie accent? American's fine kid.

aw man. I so didn't mean to begin a accent debate here. Its already happened here so many times already. I really don't care, bands can sing however they like. I just find it odd listening to a NZ cd (and i get sent heaps) and it sounds like an american singing.

Upon listening to the mp3s, this was what struck me, hence the advice, they can take it anyway they like. If The Henderson Exp are happy with the accent thing then that is cool, if they are not, I was simply pointing it out... they can decide what they want to do about it.

I know some bands when recording have made a distinct effort to de-americanize their vocals. Eg, Paselode in C'mon Halleluyah, stopped saying hElleluyah and now say "chance" with an "a" like aunt not like ant... and it makes a difference.

I think that trying to be an american band when you're a new zealand band can make u seem kinda stupid, although my band might be guilty of this sometimes. But we pronounce 'individual' as 'individ-you-al' just for the way it sits with the music rather than trying to sound american

cool man, but its more the "en-dev" rather then "in-div" as well. just say it to yourself normally then listen to how you sing it. There are other words as well, just do that thing i suggested where you just read the lyrics over to yourself and then listen to the performance and watch for anything that sounds wierd, of course shit changes when you sing it, just keep an eye on it... ya know..

As near I can read the phoenetic differences between the two pronounciations, the key is a slight shift in emphasis, and because of that, we're more likely to sound the "d" than in NAm.
So, in-di-VID-jew-al vs. in-di-vi-JEW-al

haha..aw man, this is getting a bit mad, breaking down words and shit. forget i ever said anything. haha

Leave Ian alone.
Hes still a kid also you know..

..He was just giving his constructive opinion..

in many ways saying what he dislikes about the band is better than lieing and saying everything is brilliant when its not,

..he didnt say stupid stuff like "your crap" so whats the problem.

...ive seen these guys a couple of times and there very tight. while im not a big fan of the style of music there making they do seem to be quite good at it.

I appresiate all of your input cheers. Ian, your critisism was constructive, that's what I was kinda hoping of getting.

If any bands that read this would like a listen to the EP we'd love to send you a free copy. Just chuck me your details through email and we'll send one over, you know how it is, networking and all. Email uprightbass@gmail.com
