Paul McLaney is one of the most talented singer / songwriter / guitarists I have ever had the pleasure of working with. I am very proud to count him as one of my friends. He was one of the first people I met on coming to New Zealand from England in 1991. He was only 17 at the time, but like all great aspiring performers he had a vision and sensibility beyond his age. He has worked hard to get where he is, (three self written / produced albums in less than 5 years in NZ! is no mean feat), but the exciting thing is, the story has only just begun. Gramsci should be world famous, but I know just being brilliant isnt enough. Paul Mclaney is precious. A star looking for a universe in which to shine. The fact that he hasn't departed for foreign shores to persue his dream is all credit to his belief in NZ music. Support him, for he trusts in you.
Paul McLaney is the type of talent you only stumble across a few times in your life. Any that have been touched by Jeff Buckley will know what I mean. I have had the privilege of performing and working with Paul so I have felt this magic first hand. I say felt because his music is not just to be heard but rather to be immersed in. You will only know the exactly what I'm talking about if you see him live. Those of you who remember his solo Temple days will know exactly what I'm talking about. Power is probably the best word to describe those performances. You owe it to yourself to get to know his music. You will never turn back from it.
What kind of dumb ass comment is "Paul McLaney is very talented. Why is he living in New Zealand?" This is exactly the sort of bullshit 'brain drain' crap that I, personally, am heartily sick of. Gramsci is great - and so are many of our musicians, so ably represented in part by thie website. Let's hope that a site like nzmusic.com helps our local talent get a global audience in order for them to become global. Stop the small pond thinking erwinmunsky - it's not us and them - our great local culture is already part of the global psyche.
When I was young, the sound of my own heart beat, while I fell into sleep, was a comfort. As I drifted into a deeper sense, the regular rythmic pattern got louder and some how more sinister. I'm sure I heard footsteps, but however hard I tried, I never saw the face of the person walking my way in the dark. "Complicated" moves me in the same way. It is a lullaby for insomniac's. A nursery rhyme for those of us afraid of the dark. It walks on the edge of light and dark, sparkles with the morning sun's first light. But our shadows fall in shade, so we see no shape of how we are. The simplest of things are always complicated. Paul McLaney can mix a sun kissed beach, and the depths of a persons despair in equal amounts. He has 'the force'. You feel it, even though sometimes, you may not even know he's there. Un-assuming, sneek up on you, brilliance!!
I havent fully listened to the album yet, but we got it into work the other day, and it really caught my attention. I only found out it was NZ music today. Im really Really Impressed, and this is me not having fully listened to the album. My Fav song so far is 'let it go'
erwinmursky - although it is beyond my control, i would prefer you shut your trap. Also, i hear you Americans are big on plastic surgery. Why dont you get some headsize reduction done.
I bough Permanence about 3 weeks ago and am still wowed by it. Paul McLaney writes songs that make you want to sit down, block out the rest of the world and listen closely. Like all good albums Permanence surprises you with new favourite songs on each listen. I bought it for "Easy", fell in love with "Complicated" and now "Give Me Strength" is the top of my personal charts. Very good stuff indeed.
And there's a shout out to NZM in the credits. The man is obviously a genius.
same here, i got it when it was released(some time 2000 maybe...?) and i still love it, its great to find an album of songs you can listen throuhg non stop and not get sick of
I hope people are aware there is a new album due out soon, called Object. I heard a track off it last night - Beautiful Life (the video for this is finished and will be on this site at some stage I'm sure. Its quite a change in sound, from the acoustic folky music on Permanence - he brings in (rather effectively) drum and electronica for this track. The themes are not very different - oon this song, he has some chick but is unwilling to take her away from what he imagines to be her beautiful life. Or, at least, that's what my one listen so far makes me think - I'll try again tonight.
Wow - I just saw 'Don't' on Juice. Very, very cool video. The best thing was that I really felt it suited the lyrical sentiments/vibe of the music. Anyone know who made it?
Paul McLaney will be doing his solo thing at Happy (cnr of tory and vivian streets) this Thursday Night with Samuel Flynn Scott (thats ME!) in support..
Paul has just recorded what i can assure,if you have not heard it , is an amazing album of very beautiful songs that should translate well to the intmate surrounds of Happy
Hmm. Well,I had never heard of Gramsci. All I knew was that my brother Hamish was always talking about his friend Paul - been friends for a while. The other night, I went to pick Hamish up from Paul's house, and Hamish told me he was in a band (Paul), and there was a CD out soon, so I asked to hear some. Really, really beautiful, I have to say. And also a really, very genuinely nice, mannered, and intelligent guy. Lovely jubbly! I jokingly told him that I'd do for him what I've been doing for Breaks Co-op, and I will too. Wonderful stuff - I think the album is out in a couple of months. Buy it, and make this man the star he deserves to be........
But what happens if his album turns out better than The Sound Inside? If the third album progresses from the second as much as it did from the first (I see I was talking about this up the thread a bit), it will be a fabulous CD. Hopefully he will tour it too, its been a while since I saw him perform.
Well, mysh, isn't that great for both of them that they produce wonderful music? I know that they admire each other greatly, so no harm, no foul, I reckon!
20th of June and come and gone, like other Like Stray Voltage release dates...does anyone know when this is actually going to come out? I desperately need/want it.
No worries found it now! Amazing album so far, I'm really loving the rocky sound with Paul's voice...now all he has to do is come back down to Dunedin (we miss you!) and play, and I'll be duly satisfied. I love the cover too.
That's good to hear, only ever seen him supporting Anika Moa in Christchurch with the symphony orchestra...they did Don't together with them, AMAZING. When he opened, he did mostly songs off the Shadows-etc. acoustic being December 2003 before its release in 2004. Can't wait to hear this new album live. :D
Have been lately...I really want people to know about Gramsci because the music is so amazing. :) And I know personally of only one other Gramsci fan...is it wrong I want to chat about it?
Just to let all Gramsci and Paul fans know that they will be doing a residency at the Galatos Basement some time very soon. (Once a week, Paul said the other night). Go see, I intend to. What a lovely, lovely man. Seriously.
