what makes you think there aren't many talented females playing instruments? do you not go outside?
i don't undertstand what naming bass players will prove. How will it prove who is top? will you go and see these bands simply because they have a female bass player? why does it matter the sexual orientation of the bass player?
If you want to see female bass players nail it, you could start by checking out....umm.....the Rock'n'roll machine, the coolies, ghostplane, Charlie Ash, Lady Luck, Gestalt Switch, Cherry's Gemstones, Daisy Chain halo, Velveteen, elemenop, ghostclub, Gramsci, Voom, The Carnys, Pro Drag, Goon, Looma, The Terminals and a hell of alot more....there are fuckloads of female bass players in bands that aren't currently playing..but that list is ridiculously long.

yes, but judging a good bass player..is pretty much, can they keep locked in with the drummer and give the band a solid groove. They don't need to slap the shit out of their instrument to be considered a great player. My fav bass player would be Elise from Looma, I have no idea if she could battle Les Claypool in a bass battle, but i like voomas songs and they sound tight, she has nice tone, so um..i guess she is "top".

My response to that would be, it doesn't matter, Im just curious to see what people say, and it's also nice that these girls get some recognition for a job well done. Don't you think?

Yes! Let's congratulate those bass playerettes on a job well done! Sometimes they have trouble playing the big bass guitar cos they've got teeny tiny li'l girl hands, but when they can streeeeetch their fingers and play the big boy guitars, well, good on them!!! Yay for lady bass players! Almost as good as men!

well, a) you seem to think their aren't many women playing in good bands around, hence your "do i have you stumped?" b) would you start a forum called "top 10 male bass players"? ..no. c) if you had a forum called "top 10 bass players", you would probably find many women on that list. d) you seem suprised that the bass players of ALL the bands I named are good. Is this because they are women? You don't think their can be that many talented women players around?
And, yes they are all very talented...and there are many more out there.

Once I saw the WBC play when their regular bass player was off with an injured hand. In his place was a female bassist. I can't remember her name, but if I remember correctly, she normally plays in a kind of jazzy group. Anyway, she was really good and did all the complicated funky bits that are the backbone of many of the WBC's songs.

yeah, you'd be hard pressed to find a better female bass player than vanessa, in fact, you'd be hard pressed to find a better player full stop. jazz trained but seems to prefer lockin in a groove to jerkin off, shes playing in the AK05 festival club band at the Civic Sunday through Wednesday for the next 2 weeks. Definately woth checkin. Styles: Jazz and Dub.
