Was Helen Clark correct to veto John "The Voice" Farnham?

Forums: NZ Music,

Come on now, John Farnham should be banned from playing anywhere!!!!

One Aussie guy wrote to the Herald saying that if Helen could prevent John Farnham from playing anywhere, he'd support the All Blacks.

If Helen could prevent the All Blacks from playing anywhere, I'd support John Farnham.

Traitor

wtf is john farnham?

Not sure I agree with either option. Wrong in stopping some kind of music other than the bugle. Shouldn't be a rock concert but something would have fit the bill. Farnham appealing to younger people?, yes if younger is a number of Australians younger than those alive in 1915 no to the youth market.
On reflection yes she was but only cause it was NZs turn to put on a show. No objections to Finn brothers, Dame Kiri etc performing a well chosen piece.

Been thinking bout Tennyson and the charge of the light brigade. Seems to me in honour of those who died for king and country unquestioningly but also brings into question that "someone blundered", a seriously expensive mistake by an inept officer (from memory Lord Lucan's great grandfather?). Not too dissimilar fromGalipoli in that respect. Taken by some as a dramatic monologue glorifying war in the past I think its been misread.
At foremost in my mind how do you keep the honouring the dead thing without glorifying war or pointing out majority of wars are shit causes (ww2 being biggest major exception). Hard task but I don't think a solemn occasion stuck in Edwardian ways is in accord either

//stopping some kind of music

You've got completely the wrong idea. They're not banning music. They put the kibosh on the idea that an "entertainer" is required to "entertain" the people attending the services. It's the correct thing to do.

And another thing: anyone who thinks that "young people" need extra stuff to make Anzac day more "relevant" needs a kick in the head.

History is a dying subject in schools Foaf, not least of all cause it is very dry and far removed from modern life in the way it is presented. With History as one string in my bow this saddens me, not least of all as it allows hollywood to refabricate history any way it chooses largely unopposed (after all perception is, on the surface, reality to most people) and it leads to a less humanistic world which is less capable of avoiding the fuckups of the past.

One historian, a man called Hayden White referred to history as a form of social necrophilia, something requiring little more than a well padded arse and a talent for a couple of languages. personally I think if younger people were confronted with 'a story'- the story of young people like themselves, who went off for this great adventure only to find themselves in hell, whether that be through reenactment, music, whatever... maybe they would just get it a little more.

History is going the way of the dodo and latin. Do your bloody homework on that and get back to me with it is a bad idea to try to get young people interested, failing that go and talk to young people asking them historical questions. You will be astounded by how little they know.

Here, here or should I say something alittle more modern in my aproval of what you've just written, maybe ..... ahhh can't think of anything now to say without sounding like an ageing bloke trying to sound trendy, so I'll skip it .. I think all to many ( but not all ) young people, by that I mean Kiwi, Aussie, American, British kids and young adults are just too wrapped up in the luxury of a here and now world and give little regard to anything that went before .. not only on the war front but in the fields of exploration and discovery, science, religion, literature and many more things people have done in history to get us to where we are now. I don't necessarily blame them, I blame it on the education system and consecutive governments dumbing things down .. but that's a whole new thing and not a topic for NZmusic ..!

Oh Jesus, Simon. I am talking specifically about Anzac day. You know, the day that commemmorates the lives and actions of the Azac troops in various wars throughout the last hundred years. The same commemmorations that are growing more and more popular with younger generations every year. Attendance is up all around the country.

The kids (and people of my generation) might not know as much about history as you, but more and more they're showing they thing it's "relevant" to them by to going along to a dawn services every year. There's no need to spice up Anzac day with extra entertainment.

*ditto*

why rely on schools? everything that has stuck in my brain i sought out and learned for myself....i haven't missed a ANZAC dawn service since i was 12 (25 now).

there would be holy hell raised if they tried to "spice up" anything at ANZAC cove.

On the bus yesterday afternoon, some teenage girls were discussing the holidays...

"So, when is that war holiday one?"
"Waitangi Day?"
"No, you know, the one about the poppies"
"Ohhh, Anzac Day!"
"That's the one. When is it?"
"March, isn't it?"
"Is it?
"I don't know."

Jeeesus.

An isolated incident, I'm sure.

Well shit, maybe I need a kick in the head. Somebody call P-Money quick! It's time for HipHopStory class!

//An isolated incident, I'm sure.

ha ha you wish,

most don't even know what D-day is about let alone what happened some twenty five odd years beforehand (there some british survey a while back -which came up in a topic here- and out of everyone surveyed only one kid got it right 100%, some thought it was in veitnam, some during the Nepoleonic wars, some even thought it was staged in NZ, most only knew about it from Saving Private Ryan)

I can understand what people are saying on this one and guess it really is two issues, though issues I see being tied up in this case.
Has given me an idea.
Will start another thread.

...

//"So, when is that war holiday one?"

comes to show that no wonder the education system in NZ is failing - either that or those girls where thick as a milkshake

where's the who gives a fuck option?

binary.

"Keeping the day relevant for a younger generation?" With John Farnham?

Hehe.

I guess the younger generation they're referring to is the baby-boomers.

All I can say is - Farnsie, fuck off.

And take Barnsie with you.

//And take Barnsie with you.

Keep Jimbo out of this!

Helen Clark is a mindless idiot. Im quite sure that if WWI was today then Jon Farnham would have gone to the battlefields and performed for Australian and NZ troops - Much in the way Bob Hart did for US troops in Vietnam - Clarks behavior is totally inappropriate.

...and I'm sure if World War I were today, Helen Clark would encourage such a morale-boosting offering. I think there's a little difference between lifting the spirits using '80s rock anthems, and regaling the dead with them.

Not that I'm particularly fussed one way or the other; just your analogy doesn't hold.

There's a difference between keeping the troops morale up on the battlefield and having music at a remembrance service. Thus, you're bob hart analogy is crap. A better one would be having Billy Ray Cyrus playing at a Vietnam memorial service now. Mmmmm tasteful.

whiplash. Gutting.

(dancing)

to Billy Ray. Shame, shame on you.

(yes, so I do actually know why you're dancing)

// Much in the way Bob Hart did for US troops in Vietnam

And don't forget the playboy bunnies. Not that we have any. We could, I suppose, send the Santa Fe pole-dancing team.

//We could, I suppose, send the Santa Fe pole-dancing team.

poor old RSA fellas who survived the dangers of war, brought to their end by boobs & dodgy tickers

Bob Hope?
Who is Bob Hart?

The reason the the austrailian government firts ask jonny to play at Anzac cove was in thanks for his concerts for the troops in ........ ahh piss I can't remember............. East Timor(?)

tadpole played in timor i think once. they should do the anzac service.

Te radar and mike king played in timor i think once. they should do the anzac service.

//jonny.......... East Timor
//tadpole played in timor
//Te radar and mike king played in timor

Fucking hell don't those poor bastards have enough to deal with???

probably confusing bob (new)hart with bob hope.

Bob Newhart sure new how to name his TV Shows.
First one was "Newhart", second one was "Bob".
Clearly this man was worth the many millions he was undoubtably paid.
Who was the Dad in 8 is enough?

he'd have been in trouble if he'd ever had to do a third show, wouldn't he?

// Who was the Dad in 8 is enough?

God I hated that show. Dick Van Patten.

Dick van Patten?
A Whale Tattoo?
Thanks, it was troubling me.

//Dick van Patten?

Real name: Penis van Design

On the news Helen seemed to come across as if it was gonna be a motorhead gig... she has no idea who he is anyhow... it was like she heard "ROCK CONCERT" and freaked... maybe she thought it would entail stage diving into replica fox-holes and "the vetrens" would actually be people who attended the B.D.O in 1994?

.... J. Farnham is getting quite old and would be doing a chill acoustic set... she'd probably quite like him... hmmm ...
she seemed to think that another year of solom speeches and bag-pipes would be just the perfect thing to put on, times have changed and I dont think some acoustic soundz from an old bugger would hurt.... hes a mid aged act, not a young persons and feel a new direction would help in keeping an old tradition of rememberance relevent and fresh in the minds of a fast food, short attention span generation(s)...

BUT WHAt DO I KNOW ..... I AM JUST A MAN.

she seemed to think that another year of solom speeches and bag-pipes would be just the perfect thing to put on

But Farnham himself would supply the bagpipes. Haven't you heard the bagpipe bridge in "You're the Voice?"

"OOOOH, we're all someone's daughter, we're all someone's SOOOOON...."
bit of gender confusion there, eh Johnny?

Hmmm. You seem to know much about John Farnham. A little TOO much if you ask me!

I scare myself sometimes.

I know the truth. You're really a forty seven year old woman posing as a young hip Lisa Simpson fan. So far you've been very convincing. Until one little slip-up. Quoting John Farnham lyrics. You're busted, lady!

TAPEMAN SHOULD PLAY THE SERVICE... IT WOULD CERTAINLY BE MEMORABLE.. HA

yes!

no she wasnt
