Jonah the comeback kid- should he of shoundt he?

i personally think its pretty fucken awesome that jonah is trying to come back, i think coming back from what he had takes a shitload of heart and guts and determination to get back to where he is now

but do you think he should comeback?
not do you think he can comeback

but with a condition like his do you think he SHOULD comeback?
i mean all it takes is a split second and a hard shot to his kidney area and hes a goner pretty much, and when he does comeback will he be such force? or will he even be able to keep up with the pace rugby is palyed at now?

i admire his dertemination, and heart and his love for rugby and he is lover him or hate him a great of the rugby union sport,

but i cant help but think he may be making the wrong decision in comming back espcially to the likes of Super 12 and NPC and international rugby,
but hey Lance armstrong came back from testicular cancer right? i guess stranger things have happened.

your thoughts

Forums: The Bar,

Good on him if he can, but i think he should be looking a being able to finish a game or two of club rugby before he looks any further. i think his playing days are gone - i kinda think he should let the next generation come through, he could probably do a lot more for the game too of the paddock.

What an absolute legend though when you consider what he was able to acheive while being that ill.

yeah thats the thing i dont understnad,

when ritchie mc caw had his headaches he had to come back through club rugby, why doesnt jonah have to do the same thing?

and yes fuck IF he can do it fire away, but thinking about his health thats all i duno if he should do it even if he is able

but hell he could live off endorsements for eveeeeeerrrrrrrr

the odd centenial (spelling?) game should be sweet as but full time im not so sure hell last you know,

i guess time will tell

also i think i want to remember him going hard out on the paddock, just smashing through people, a mate of mine made a 'Jonah highlights' tape - fucking amazing, you tend to forget what a power he was as his last year or so of rugby was so/so
would hate to watch him struggling out there.

but if he can . . . . well he had the determination to play that well as a sick man . . . imagine a healthy Jonah running at you.

(then again, Rokocoko on one wing & Lomu on the other . . . . .fuck!! )

There's a player in the NBA (I forget who though) that has returned from the same thing ... basketball is not as physically demanding as far as body contact goes, but much more aerobically demanding. So why shouldn't Jonah give it a go? I saw a text on Paul Holmes saying he should move on, but you're only young once for goodness sake!

im thinking more along the lines of his health though,

is rugby worth risking your health? and that comming frrmo a guy who has played rugby since i was old enough to walk, it pretty much runs through my veins

//is rugby worth risking your health?

I think the surgeons tucked his new kidney up behind his ribcage or around-about to protect it a bit more so he could play
you kinda risk your health by playing anyway . . . well your bones & joints at the least

Being a pro-rugby player is the third most dangerous occupation in New Zealand, behind forestry and wharfies, but ahead of being a jockey from memory. It's pretty funny that playing rugby is up there with wielding a chainsaw and having large trees falling down round you all the time.

haha yeah but its true, i almost broke my neck a couple of years ago i ending up only straining some tendons in my neck, but not being able to feel ur legs for a few seconds is still pretty scary

up in his rib cage you say??
ah shouldnt be too bad then hes only gota worry about breaking a rib then haha but generally people dont get that close to jonah to be able to do that sort of damage

yeah I know a guy who was only 15 years old when he ended up under a nasty ruck and is now in a wheel chair for the rest of his life.

Dangerous Occupations - I thought Farming was the worst (or at least had the highest fatality rate)?

apparently rugby is more dangerous or is right up there with like formula 1 and motor car racing and shit which is pretty fucken crazy considering one invovles cars flying around a race track, the other just invovles people smashing into each other,

but this jonah thing as much as i admire him and what hes done for NZ rugby im not sure he should come back

heres another question

do you think hell be wary and tentative of where his new kidney is ?? eg if you brake ur leg playing rugby or watever the next time you go back on the field youll be wary of ur leg right ?maybe not consciously but somewhere in the back of ur mind youll be thinking about it,

coz generally i have found in rugby if you dont go full on thats when you get injured, especailly when comming back frrom a signifcant injury,

look at justin marshell- he hasnt been the same since he tore his achellies, nowhere near as fast as he was,

same thing could happen with jonah

// Dangerous Occupations - I thought Farming was the worst (or at least had the highest fatality rate)?

there's an enormous number of ways to operationalise "dangerous". I was going on ACC earner premiums, which is the cost of treatment + supporting people who are temp/permanently out of the workforce.

// do you think hell be wary and tentative of where his new kidney is?

no. are you wary of your liver when you play rugby? or your gall bladder?

as stated above, it's tucked away inside his ribcage at the back, one of the places in the human body that's pretty well protected, even in rugby.

///no. are you wary of your liver when you play rugby? or your gall bladder?

if id just had a new one put in i probly would
but yeah rib cage is pretty rugged and tough

I'm sure it'll be well down the list of things he's worried about. I assume Jonah is of the same sort of stock as other all blacks like richie mccaw, leon mcdonald, justin marhsall, jerry collins, tana umaga et. al. - all of whom have suffered far greater directly-related-to-rugby-related injuries, and come back strongly.

but yes, flat out pace and endurance might be an issue - I'm pretty sure his strength won't be.

//Dangerous Occupations

yeah i was kinda just thinking out loud . . . . . . . (while typing, err . . . thats quite scary?!?)

//but do you think he should comeback?
not do you think he can comeback

enough, fuck off.

^^^ if you dont have anything constructive to say then fuck off

Stick him in the cricket team

There are two NBA players who have come back and played after receiving a kidney transplant. The first was Sean Elliot of the San Antonio Spurs, and the second was Alonzo Mourning formerly of the Charlotte Hornets and Miami Heat and now playing for (I think) New Jersey. Both of their cases have been analysed pretty heavily (you know what the Americans are like with sports) and the only real risk is of damage to the kidney through contact. If Jonah thinks it is safe enough where it is (and knowing the rigours of professional rugby, of which I am sure he is aware), he should be free to play. He can always hit Grant Kereama up for the other one.

Sean Elliot was my first ever basketball card..... *wistful*

doesnt really concern me - i dont follow rugby anyway.

haha wicked post!
