twenty/20

i think Ricky ponting put a good spin on this gaame in an interview i saw last night on the news,

basically he said - if you can score big runs in 20 overs itll improve the 50 over games and m ake them higher scoring thus more exciting

but in saying that, is this just crickets answer to the Rugby 7's ???

i dont really know how much 7's has improved Rugby Union, and very rarely will slap dash rugby overcome structure on the field,

dont get me wrong its great to watch and is pretty entertaining but will this 20/twenty version help the 50 over game like Mr Pointing thinks??

// is this just crickets answer to the Rugby 7's

the one day game is cricket's equivalent to sevens.

20-20 is like three-a-side rugby.

(Can't remember who made that analogy - someone in the paper this morning I recall).

Does no one remember the Hong Kong 6's?! That was the cricket equivilant of rugby 7s.

As for twenty/20 - its a gimmick to get more people into cricket, it was very succesful in britain. Apparently lots of women liked it, it's all about money. I don't think it should replace one day games though and I highly doubt it'll have a huge effect on the way one day games are played. One day scores have been going up steadily for years anyway.

At least we'll always have test cricket, how many other games can you watch for 5 days straight?

The ICC is expanding cricket into many countries, its all quite interesting - many european nations play 40 over a side touraments regularly and they have a thing in the states called ProCricket.

//i dont really know how much 7's has improved Rugby Union,

It helped a few of these fellas a bit – Zinzan Brook, Eric Rush, Sir Christian Cullen the almighty, Joe Rokocoko, Glen Osbourne, Mils Muliaina, Rico Gear, Rodney So’oialo, Caleb Ralph oh yeah and some guy called Jonah something

//and very rarely will slap dash rugby overcome structure on the field,

Hey shudd-up, that’s our mighty Hurricanes #1 tactic

//dont get me wrong its great to watch and is pretty entertaining but will this 20/twenty version help the 50 over game like Mr Pointing thinks??

Gimmick yes but It might help in that people like me who can’t stand the normal game (5 days straight of anything would bore me) would go and watch a quick 3 hour game, then might learn to appreciate and enjoy cricket a lot more?

yeah like i said entertainment factor, purists like myself prefer the 5 day test matches i could watch aussie play for hours on end,

haha caleb ralph hahaha you think 7s helped him... really???? and soialo... i dont think anything could help those guys,

it may have helped some individuals but rugby as a whole has it helped? i dont think so

Fiji- great as 7s suck ass at 15s

Australia suck ass at 7s- brilliant at 15s, as we are all aware

Argentina - getting better at 15s and are ok at 7's

if this 20/20 style helps increase totals in the 50 overs game im all for it, but what i think they ned to be careful of is applying too much of the 20/20 stuff to 50 overs cricket and ending up all out in 30 odd over with 200 on the board

im going tonight and im hoping for a great match,

thats Sir So'oialo to you thank you very much.

hahahaha ok i agree with sir christiain cullen, sir tana, sir ma'a "the eyeliner god" nonu, haha but rodney sorry dont agree

If that was 20-20 then it ain't much cop. Just an excuse to slog it round, entertaining I guess, but when it's all big shots the game just loses something in my eyes ...

What I really hate is the fact commentators seem to be paving the way for it to play a much bigger role in international cricket. How often have I been watching a one dayer in the last one and a half years only to hear a commentator explain that "this is the boring part of the innings, not much happens between the 15th and 40th overs" etc?!?! It gets me mad - the only boring thing is the stupid people that continually harp on about this every match! One dayers are going as strong as ever - witness the brilliant 2 games we played against Aussie a few months ago!!!

If 20-20 ever plays a bigger part than tour opener then I'm afraid I don't think I'll be watching.

//when it's all big shots the game just loses something in my eyes

the boredom?

sorry, but you cricket purests are all wanks.

Bah, rubbish! I think the captaincy plays a lots less of a role in shorter matches like this - field placements become as easy as pie and the bowling is simple to work out (although I might have broken Wilsons spell up tonight or bowled Styris for 2 overs). And the bowlers have much less time to find a rythym and develop a decent spell. Overall the skill levels just aren't on display to the same level as a one dayer or test ... and when it comes down to it I want to see top cricket players showing what they can do!

On the other hand, Styris' form was promising - he's been out of the runs for a while, but I'm expecting a lot from him this series. And please Fleming - realise Tuffey isn't a death bowler (I'd try Cairns, Vettori, Astle and if he can bowl like he did against the World team maybe Wilson) and realise that Mills should never play for NZ again!

It's a pity Astle was injured for this game, too, I reckon he would've taken to it like a duck to water ...

i went to eden park tonight. i don't really like cricket that much but heres my report on the game....

the aussies samshed it, nz didn't. i drank lots of beers and laughed at all the people in $100 beige shirts. 3 hrs was long enough on a school night. looked to be about 30,000 ppl there. girls can't catch tennis balls.

In terms of Australia smashing and us not, my big problem with the game, is that it seems that once a team gets on the front foot it is really really hard to come back. That and we really do have some work to do on getting a decent bowling attack.

I'd really like to see how the game develops and whether bowlers can counter the run scoring with new tactics and new kinds of deliveries.

Although Kasparowicz might have the right idea in terms of limiting runs by getting lots of wickets.

^^^^ fuck wasnt he a machine last nite???

and that 6 ruicky pointing hit, that hit the top of ASB stand fucken thing was still going up when it hit, it was a HUGE hit

I loved how the kiwis hammed it up, shame we lost. I don't mind that Kasper played so well, he was right in the spirit of it. Other than that, twenty/20 cricket didnt really win me over. I'm really looking forward to the one dayers.. and not looking forward to being thrashed in the tests, dammit.

NZC didnt once thank the beigebrigade right throughout the entire coverage - that is shit. This article sums it up.

//girls can't catch tennis balls.

Too fucking right there. My favourite was the one that ran forward and then realised the ball was over her head. Then she jumped as the ball hit the ground. Danny Morrison seems to have his sights set on being a porn star. Or atleast some kind of sugar daddy.

But, I drank beer. I had fun.

It's true that Ponting shot that hit the roof must have been a massive hit! I remember Astle doing exactly the same thing (hitting the roof and bouncing back into the field of play) against England at Napier a few years ago ...

Actually it may have been at Carisbrook ...

You ribbed me real good, how embarrassment.

Ah, fair enough.

Ooh let me in on that hot sweaty double team action;

If you ask for people's "views" then you are not allowed to be upset when they express themselves in whatever way, shape or form that their views take.
