Straitjacket Fits Touring Again

This is great news... but might they consider coming to London to play for the ex-pats too?

is it really straitjacket fits without andrew brough?

well, the Fits biggest selling album was recorded without Brough on board, so one might argue...

yes.

It would be great if Brough was there too (and who even cares about album sales?), but I'm pretty damn excited anyway.

// who even cares about album sales?

I'll spell it out for you. A lot of album sales means a lot of people buying the album. Those lots of people all prefer that particular album over other albums. Which suggests they prefer the line up which produced that album.

Well not necessarily.

Blow had a substantially larger marketing budget than Melt and far higher profile overseas considering the deal that they had just signed at the time. Most people purchasing the album probably wouldn't have been aware that there had been a change in line up. Also it would be intersting to see how the sales figures for Melt changed after the release of Blow to a more 'commercial' market.

Personally I like both albums but I think you're logic for rating Blow as the more popular line up is so seriously flawed that you could drive a german battleship through it.

for me, the classic fits line-up is indeed the original melt/hail line-up. even though blow had ts moments, its far to slick, smoothed-over and emotionless (much like dimmer) to compete with the earlier fits albums... let along the double happys or bored games.

I've never been able to appreciate any of the Brough songs that make up the Fits oeuvre. They sound too weak and easy listening for my liking. Perhaps they work well in cleansing the palette to prepare for more Carter menace, but I'm not sad he's not reuniting.

actually, I'm with fraew on this one - the original band is the classic line-up for me. Melt is my favourite NZ album of all time.

And the memory of the harmonies that Brough and Carter sang at the Canty Student Union Hall in my second year is probably the most amazing live experience I can recall.

But v.2 was good too. I don't think anyone should feel short-changed that Broughy won't be showing up.

i actually find Melt too smooth, and prefer Blow. interesting ... Blow seems darker and meaner to me, whereas i find Melt just too goddamned happy or something. but that's only in places - in a perfect world i'd probably take six songs off each album to make my ultimate Fits compilation.

I think the Done EP falls in nicely between Melt and Blow... I love Melt but sometimes feel it lacks balls due to the huge reverbs, and Blow can sometimes feel a bit too plastic for me... The Done EP is really edgy and quite drone rocky...

Having said that all there stuff is great - and still blows me away...

Thanks, I SO need to be patronised by some arse who believes that album sales are the sole indicator of an artist's worth. Perhaps you would also like to point out why Brittney Spears is better than PJ Harvey because, you know, she sold more albums and the public must like her better.

One of the best things about early Fits is the tension between Brough and Carter as songwriters. The higher sales of the last album can be attributed to more marketing and the Fits reputation built on the basis of their earlier material. I find it pretty hard to believe that the reason more people bought the last album is solely because Brough had left.

That those people who bought the album didn'tg o back and buy the better, earlier stuff is disappointing, but not surprising given that the last album was a bit patchy in comparison to the early stuff (although it still had some great songs).

Fair enough.

I'm glad you agree, unsarcastic awesomest guy in NZ.

girl :p

whoops, sorry. your little icon doesn't offer much in the way of guidance.

OK - Let's not let this forum turn into another NZM'er 'my opinion is more valid then yours' speil -

SJF are reforming, if only briefly - Friggin' YAY!

How about we collectively revel in SJF gig's we have known... and look forward to this rare, unique & unexpected gift, versus playing one-upmanship with what peeps believe....

I for one am stoked to be able to see these boys again, sans Andrew albiet, but hey! When your smiling, rockin, & swaying in the front row at your gig of choice, it'll all fade into a shade of insignificant...

Just a thought....
Aroha!

Sorry to butt in but //Let's not let this forum turn into another NZM'er 'my opinion is more valid then yours' speil, has to be the stupidest comment I have read in a long while.
When you have been here long enough to know, this converstaion is a totally diffrernt kettle of fish than the bollicks on ummm say the 48may topic.
The people who are commenting have not only seen SJF play but can talk eloqently on the subject, I for one now know ( if I didn't already) from reading the comments made, where to start on SJF back cataloge
There is a huge difference between this type of converstaion and the more trollish "your favorate band sucks"
you too wil learn who and what to read and what to absolutely aviod

I'm looking forward to the Fits playing at Sammy's again in Dunedin. One of the all-time great gigs I ever saw was SJ Fits at the prime of their life (ie pretty early on I suppose, pre-music-biz bullshit) supporting the Jesus & Mary Chain. Can't remember when, maybe 1990 - ish? The Fits were just stunning - a huge, emotional roller-coaster of guitar'n'melody played with volume and passion.

I came to see JaMC but I was completely drained and a well-satisfied punter by the time the JaMC came on and played their uninspired and disinterested set . They were a definite anti-climax.

Its good to see them back - but without Brough??? He and Carter did a good job constrasting their vocals (Bad note for a heart)...

Mark petersen's vocal interplay with Shayne on Blow were quite stunning in smoe songs i.e spacing.

Mark is a very good guitarist and I have seen the fits with Brough and without and they don't miss a beat.

Andrew's songs; while very good always gave the impression of the lull before the storm of another Carter assault!!

//Andrew's songs; while very good always gave the impression of the lull before the storm of another Carter assault!! //

thats what made it so good...

as Beavis and Butthead say, the quiet bits make the loud bits sound so much better (re Radiohead's Creep, and how it sounds like a crap song until the loud bits).

I enjoy all flavors of Fits. I even dig Dimmer (the latest disc to a lesser extent).

Aside from all that, where is Andrew Brough?
Whether you like what is did for SF or not, I've gotta say that the guy's a freakin' genius. No music since '97?

I'm in the states, so it's pretty hard for me to keep up with NZ gossip...
Nevertheless, I'm a big NZ music fan.

He was asked to join but declined the invitation. There's a new edition of Stranded in Paradise coming out eventually, I wonder if the break up will be dealed with in depth there?

Anyone got any good links or stories? i'm familiar with the conflicting ideas for the band theme, and shane carter's comments when brough left the band. But in any more detail?

So sad I won't be able to see this. Needless to say, anyone out there who wants to send me mementos, live recordings or t-shirts or such, would be rewarded greatly with lots of presents.

Tonight, tonight
I'll see the band tonight. !. !!!!. !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!.

//I'll see the band tonight.

And you'll get me stuff, right? I swear, I'll make it worth your while. I can hook you up with the good stuff, and by good stuff I mean a really cute knitted hat with ears on it.

You want me to get you a tshirt? I can probably manage that! Colour/size preferences?

Wait, someone who's been to an auckland show, do they have tshirts?

You would officially be the raddest person in the universe if you did that. I would like a size large, and I prefer black or grey, but anything would do. I will seriously make you the most impressive hat you've ever seen.

Okay, I'll do my very bestest. As a warning - I have a very very large head.

Cool. I can still make the rockingest hat ever. Email me through my profile for more details. Any effort would be super appreciated.

BOOOOOO........... Straightjacket Fits fucking suck!

Take that elsewhere. If you don't like them, don't post in their forum. That's just rude.

ooooh look - a youngin' !!!

// BOOOOOO........... Straightjacket Fits fucking suck! //

Even I insult better than that
atleast make it witty...

nerdy DJs Cleanie and uDon will do a Straightjacket Fits special on Radio 1 - 6pm - 8pm ... think it's being promoted as a kinda "primer", but i think most of the time we'll be telling people to "turn it up". will play rare tracks such as Brittle (yum!), Sycamore (hopefully) and that other one ... (have had too much coffee and can't think straight) but will try to trace evolution of the Fits and off-shoot bands. live web streaming available for laughing at outside of Dunedin, but not sure of slots available. i'm gonna have fun anyway :D

that's this Sunday. heh.

who's a youngin?
