Kiwi FM launched yesterday, prompting the Prime Minister to declare, "It could well be a world first."
I just tuned in (after having to get the frequency off the old Channel Z website as the new Kiwi FM one didn't have it!) and heard a bit of Karyn talking and a bit of a song, before I realised that my stereo gets rubbish FM reception and the static was driving me crazy.
But now that it's started broadcasting, what do you think of the all-new, all-New Zealand, Kiwi FM? Do tell.

I think you need to work on your reading comprehension. There were no rumours - it was announced outright about 6 weeks ago, and there was big media campaign in the days leading up to Feb 6, when the switch took place.

try their website for local frequencies, and, as mentioned elsewhere, there's online streams and the sky 100 option as well.

"Karyn Hay, former host of 1980s music video show Radio With Pictures, presents the breakfast show from 6am to 9am. She said 20 years ago no one could imagine a commercially viable radio station playing only New Zealand music.
A guest presenter will join Hay on her show each week, starting with her long-time partner Andrew Fagan in the first week and actor Temuera Morrison in the second week.
Tadpole singer Renee Brennan and Juice TV presenter Bruce Earwaker host the afternoon show from 3pm to 7pm.
Other hosts include Opshop singer Jason Kerrison, Shihad singer Jon Toogood and actress Danielle Cormack, who is likely to develop a roots music show. "

A bit later in the morning I tuned in on my clock radio. I gasped with horror when I heard "Slice of heaven" playing, only to breathe a sigh of relief upon discovering I was tuned into a very adjacent classic hits station (yay Auckland's crowded radio market!).
I listened to the end of Karyn's breakfast show and change-over for the start of Simon's morning show. They were both good presenters and along with Kaz's hubby, interacted well together.
I was a bit worried that in order to fill up the day, they'd have to resort to playing old music a la "Slice of heaven". Well, it looks like many vintage tracks will be playlisted, but I suspect it'll be stuff most of us haven't heard much, like punk and new wave classics that don't have videos to ensure their place on '80s TV specials. So hopefully Kiwi will expose audiences to new old songs and give these bands a new audience.

James Coleman is still on air. He has his own mid morning show around 9am-12pm.
Phoebe is still around according to james, after all she was made assistant programming director of Channel Z months ago. I assume she is reprising her role but only its KiwiFM.
As for other presenters:
Tim Homer (James old co-host) 12-3pm
Renee and Bruce 3pm - 7pm
DJ Sirvere - 7pm - 9pm (hip hop show)
Jase from Opshop - 9 - midnight (goodnight Kiwi show)
Theres also weekend presenters which they haven't revealed. There's speculation from James that Bomber has moved on. It seems he is starting his talkback on tv3 or something and focusing on Rip it Up.
It's possible they will recycle the remnants of CZ presenters (Angelina, Amberleigh, Nathan) or just dispose of them completely.

Channel Z stomps KiwiFM into the ...
Channel Z stomps KiwiFM into the ground. I love NZ Music but too much of a good thing is not always a good thing. How long can they keep this 24/7 kiwiana up before it burns out? Four words: alienating Channel Z's core audience is what it is. They could've at the least kept the Channel Z name.
For a launch it seemed more self-indulgent than for NZ. All it was was an intro at the start and then what was supposed to be the Top 100 NZ countdown which seemed like they just left an ipod on autoplay. There was nothing wrong with Channel Z and I just wish that they knew that appealing to the masses isn't everything, even if it is for business' sake.
I think from the name change we can ...
I think from the name change we can assume that they were more worried about the continued use of the Channel Z moniker putting people off! I think Channel Z did manage to target a niche (as evidenced by those who have come out in support of it), but that the niche wasn't big enough to justify the use of the frequency. Therefore, they elected to change the name so that the new station might appeal to people who didn't like Channel Z.
"appealing to the masses" ?? Do you ...
"appealing to the masses" ?? Do you think that's what they're trying to do by going 100% NZ music? Surely if they wanted to appeal to the masses they'd pollute our airwaves with even more totally mainstream american crap.
In this country there has always been bad cultural cringe over art forms - television, film, music - like, if it's local, it can't be as good as if it was American / British. I've never understood this. Why are people so quick to assert that kiwis are the best (For e.g.) rugby players or the best cricket players yet they won't support their own music industry?
I think that the adverts are right, it is about bloody time, and through kiwi fm, canwest have gained a listener in me. I never would have switched from bfm to channel z, but the thought of hearing new NZ acts, old NZ acts, obscure NZ acts, really does it for me.

at the launch last hight, I'm sure they implied that this would be a period where more alternative "kiwi" music would be played, must've heard wrong looking at their choice of DJ.

Rather I think the lack of affinity with the NZ music and in particular Roots music is a worry.
For fucks sake she's an actor not a muscian or music journalist or DJ she has no credentials, it's an insult to those whom are passionate about the music rather than "play acting" at being a DJ.
PS And I think she lacks substantially as an actor aswell.

See, I think that's not a fair arguement - I don't see why musicians, DJs or music journalists are automatically more passionate about music than your every day people. DJs can play all the records they like, but they're not really going to be doing much if there are no music fans listening, you know? And it's the same for the music journalists, and musicans.

How do you know she has little affinity with NZ music and roots? Being an actor doesn't automatically exclude her from being a hardcore Kiwi roots fan.
But I can see that if a person is primarily actor, it is likely that they will spent most of their time developing their acting skills, rather than music.
// For fucks sake she's an actor not a muscian or music journalist or DJ she has no credentials, it's an insult to those whom are passionate about the music rather than "play acting" at being a DJ.
Being a radio DJ requires, among other things, performance skills, and as an actor, Danielle Cormack has those skills. I'd rather see someone who is an enthusiastic amateur with good radio skills host such a show, than have some guru expert who ums and ahs her way through a dull, monotonous show.
I'm not willing to write off Danielle Cormack as some chick who thought it might be quite kewl to, like, be a DJ. Let us see if she has the rootiness before we dismiss her.

I didn't accuse you of being rasicst or sexist. Perhaps it was naive of me, but it occurred to me that most roots performers (though certainly not all) are brown males, so I was wondering if this would be more credible than a white chick. (Well, it would for me on a superficial level.)

ok noizy, we won't go into the umming and ahhhing cause you do ;) but the shows are not monotonus! heh, i usually enjoy them, you have a much more chch outlook which i don't have and so i often get sprung by songs i'm not familiar with.

yeah, I'm a bit biased towards spinning the old chch tunes. 'tis easy enough to play the tonnes of welly material in the studio, but a lot of the 90s chch stuff I have at home is, like you say, not on such a high rotate.

I haven't heard your fine radio show (though the playlists always look good), but my basic test of radio DJ quality is if at any stage I yell out "SHUT UP AND PLAY SOME MUSIC!", then that DJ is crap.

ah, well, I'd pass with flying colours then. me and my co-host have a minimum three songs in a row ethic before any voice break, and then we usually just do a 'tell the punters what that was' break.
what I find interesting about KIWI is the number of times they *don't* tell you what the band/song is. I'm sitting here doing another playlist for the day, and I'd have thought it was the DJ's actual job to tell you what you were listening to.
Still, if their high-rotate song for the day is going to be Shihad's 'Alive', I'm all for it. What a great fucking song. How awesome is Tom's drumming?
Well the cocept was promising, but the ...
Well the cocept was promising, but the biggest problem with running a NZ radio station with only NZ music is this:
WE DON'T HAVE ENOUGTH!!! - its only been going one day, and im allready sick of thier playlist!!
NZ on AIR should have seen this comming and started supporting more bands years ago!!! -once agian,Z on AIR needs to get off this 20 year old theory of 'commercially sellable music'......because the reality of it is, only a small portion of real music enthusiasts want to hear it...
...most real music lovers chose to ingnopre the radio as you get the same formulate crud over and over again....
...ON THE OTHER HAND....
...kiwi fm could be promising, if they realise there playlist is too crap, and call for un-signed, un NZ ON AIR funded bands to send in thier Cd's and play them!!
I know alot of NZ bands that have recordings as good as, if not better than NZ on Air fuded recordings, and radio wont play them, because thay arent thru Nz on Air.....and you cant say that its cause the bands are crap......go to there shows, there are alot of people at them,......unlike the empty room shows of some radio bands!!
