DRUGS

Thomas J cynic is not very happy
at this point in time
I look like an Indian, due to the bandage round my head looking like a turban
but I will come back to that later

My cozin Jim Cynic says drugs is what makes so many musicians as shit hot as they are and when the cynic thinks of the famous musos who used and abused it makes some sense.

Back to turban/bandage.
I was on holiday last week when I thought it would be a good idea to ride down the side of a mountain on a motorized skateboard.
Old Thomas J was drunk at the time
And I fell off banging my head on a large rock.

The Question?
1. Does drugs equal better performance
and
2. If the cynic was stoned instead of drunk would he have been.... well.....stoned? (pun intended)

Forums: The Bar,

They play a part for some bands yes, and I know that can't be denied, I've seen it ( hard drugs too ). But if you put it that the drugs make a musican a better musican by taking them, then I think your wrong, if your no good before you take anything .. then your certainly not going to be any better after. I've seen artists totally incoherent with excess, booze and drugs, no good to man nor beast and I've seen artists come in clean and just play magic. I think people confuse what is seen as a recreational thing such as drugs with something that is talent enhancer .. to be honest it's not.

drugs heighten the creativity phase in the brain thus helping writers to overcome writers block - has worked for me several times.

//Here is the final word "drugs rules!"//

One school of thought is that creative visionaries have greater insight in the spiritual realm and are therefore naturally tormented souls. Most drugs (except hallucinogens) dampen spiritual sight, so provide some measure of relief; not to mention the promise of freedom from the physical. So - it's not necessarily that drugs make you more creative, but that the greater creative talent you are, the more likely you are to do drugs.

...at least that's one school of thought.

Wow Heather that seems pretty spot on. good call

yep Heather, thats definately the best answer I've seen.

http://www.therockfactory.net ]

Yeah Heather you're right on the money.

Aw shit! Getting my trolls mixed up...

If you weren't any good before you took drugs, you'll be even worse once you start taking them = drugs just put a wee spin on what you were originally doing.

As a side note - after meeting brian wilson at one of those record signing things, I had to question whether it was worth it. I love his music (s'pesh pet sounds) but the guy is fucked (his management were giving him lollies to motivate him to keep signing cds), it was really sad to realise the guy had lost the ability to relate to people through the process of making a handful of wonderful albums on drugs.

I've met brian wilson too and yes he's an almost walking almost talking advertisment for excessive indulgence, Pete Doherty's ( ex libertines, and I guess almost ex Babyshambles ) doing the life of a drug crazed musican, all he looks like is some washed out time waster, which is what he is for now, will he write the next Pet sounds ..?? who knows ( my money's on not ) Oasis at their height they were wasted and the album they recorded at the time I knew them bombed, it sold just cause it was Oasis, but it got some of the worst reviews they ever had... I know of other examples but don't want to go on, last word on the drugs thing is .. if you think it makes you a better person, better musican, better at dealing with things, better at being in contact with your inner self then do it, but don't look back 20 years down the line and say .. if only I hadn't, you know the risks of taking them, so ignorance cannot be an excuse you can use .. I am talking about the harder drugs here, Wacky I can over look though I don't partake.

and I thought that guy had Alzeimers

brian wasnt
really into all
thet til his
psychoses

3rd paragraph

//1. Does drugs equal better performance
and//

Does they? I think it's neither here nor there. Could you paint something really good on drugs if you couldn't paint? Often the depression of doing something as transient as making music might lead to drugs.

//Often the depression of doing something as transient as making music

rdor, I have to ask: do you actually like music?

oh yeah, it's just that musicians are a bit like artists - the vlaue of what they do is subjective, unless they are godly, aka Marvin Gaye.

//unless they are godly, aka Marvin Gaye
amen.

nothing subjective about $100,000

...or Mink Deville....or the Buzzcocks... the Misfits..Sly and the Family Stone. Just name drop some bands like a total tosser....

some people take drugs to hide a bit. so to sabotage the performance. god, i've seen so many talented people, who don't believe in themselves, go get boozed and drugged up so that they can produce "if only they were straight" music.

it's amazing how many musicians are real introverts, and the idea of performing music super-freaks a lot of them out.

so that's some - the other third take drugs to have a good time. a bit of fun can be had, but it's not often much for an audience - half an hour of the same bluesy riff can get a bit much. but if you are the one in it, it can feel like you are making the best music of all time.

then the other third i guess are those who think they can't be inspired with out it.

lots of crossover, but shit if i'm in the studio and paying brilliant helpful people to record stuff, i wanna be as straight as possible. but for a bit of fun and time wasting, drugs might be used. but then again, play half an hour of bluesy riffy stuff with your band, and you have a lot of dumb fun anyway.

i save up all my stimulants to have with indian food. now, that's a rush and a life experience. and i think the way many drugs were designed to be used originally.

Drugs are bad mkay

drugs are good

Okay ... Why ..??

i don't know about other drugs... but weed n e are awsome :) Not to mention alcohol

u kiddin me bruce? E is fucking awful - speed is way better.

good ol' speed is near extinction now though . . . P is the devil

well according to today's herald, there is a new form of amphetamine coming in that's more potent that P, and will be the new black.

Phew! I was worried that the Herald was going to run out of "CRAZY DRUG YOUTH" panic stories.

Apparently it's the gangs, with backing from multi-millionaires. Eric Watson, Hollywood Hulk Hogan, Richard Dean Anderson, I'm looking at you.

//Richard Dean Anderson, I'm looking at you

You're looking at him to SAVE us, right? Like, to dig a big pit and cover it with leaves between us and the drug dealers so they fall in before they can get us hooked, right? Right?

I'm sorry, Joanna, you're too young to know the truth. One day.

//whats he on now?

prolly ludes - and his dealers that retard in the red sweater, trophy and white sunhat (AKA 'ludes dude') outside starmart cnr tory and courtenay plc. man theres no doubt he'd be the next psychomaniac weilding an axe and gun.

quick question - do they even make quaaludes any more? Don't they belong to the era of bleeding and leeches?

whats his dealer doing in wellington?

//do they even make quaaludes any more?

yes but on the underground circut, just ask round any tinnie house.

Don't you be dissing brother Anderson

that dude who cut those girls hands off when he was on p and is now in court. whats he on now?

//well according to today's herald, there is a new form of amphetamine coming in that's more potent that P, and will be the new black.

yeh i heard this - its P in a rock form, They fear it will be imported into New Zealand from Asia. Its thankful ive been Speed-Free for 2 and a 1/2 years

Thomas DeQuincey makes a point in confessions of an English Opium eater that creative people will potentially have trippy dreams about creative things while a farmer who only ever thinks of cattle will have trippy dreams of cattle. Creativity kinda has to be in you to start with to be sparked off.

You probably would have banged your head on your skateboard anyway Mr Cynic unless you have a trapped Tony Hawk waiting for the right psychotropic experience to free him.

exactly. i didnt even know EATING opium was good. i only ever thought you smoked it. oops.

Not sure if you could eat opium but reckon it is a really nice turn of phrase. Samuel Taylor Coleridge, the poet who wrote Kubla Khan and the rhyme of the ancient mariner (among other things) apparently mixed it with wine, whether he took the two at the same time or you can mix them I don't know.

laudanum
i miss

I miss prescription codeine

I miss my bottle of Jack

Wait

morphene is nice I had some when I fell off skateboard, and when I fell off the roof, and when a seven foot tall russian named Vladimir threw me through a plate glass window and the time I drove my car into a paddock and hit a cow, the time I stubbed my toe with an anvil, the time I asked April Iremia if she wanted a good time (I would not have cost that much either), the time I walked under a milk truck.....
Morpheine is my friend.

Oh and I was lying about April, however I wouldn't say no.
