nothing to do with validity - some folk have got their ears screwed on better than others. John Peel had an opinion worth listening to, Ray Coloumbus not so much - same as on this board.
If someone is presented with the thruth about a band but still decides they enjoy thier music, their opinon about that band is not "wrong". You can't tell someone they can not enjoy something. That's the beauty of opinions - not everyone likes the same thing - there's nothing wrong with that so don't slam them (or the bands they like) for it. That 's all I was saying.
Lillith - I actually said "given the same information" that kinda means both opinions would be based on the "truth". So you haven't really addressed the question.
//given the same information
it's the interpretation of that information that distinguishes those with ears and those without a clue.
I hear where you're coming from - everyones opinion is as valid as the next, it's down to perception, there's no ultimate truth, etc. But on a message board with 23,000+ members I'd rather listen to those that have got something worth saying. Is that wrong?
No. I agree with you. What I'm getting at is people who slam others choices in music purely because they are "pop" and widely marketable. I'm not into music like that myslef, but I don't go bad mouthing it just cos I don't like it. I'm fully open to an intellegent discussion. Just not "Band X sucks. They have no talent" etc. There's alot of that on these boards I rekon.
i think more to the point is that people are allowed to voice their own opinion about bands artists etc and you can choose to take offence or not as you please.if your gonna poo poo on someones music taste do so with justification.
i think if people stopped treating music like football teams, as in feeling like they're 'supporting' it at the cost of hating anything else they might come across, instead of simply enjoying music that they actually like, then things would be a lot happier? better? more boring? something...
i don't think that chromosome starts to work until you're in your late 20s though, so i'll just shut the fuck up :-)
as you were...
Basically indie music appeals to three kinds of people:
Insecure Nerds (The smiths, Sonic Youth etc)
Disgusting Punk types (DK etc)
Trendy Assholes (Bjork, whatever)
I admit that these examples are rather generic and dated but its the truth, I don't really think that music "experts" necessarily like lesser known bands, as obsessive fans tend more towards stuff like Elvis or the Beach Boys.
//but it's the truth
Is that right, good thing you pointed that out cause there I was thinking it was just your bullshit opinion.
So I got the Rev, Nas, Husker du, FNM, Amp 2 and the Singles soundtrack in the disc changer at the moment is there any hope for me Cas?
The more you listen to music, the more you know about music and the less interested you are to hear things that seem predictable and generic. Some people are 12 or 15 and something and are just starting out, some people are older and have more perspective. To see elitism taken to a ridiculous extreme follow the link below (I hope I did it right!).
You did it right. Have you spent long enough reading there to see what sort of music passes muster? I took a look but the amount of attitude in the first set of comments was too much for me. It must take a particular sort of person to submit oneself to such an ordeal, to be given what exactly if they succeed? Approval of some anonymous LJ'ers? Please!
thats an amazing site, one guy has one of his interests as "new zealand", how utterly pretencious, poor buggers trying to join. go there for a sad laugh
Yup, it's pretty insane. I find it pretty entertaining, and I've been watching it for ages. You can understand how it works - applicants need to pick mostly things that people with no interest in music haven't heard of, need to have stylistic diversity, somethings that don't take themselves too seriously, and at least a handful of non-white people. When it gets to that kind of level, music stops being fun. By the same token, there are a lot of predictable choices like The Beatles, The Smiths, The Pixies etc that just keep coming up from everyone, so it's not surprising that they get snarky at those.
I totally recommend the Motley Crue/Neil Strauss book "The Dirt". A bestseller overseas, intelligent and funny too. Motley Crue are one of those bands that have maintained their aura of purity by not being on air that often. If you have written an album that you would place on a shelf alongside a Mo. Cr. cd, please contact me and I would be glad to listen to it.
I completely understadn what type of people you are referring to, not people who express valid opinions about bands, like i think they're a bit bland, but instead say how fucking predictable and boring and commercial, they just sound like every other band. And will only claim to like a band whilst its in the pre pubescent stages of fame, mocks anything that follows a trend that is widely followed, why bother listening to them, they are fickle and have opinions which serve no purpose...shit i can even appreciate music as being good within its own genre even if i dont like that type of music, people should stop being so black and white about things
