I mean..hey, the lineup this year aint that shabby. The Violent Femmes, The Shins and The Cat Empire. Man, its a hell of a lot better then last years Alient Ant Farm lineup.
Mandy, I haven't been to poppas for a while, but whenever I go there I look back at some of the old ori posters and think, man, that woulda kicked arse.
Bob Scott is playing support to the Shins in Dunners, and it's very likely that he will be doing a few Clean and Bats tunes. his backing band is 3/4 of Onanon and they'll also be playing a few Gina Rocco songs (with her and Bob). plus the Chills are playing that night too.
it's like a greek myth, eating in Poppas. like Tantalus or something. yummy pizza (ala grapes), but a golden age of music on the walls. god, some of those orientation posters (the cartooning on them is ace too) but you just look down the list, and goddamit if i actually wanted to see all of those bands listed. except perhaps the hypnotist. sometimes orientation was like the Film Festival - you had to actually seriously co-ordinate your circadian rhythm around living through it.
are you one of those quarters? surely an amazing chance. ori looks good this year. pity the violent femmes are trapped in the Union (hall) because the Town (hall) is booked.
this year's lineup suggests Ori is definitely getting back on track. but boy do they have a lot of making up to do for the dark years of smash mouth and alien ant farm
nope. while i would give a limb or two to play with Bob, he and 3/4 of my band are Gina's backing band, and she's kinda folkish. i cannot ever play folk music. i'd get road rage, but it would be folk rage. and it wouldn't be pretty or musical. i'd wake up in a ditch somewhere after a massive blackout, and Dunedin would be littered with broken acoustic guitars. and all the pretty flowers would be uprooted and trod upon.

While I'm not trying to be snide, are you a member of a students' association, Teina? Because their members are the only people they have to 'make it up' to. I don't know attendence figures for Smashmouth, but the Alien Ant Farm gig was really popular with students, which is what Orientation is about. My first year of Uni, they booked Greg Johnson and only 32 people went.
I dunno, I think that it's a general appearance thing - who's playing at orientation matters to more than just students because there's a lot of spin off
Don't get me wrong, I think it's great that townies (ha ha, I've been watching too many American TV shows) get into Orientation, and I'm no Smashmouth or AAF fan, but the simple fact of the matter is that students' associations have to pay the bills. If they book ever-so-cool-but-not-so-popular bands for Orientation and they lose money, then that's students' money that they're losing, which isn't a cool thing to do at all.
My student days are long gone Joanna but back when I was a member, I remember many great orientation gigs at Union Hall sold out. I also remember all my non-student friends coming along to the gigs as well. A great orientation gig is as much about the whole town as it is about the students imho. I'm not going to argue the inner workings of student association with you. I'm just happy to see a couple of shows coming up for this orientation week that I'm looking forward to attending.
