Snoop & Pharrell - Drop It Like It's Hot (don't know how this charted in NZ, but a good example of how innovative pop can be IMO)
Jaylib - Champion Sounds (hip-hop from producers Jay-Dee and Madlib)
Triosk - Moment Returns (Sydney jazz trio with electronics in the mix.. not at all dancey, more ambient if anything.. recommended if anyone's heard the Necks?)
The Labcoats - Acid & Alkaline (possibly the craziest NZ album I've heard... duelling trumpets, banjo, sampled vocal percussion, 'Forbidden Planet' style synth oscillating... some of it's just chaos, other bits are really beautiful)
Junior Boys - Last Exit (been listening to this for months... sorta soft-and-sensitive 80s song-writing vibes meets cool syncopated beats... I dunno, I can never describe it properly)
+ keep returning to this one song by Songs: Ohia, 'The Lioness'. Moody quiet "rock". Got it as a free download at the link below.
yeah that Junior Boys is good. 'birthday' is a smooth tune. I boughtthe Jaylib ablum but need to listen to it more. currently d/loading some Songs: Ohia's tracks... sounds intersting
myself
Animal Collective - Sung Tongs. probably my top pick for 04, definitely top 5. its wierd ass american folk , needs a few listens to take it all in, but oh man the melodies are terrific. 'winters love', 'you could win a rabbit' and 'leaf house' are getting heavy summer rotation
Joanna Newsom - the Milk eyed meander. shes kind of bjorkish/ mum soundin g voice, straight over her own harp playing. most of the songs are fairly uptempo. its clean and easy to listen to, although sometimes her voice can grate a little. i like it thoughh
viktor vaughn - venemous villan. its more edgey than madvillany (which is another awseome album) . pretty much mf doom is the man right now and can do no wrong
asides from that, the dfa comp, hood (similar to the notwist), bloc party. instrumentl hip hop like controller 7 and dabrye. oh the new daft punk leaked today im trying to get that
Yeah, I really like Hood's 'Cycle of Days and Seasons', which is the one before they went all Notwist-y. Well, sort of. It's much moodier and less disjointed than what they've done since.
Looking forward to the new Daft Punk too much to want to download it!?
I wasn't taking the piss re: 'Drop It Like It's Hot', it's definitely a damn weird track (super sparse, beat is bassline, hissy noises seeping between beats, mouth pop percussion, slide whistle... this is not the classic formula for a chart track) and I have no idea of what the NZ charts look like cos I'm in Oz.
Definitely keen to check out Animal Collective. Have heard their earlier two albums as Animal Collective, plus something by one of the members, but found them pretty hard going. I understand the latest is heaps more accessible.
Yeah I see what you mean, I just thought the 'sparseness' could also be a glaringly obvious example that hip-hop producers are simply just running out of ideas...maybe?
Maybe if my first experience hadn't been the video...I don't care who it is, there's just something so so wrong about a cat in his late-thirties posing next to his tricycle still talking about being a bad ass gansger crip homeboy..
Maybe I need a rolly on my arm and go pour some Sean Don and roll some best weed and get it going on to understand
i reckon that 'drop it like it's hot' is a joke on hip hop and music in general.
lyrics are crap (probably written in 30 mins) and the production would have taken about 5 mins in Reason.
they are just trying to see what minimal amount of work can generate maximum amount of income.
Yes, Sam as ever, on the money.
