So I got to see Dark Tower play last night at The Temple. The enigmatic and high Energy Lindon Puffin played with the guys and it made for an interesting night of contrasts. Audience numbers were up and lots of "non-sceners" seemed to have drifted in, despite the $10 cover charge, to enjoy the show. Led me to think that perhaps, even after all this time, DT still maintain a following. YAY! It was a fucken cool show. They previewed material from the upcoming album and displayed a maturity and level of consciousness that, quite frankly, blew me away, or just blew me. The art of topical songwriting in New Zealand seems to have died completely with the "Industry" opting for a softer, poofier "Pop" approach. These chaps had something to say about just about every recent current event and were not afraid of CIA, FBI, Hip-Hop Communitty or Government reprisals. The wankfest that is "New Zealand Hip Hop" doesnt seem to like these guys and I don't blame em. Dark Tower represent the things that NZ Hip Hop is truly lacking, originality and a yearning to say what EXACTLY is on their minds regardless of posturing trends or designer fucking urban streetwear, and therefore SHOULD be percieved as a threat. Hip Hop is gay anyway....

The reason that hip hop doesn't like Dark Tower, is because Dark Tower is shit. What the hell was 'baggy trousers' anyway? It was like a fucking anthem for kids with shitty nappies! Their so-called level of conciousness is more like rampant complaining, about things that don't even affect them ie. the FBI and CIA. This is New Zealand. They talk about keepin it real and roots and they're ignoring the fact that New Zealanders DON'T HAVE AMERICAN ACCENTS. Why do they have to pretend to be bad rappers with American accents. At least be real and admit to being bad rappers with New Zealand accents.
Hip Hop in general is shit, but at least 'poofy' old King Kapisi sings about overstaying, instead of imaginary shoot-outs in an alley in Soho.
Lindon Puffin - the polite word is interesting. The truth is, there is a talentless display if ever I saw one.
The one thing that it all keeps coming back to is rock n roll. Take The Datsuns - that is music to go wild to, and its textured without electronics - admirable in this age of protools and synths being used in pre-production instead of post. People with money buying machines they don't even know how to use, thats what dance/hiphop culture is.
And St Lucy, you are shit as well. Give me Blondie anyday.
Donkey - you're just plain stupid. Lindon Puffin is more interesting then 50% of NZ Hip Hop Put together and dark tower are one of the few nz acts who dont have American Accents you dumb arse! Rock and Roll is just primal - nothing new there mate, belle and sebastian will get closer to your soul anyday.
Hope you saved the chicken mr L

here's a review of the last gig together:
a homecoming special galore for new zealand music week down at the dux. broadcast simultaneously to rdu, the gig was underway quickly with lindon embracing a home crowd for the first time since setting off on his 'really real tour' back in january. after a long time on the road you'd expect a character like lindon to be a little warn but he went right to the kill, though he still veered completely off track at any given moment to tell a little anecdote about his various performances. he played many new songs along with tracks off of his debut full- length 'stuff like that' and even found time to get a couple of pals up on stage for accompaniment - it was a hearty return from an acclaimed national treasure.
it was quite a changed dark tower outfit from the 'baggy trousers' days - now back to just a two piece and primarily residing in auckland, their newer songs have a much darker, spiteful tone to their early material. not that they're no longer a fun band - they put on an eccentric show joined by (jodie's father) david lloyd on reed whistle and a bouzouki player of all things! promising a new album, they shouted out political and in your face rhymes, and even managed a free-style jam starting with their old-school signature song 'zeal man' over a familiar little backing track (an appropriated version of 50 cents 'in da club').

DARK TOWER
the new Dark Tower album ‘The Dark World’ is finished and awaiting manufacture.
Nelsons excellent animation artist Brendon Palmer has finally (after a year) finished an animated music video for the anti ‘America War on Terror’ track ‘Barad Dur’.
C4 has had the video for over a month and looks as though they are refusing to play it... perhaps the content is too ‘mature’ – as it has graphic displays of war and terror. in animated form of course.
but we don’t need television now to see such things as music videos – you can download the film from the nice people at http://www.bands.co.nz/
'It's been a long time since I rock and rolled
It's been a long time since I did the Stroll
Ooh, let me get it back, let me get it back
Let me get it back - baby, where I come from
It's been a long time, been a long time
Been a long lonely, lonely, lonely, lonely, lonely time - yes, it has'
here is it - the long awaited (by me and eli) dark tower album 'THE DARK WORLD'.
the dark world is being released this week.
when you get the album you will also be gettiing a cd rom section including:
9 mp3's that didnt make the album cut, mainly cos they are diss songs about local rappers,
1 mpeg music video that your friendy C4 staff refused to play.
3 big pics of your nz accent rapping dark tower heros.
but wait thats not all you get...
you also get a 75 minute cd alled THE PACIFIC SCANDAL
the pacific scandal is the best instrumentals from Canterbury Drafts
and The Dark World (re-worked) and about 6 other trax that you havent heard.
and that's not all - if you buy THE DARK WORLD you also have the pleasure
of hearing and owning 'helen clark/john campbell' GE corn interview.
and playing it to all your friends at election time to remind them how sneaky
politicials can be.
and that's not all - buy your copy soon cos there's one song that given a bit of
attention, we will have to pull the album fro the shelves. (say no more!)
it's been a long time coming and now I can breathe again.
thanks, Jody.
p.s. new extremely cool website for THE PACIFIC SCANDAL is coming soon.
Keen to pick up a copy of Dark World, as soon as I get the chance, money allowing. Can I purchase copy up more directly benefiting you than would be if I bought it at Real Groovy; not only that, but there's only one copy with the Pacific Scandal bonus cd remaining, which could likely vanish before I have enough money to buy it...
Ohh, and Liz Barry played Hollerback, maybe one of the few music hosts with a fairly large listenship to show some initiative, and give Dark Tower some air play. Pity they have axed her for some new hipster.
it always takes me back when someone is actually interested in buying an album. especially when they are from NZ. it seems these days only australian (and british) listeners and media are interested in anything we do. I've been getting radio interviews, live to airs, profiles, articles, reviews, production credits, guest emcee spots... etc. no one gives a toss in nz anymore.
pity - cos NZ is missing out on some really cool stuff. so as long as there's love, that's where I'll be going!
The best way to get the dark world (depending where you live) is thru a shop, this keeps everyone happy. the shop, the distro - then me... it's better all round.
if you miss out on the free cd I will post you one, no worries... mail me your address: jody@trillion.co.nz
Nice interview with Robert Scott, Jody, it's a shame that moderate editing appeared to have been employed, and cut the substance back, however anything more than token gestures is appreciated by any media with regards to worthwhile types like Robert. Good work the Music Mix folks.
Good to see that Ballon Adventure is gonna be re-issued through She'll Be Right Records, by the by too. You should try and convince John that some kind of Mestar package might be plausible, specially now that they are active, focal point being the new LP. Keep up the good work. In all areas; we can only hope that Dam Native produce a follow up, to compliment the marginal output of worthwhile non-niggazshite-hype hop hip hop.
ah yeah,
it's all a bit weird.
like an email tennis match in a public forum.
re: robert scott. the man is a very good talker, the show is limited in format to allow a certain time for the ammount of interview. I chose the most interesting and topic flowing parts. all subjective of course.
you should also keep an ear out for my REMIX of a track off THE BATS new album.
The track is called 'UP TO THE SKY' .
review - rip it up:
It’s been an up, a down, and a long road for these lads. Most readily associated with the ‘baggy trousers’ mantra. Dark Tower’s latest recording proves real zeal boys Eli Foley and Jody Lloyd have more to talk about than roomy pants. Political and sharp. The Dark World confronts via potent rhyme issues that few dare to address in prose. Audio from some of the memorable media confrontations of recent times [ref. Clark vs Campbell] has been cut in to prove more than one point, and euphemisms are absent. Beyond the message, Dark Tower have crafted a sturdy soundscape to match. Reasonably tight rhythms and a proud accent put the duo at the top end of the local smokestack. This is not an album that’s trying to be broadly and globally appropriate, it’s a plea to recognise and deal with the bullshit shat here at home before home gets to feeling alien. Will people hear that, or simply push the pointing finger aside?
