These Hawkes Bay lads have been getting quite a bit of airplay on Active here in Welly's recently. Be nice to see some of their stuff here on NZM, I definately think they're up there with the best (NZ bands) ..... they get my vote for best new band for sure. Bring on the new CD and lets see.
Jakob's debut has to be one of the most promising of the last few years - something you know you'll still be listening to in 20 years time, when a whole lot of other stuff has faded way. Bring on the next album!!
This guy has obviously enjoyed some long jam sessions at home with his guitar. An awesome dreamy enamble, for greatest effect try with with mind altering substances ...
true bobcat true... forth and multiply... suka and robert scott's new album make a wee 4some of laden warbling lush aural treats... love them all... and take me south.
Trucked on down to Valve last night to see Jakob live for the first time. Jakob came out first and their sound washed me away into their ocean of dreamy soundscapes and groove. The bass and drums locked together to produce a tight rhythm that thundered and drove jakob along, beautifully accompanied by seemless guitaring. A true exploration of groove and noise.
Nice one fulla's, if you haven't seen jakob lately then you're missing out, they're doing some dates with the subliminals in 2 weeks time including Orientation at Waikato...Jeff, where are J and Maurie in the vid? Next one eh?
just shot jakob for an installation at morph gallery here in napier = a moment from different angles... video should be showing up here soon... jakob have been recording and what I've heard so far is fekking awesome
I've been trying to get hold of Jakobs first album for about the last four months, I ordered it from real groovy about 3 months ago but they still haven't got it. Does anyone know where I could get a copy of it???
I've got the there first cd. Nearly went to sleep listening to it. Discovered there was a hidden track, adout 5 or so minutes after Means. Sweet track guys...when the album comming out. If some one knows ,let me know.
Tour coming up... to promote "Subsets of Sets" Album due out 2nd August... If you haven't caught these guys live you should, they're wicked, you'll be moved. Go and check out the album before you go see them too.
caught the lads at valve the other nite with looma... what a superb evening.... everyone must buy album.... and damm that new vid is super sexy .. these guys are unstoppable ...
how good was that? absolute bliss up @ orange, this was the last time that i saw jakob play before departing the bay, the buzz that nite was awesome, jakob, looma and everyone else there that night ROCKED, think that was the fundraiser night for anthony and that, hats off to everyone....
Now i dont mean to pass doubt on jakobs song writing, But has anyone here heard mogwai's song "a cheery wave from stranded youngsters"? The bass riff in that is very similar or almost identical to "a nice day for an earthquake".
Also much of their new album just takes bits from HDU or mogwai like a cover band. Listen to tenrapid by mogwai and you will hear most of jakobs songs in it. Also cross channel multi tap by HDU.
sorry to by a such a wank but still.
i'd be interested in any response to this... I like jakob too, but can't help getting a bit confused about influences in the same way. Has anyone heard jakob's response to these sorts of questions - i'm sure it's been talked about before with them...?
yeah I really like Jakob too. They are really great. But i mean why would i want an album of mogwai and HDU covers?
Sure there is some parts which dont sound the same as either HDU or mogwai. But still 98% does.
i was slightly put off by them saying what they were doing was original.
yo how's the blizzards down their dk? - I'm from sa-sa-southland - but living in napier now ... WARMER
anyways... Jakob - I first heard them when they first formed - they used to use my lounge to practice in - I'd listen to them through the wall while I was in the bath - lying back with my ears under the water... imagine that
there is no other band I'd ever consider letting practice in my own home
something about these dudes - the way they get the room to hum - resonate - then they start to lay on the melodies and the reverberances and you get into a trance... transported
I reckon they put out a kind of harmonic therapy - like holographic repatterning or something..
I could compare them to mogwai or hdu - and maybe that's ineviteable right now... like the beginning of a revolution in music when the instigators are all on similar wavelengths...
but I can see Jakob evolving beyond all that... they have many musical influences to exorcise - as do we all... that's the therapy I guess - the distilling out of all your influences - to find your own voice being resonated up out of the void
I've seen these guys writing their music - I've seen the hours and hours of quiet concentration and loud expression . this stuff is their mantra
very low-key - no vocalist - no message - no frills - just rock solid grandeur and subtle undertones
i tend to agree with dunedinkid's comments about the similarities between jakob and mogwai/hdu. i believe that this is especially relevant for their latest album, which does come across as too mogwai and hdu, and it tends to bore me quickly....
but in saying this, i find their first album like nothing ever before. on this one they just hit the spot.....it is pure genius......this album is original.....sounds a bit more like godspeed you black emperor! than mogwai...
verstaerker is one of most amazing songs ever written.
so my advice for anyone doubting jakob as a brilliant band, go get their first self-titled album and prepared to be blown away
I won the first Jakob album. So i was like counting the days till the album came out. When i heard it it really upset me. I mean it is very well done. but like i said before just too much of the same thing already done. I mean that bass riff! the tape delay! ARGH! it is all too much.
I mean Dunedin has band's who play the same sorta genre as jakob but dont sound the same: take carriage H and operation rolling thunder. Both fucking wicked bands who sorta play the same genre but when they are down on record you can tel they are totally different. Carriage H more rock and roll punk rock bleeding ears, ORT more drawn out instrumental noise.
but anyway jakob still up there with my favourite bands. But maybe they should listen to something other than HDU and Mogwai
yeah i got to agree. i mean i first heard the new album driving down south in the middle of the night and it was really doing it for me, i mean it was fucking gorgeous and then I got to track 11 which I think is "the collar sets well" and "what the fuck?!!" hdu amino??? it almost fucked the album for me. then i was at the rockquest finals and saw carriage h's set and "what the fuck" hdu??? i mean i'm not begruding them winning or anything but when did originality stop being important? ok so maybe hdu have left that sound behind, the fireworks album seems to be going somewhere else so perhaps it's not such a bad thing to have these bands pick up where they left off, but i'd like them to take it further not just replicate it.
No way i would say Carriage H are like HDU anymore no way. they have changed soo much.
LIke it is sorta sonic noise with rock and roll? haha interesting.
anyway. Jakobs new album is just upsetting to me now
you have to walk before you can run, hdu kept going and as such have moved out of the shadow of bailterspace it seems, not being much of a mogwai fan (much prefer my b/space thanks) i can't comment on the comparisons there. it does seem that jakob have a soul and a character to there music and i bet that in time they will blow minds. i think there shit sounds brilliant the cymbol wash and base hum is nice and intense yeah. i was all set to pick up there album subsets and despite the comments here i think i will?
one time for the bailterespace massive!!
(anyone keen to suggest who influenced the space?)
obscuring your influences isn't the be-all and end-all of music, even in the noiserock ouvre...bands will always somewhat like -someone- else - that's just the nature of everyone using the same tim signatures/instruments/etc. rock n roll bands just get over it and either
[1] embrace their derivativeness and just rock out, or
[2] try putting together a yet-untried -combination- of those influences.
oh and here's conspiracy for you: the '98 jakob EP sounded like momento mori before it was even released. is it just the the limited scope of the tape delay, or are jakob secretly stealing tristan d's thoughts before he even has them?
um, yeh.
i'll still be rocking out to jakob tonight. derivative or no.
This really fucks me off.
Jakob sure sound like HDU and mogwai. but they are stil different the image and the way they are delivering the music is different.
As for carriage H these boys are my fucking darlings. I adore their carefree punk rock attitude and the way they deliver music recorded and not recorded. I have seen about 13 of their shows so i should know. The only ways they are similar with HDU is their haircuts.
As for HDU they will go down in new zealands music history as one of the great bands to inspire others. Even thou when they started they ripped off snapper and bailterspace.
See we all needed to start somewhere.
I cant wait till carriage H deliever their Enemy sound. i think youll be surprised from what i have been told about the way their music is going.
this topic has given me such a good insight in jakob/subset of sets. much better than the review in rip it up! i've gotta go buy it now - see what all the fuss is about!!
I totally agree with samflux about this new music we call noise music.
But i mean HDU did copy bailterspace and snapper so everyone copys and mogwai copyed slint so there. Everyone copys.
Maybe in a few years new noise bands will come out and a stirr will be started because they sound like Carriage H or Jakob?
I heard Carriage H are doing a tour with DImmer soonish. Does anyone know the dates?
I've thought about this now and then, it is like there are some sounds that are ok to emulate because everyone else does such as your basic rock and then there are the other sounds that are frowned upon. For example the Brit act Zero 7 who sound very similar to Air, I never thought anyone would "copy" Air, it seemed wrong. I think you have to loosen the need for "new" sounds and enjoy the different flavours instead.
but is it "good music" if it's a copy? If someone blatantly copies a rock song, its instantly recognisable and generally there's some slamming, but this noise rock is newish (at least in mainstream) and unfamilar to a lot of us and therefore there seems to be a bit more forgiveness towards copying. but surely its as easy to copy a noise rock song as it is a metal riff? i mean come on! you can paint a copy of a famous painting and there may be some skill required to paint a copy but it's still a copy and noone's gonna call it a masterpiece. why are the rules different for music?
there's no rules - just do it - you'll find this out for yourself - rules come later - through the eyes of the beholder...
jakob is a prime example of a band that would keep doing what they do even without a label - I'm talking record label AND any label we might attach to them
copy / derive / evolve = humble beginnings / perhaps for the familiarity buzz / or to map out a context ... good communication uses familiar forms of language ... more complex forms follow
