depends greatly on the make. personally i kinda regretted getting the ole 100w cheapo combo ($600-$700), 6 months later i ended up buying a 300W trace elliot head (around NZ$1500) when i was in england, and i've never needed anything more (well, apart from the obligatory 4x10 cab, which set me back a further $500 2nd hand).
Combo or just the head? Valve, Solidstate or hybrid?
New you are probably looking pretty close to $1k for a 100watt solid state combo - some brands will be a little more, some a little cheaper. With solid state Im not sure if "you get what you pay for" is valid cos they'll all come with the same length store warranty.
2nd hand I wouldnt pay more than $600 for a SS bass combo and that had better in as new condition and have a gold plated volume knob. I sold a 10 yr old Fender 100 watt combo earlier in the year for $350, it was a little beat up but sounded pretty good.
-Im a guitarist but bought a bass amp a little while ago as a toy to play around on when working up song ideas (I have an old USA fretless Fender P Bass). I picked up a Peavey Mark 3 head and a Peavey 15" bin for $500... which was reasonable looking at prices on ebay and trade me.
