To any musos out there, young/old or whatever, i have a question...what is it that drives you...how much of it is for the love of the music and how much of it is ego???. Are there other factors that make you want to get up in front of people and strut your stuff?? I'm not in a band but have been associated with a few over the years, and from a purely observational point of view ego appears to be the main driving force behind at least one member of any band you care to name. This can be a good thing, but if theres more than one strong ego in a band it can ultimately lead to conflict and eventually destroy it. Some would argue it adds spice to the creative process...nuthin like a bit of angst to produce a real hard out performance. Food for thought . Anyways...i'm keen to understand wot makes you guys/gals tick....feel free to say your bit and be honest...
well deek im in a band (vocalist), and what drives me to keep practising whenever i can is my dream of making a living from doing something i truly love. never mind sacrificing my life for music, i actually wanna live in relative comfort. but if somehow i can have food on my table and have other basic comforts, i would be glad to follow my life as a musician. the feeling i get when we mesh all our parts together; the feeling when we have a practise for the first time in ages; when we perform live to a good crowd; whenever we do anything i get a good feeling. i mean im even sorta getting a sick and twisted rush from planning how to kick out one of our guitarists!! granted i get a buzz from performing, probably the biggest buzz out of all band related stuff is to do with performing. and it would be interesting to see, if i had the option of being able to perform successfully without practising, would i take it. i'd think so, but maybe what makes performing/massaging my ego so great is all the hard work youve put into the band finally paying off. no matter what anyone else says or does, ill still love music, and ill follow it my whole life, but im not gonna ruin my life for it.
shit!.... I've been away for a while and just got back to this site...taking a while to find my way around....a bit like being in a house where everybodys shifted the furniture round...cant find a furken thing!!! But big ups to NZM for making the changes - all for the better i'm sure. Best I get used to it !
Anyways - cheers for the comments jimi. Obviously youre very passionate about your music. Am I correct in assuming that the buzz you get out of your performance is more important in the long run than what the audience think?? Should be a bit of both dont you think. actually i'm surprised nobody else has replied to my post...either there are no other musos here or they cant be fucked commenting....maybe exposing ones ego for analysis is not a good look.....although i must say tom from the HAD has come out with some very honest and revealing comments in his posts to mike hunt....excellent!!! nuthin beats hearing it from the horses mouth...
I just can't NOT do it. It's me. It's not an 'interest' or 'pastime', although I can't seem to give it the time I want to give it. Maybe that's why it's so important to me, because it's infrequent. Sometimes I wonder how diferent things would be if it was all I did. Maybe I wouldn't like it as much, or it would upset the balance somehow.... maybe I'm scared of putting myself out there too much. I can't deny that music is all I want to do. Tomble, how do you do it? You have a lot of support on this forum, and I respect how tough you are- having people piss on the music of your soul, and stepping them out demanding an explanation.... awesome, full respect from here.
I guess having complete faith in what you do also means not listening to anyone else's negative shit even for a second. The greatest thing in the world is to have complete faith in your passion, whatever it is.
Every gig we play is a good excuse for a piss up, and to get all our mates together for a night out is what it is all about for us.
The music is important, however it is not the be all and end all...
hey tigers...
well to tell you the truth im probably not fit to respond to this.....but i'll give it a go.
Im not actually in a band....but it is the one thing that i would love to do most. Unfortunetly i havent found anyone who both shares my love of music and would like to do something with it.
I dont believe i was born with that great a musical ability...but i do sing...and am learning to play some half arsed guitar.........
anyway the point of me saying this is, .....well basically if you are in a band.....just think yourself lucky. music and art.....its never easy to make a living of.......but if your in a band......just think yourself lucky because at least your able to do something........
ps: ok i understand i havent really answered your question there deek......but......i think everyone should just realize that if they're in a band, and are passionate of not.........and even if there just stroking their own egos.....i mean......they're just lucky to be ABLE to do something they love......
wow man.........**sigh** just reading that.....i really have got to shut up with some of my dribble......i mean i mean everything i just said......i just myself forgot how lucky i am i can draw......wow......ahhhhhh i dunnoo......i talk shit sometimes.
Who said you need to be in a band? I'm a solo performer - most acoustic indie folk/blues/pop in the style of Billy Bragg, Ron Sexsmith and early Dylan. I'm writing songs at the moment and I'll be cutting some demos in the not-too-distant future.
good point about being solo.
im in band, playing at the york street acids test in auckland. what drives me is jsut the fact that i love making music, thats about all, its heaps of fun too
hey soldier boy, i think being a soloist can be quite a good experience, due to full power over creative processes and full credit for good work, but i reckon one of the best parts of being in a band is the personal relationships that develop. the level of understanding and unspoken knowledge we have of each other after two years is something totally different to what i have ever experienced in 'real' life. something very special... i mean sometimes doesnt it get a bit lonely for you when you're composing??
Me not in Band , but i love those little, unknown or little known bands they are the best, i love st8 88 (state 88) and my cousins band whose name nobody can pronoun. But the little bands should go for it,

Having played covers for years in the Palmy/Wgtn region - in such bands as - Bedrock, Psycho Chicken, ZooStation and Femme Fatale, et alia - the four of us decided to focus our attention on producing a show that brought the fantastic U2 live experience to Kiwis. We are fanatical U2 fans and do our best to replicate songs/instruments/vox/imaging/costuming/staging.......to the real thing.
We will be playing again in Wgtn 9 Nov (approx) and are planning a nationwide tour for next year. Check out the website for the latest and downloads.
Deek - in response to your query of "what is it that drives you...how much of it is for the love of the music and how much of it is ego???" I can say from my personal experience, 10 yrs playing in bands, of the people I have been involved with in music projects, ego has little impact on the desire to perform and make music. At least no more than if one is good at doing something, and finds enjoyment in doing it and as such gains gratification from carrying out that act - whether internally or externally - whether that is career, sport, or otherwise. Music is full of ego-maniacs - but so is business, politics, media, religion.......anything! What drives EBTTRT is the challenge of reproducing what we think is some of the best music in the world and providing people here in NZ an opportunity to hear and see songs live which they would otherwise not - unless they were able to travel the globe while U2 were touring.
I am new to this forum and as yet have not found any threads relating to cover/tribute bands. Is it a topic that is discussed? Ciao

Let me get this straight - you're calling me a fool just for not liking a band that you happen to like. Well hey, it's a free country, we don't ALL have to think and act alike. I'm not going to bash people who like the feelers - I'm not calling THEM fools. If they want to listen to the feelers, that's fine. To each his/her own, mate. Remember that.
When, oh when are people gonna realise that if we all liked the same stuffs then this world would be one hell of a boring place? It is now time for all of us to revel in the fact that we may disagree about some things - its very important! It makes you realise that you are your own human being. Blah Blah Blah Blah....
