Forums: NZ Music,

Hi Karin - you've picked a great, but large, topic. Here's some basics:

NZs "premier" rock band of the last decade is Shihad - for a brief history go to: http://www.wildsiderecords.com/artist.cfm?i=26
'Flying Nun' is an important record label which has released a tonne of classic nz albums - their website is: http://www.flyingnun.co.nz/history.cfm
& recently there's been a lot happening in nz hiphop - P Money & Scribe: http://www.nzmusic.com/artist.cfm?i=737

Theres lots of theory on how nz is isolated from the rest of the world which is reflected in the style of music released here & defining the "new zealand sound", etc. - as I said before: big topic, & too much to go into here...

also, a lot of nz rock is described as being more melodic/having better beats than other countries rock, as we are influenced by the pacific islands music, being, well, in the pacific, taking things from hiphop and traditional music.
ok im aware that i really didnt explain that well...

You might be interested in checking out Coke Smokefree RockQuest, a competition for young rock bands, most of whom are still in school. The competition gets a lot of abuse on this site for all sorts of reasons, but it's a well-established part of the youth rock scene.

The link is the official site, but search these forums for "rock quest" and you'll get a wider range of opinions.

Just for what it's worth: most bands entering the competition end up with a bit of a stigma attached ("just another rockquest band") but a few bands that perform well in the competition go on to become quite popular, at least on student radio. Marystaple is an example, and The Checks, also members of one band - Carriage H - have become quite successful under a new name, Die! Die! Die!.

Don't forget evermore

you'll probably find this out from researching flying nun records but the city of dunedin has had a huge influence on the development of new zealands popular rock music....esp in it's formative years

Also Music is being encouraged in high schools by a organisation called Play it Strange":

I think that under the current NZ government, arts and music is being encouraged to grow and thrive.

amen to all of the above!

Ordering NZ music for a listen can be an expensive task as I havent found it for sale in Europe (if anyone can tell me where to find it here that would be great). If you just want to hear a few samples of tracks a great way to go is www.smokecds.com who have around 30 seconds of most tracks on the albums for sale on their website, which has an excellent selection. If you are interested in buying some, a selection of good NZ music from the last 20 years is on the albums 'Nature's Best' which has three volumes each with 2CDs. Its fairly 'middle of the road' music. Smoke also has a section called 'NZ compilations' which has many different good artists' best tracks. The music is great and truly much better than a lot of what is offered this side of the world I think!

very expensive. choose wiselyt but nkow your limit sand pick misfits of science. they drop the boogie down!
