Elephant

The movie about the columbine high school shootings..
I just watched it and i was.. How do i explain it.. Amazed.. Just watching it gave me the creeps.
Have you seen it?
What are your thoughts

I give it a 7/10

Too much walking though..

Forums: The Bar,

I've been meaning to see this one, but missed it at the theatres. I might rent the DVD one day.

Also the name of a very good album by the White Stripes!

i highly recomend this movie.. Just don't watch it all alone.. In the dark.. While your a bit depressed.. Its quite scary.. But im a wimp so.. Meh.. Its a excellent movie.. I'm bored and lonely.. Someone talk to me..?

The Columbine High story is extremely dark and disturbing...

What kinda stance does the film 'Elephant' take??
is it a full on Michael Moore style doco...? or is it much different?

does the film look deeper into the minds of Eric and Dylan (the shooters)??

Man i really wanna see this film aye, i've read alot about Columbine but have seen minimal footage. You reckon you could give me a brief overview of what the film is about/trying to say?

Yeah the movie is very desturbing.. It just basically gives a view of the emotions of some of the people in the school days befor the shootings. It a very intense movie
The movie is set in a very bland school. You have the usual. Geeks and freaks. Jocks and Populars..But it takes these characters on a whole new point of view..
It is nothing like a michael moore Doco.. It is a point of view movie.. Be prepared to sit still and listen and watch people walk and not talk.. But also look beyond the walking.. It shows how the students just wast their time at school like its not really worth it.. Its quite sad yet very shocking. The way the director portrayed the killers was intersting.. I don't know if you knew but the killers were gay. And it just amazed me how the the kids thought about things. One minute they were sitting in their room playing piano and the next min their fucking in the shower.. then watching a nazi doco and bying Guns off the internet and things like that.. Its a very Theoretical

There basicaly is no plot but its a very interesting movie. I suggest you get it ASAP!

io doesn't try to put any spin on it.... it's sparse-ness make it's even more disturbing, most of the action and dialogue is written/ adlibbed by the teen actors.

my ONLY grip is the totaly un neccisary shower scene. if you've seen the movie you'll know what i mean

Yes.. I thought that was a bit rude too..

Yes indeed the shower scene was extremely unnecessary although I did enjoy the rest of the film. It was quite disturbing though, I almost felt like I needed to walk out a couple of times because it freaked me out so much. I was a little disappointed with the ending, it didn't really wrap up the whole story the way I was expecting it to but it was still very good.

//The way the director portrayed the killers was intersting.. I don't know if you knew but the killers were gay.

Not all of the film was true-it was BASED around Columbine. Alot of the character/plot aspects were factual, but Gus couldn't just leave the film as a direct adaptation of events-he put his own spin on things,eg. that these two boys were infact gay, or (not to give away the ending..)the ending. The whole gay gag is an insight into how Gus views the characters-it's like he blames their angst on not only that they don't fit in at school, but that they don't fit in with their own idea of a real man-guns, death, heavy metal, etc. We don't ACTUALLY know if the real killers were gay or not.

WANK WANK WANK...

i don't think the shower scene was unneccesary, i think it just showed that whether you're a nazi or whatever you still get curious, i mean one of them did say "...i've never kissed anyone before".

I actually thought it was incredibly boring. I had to force myself through it, hoping it would pay off at the end, which it did not. I've always pretty much found Gus Van Sant's stuff intolerably wanky. That man really has an inflated sense of self worth.

I thought it was fairly average.

i saw it at realto when it came out and i was like WOW!
and then i got it out at the video shopand it had more of an impact the second time.
i think the shower scene is the funniest ever!

it's okay. i think it was way way way way way too slow with the whole "plot" for the mood i was in when i watched it. but it does the job i spose.

I was pretty disappointed by it... van sant did a terrible job of developing the characters of the shooters.. ordering guns online and having an old b&w hitler doco playing in the background didnt really do enough to suggest that these two kids are psycho enough to go killing everyone at their school.

I liked the idea of the kid taking the photo before they shot him.
I liked the akwardness between the characters even though they supposedly saw eachother everyday
The jock and his girlfriend were terrible actors. Would you calmly stand there and say c'mon man, you dont wanna do this.. while a guy's standing there pointing an M16 at you? You'd be freaking the fuck out- no way convincing enough.

The drunk dad should've saved the day and rescued the jock's hot girlfriend. That wouldve been perfect.
Oh, and if the guy from van wilder was in it and got blown away, I wouldve given it an A+

youd be surprised how
calm & detached you
can be in the
surreality of
a loon holding a
weapon to your
head
for a while

You're probably just used to the glamorised version of violence portrayed through typical Hollywood films. This movie isn't about dramatising the violence or the shootings but shows a more vulnerable side and presents a very creepy view of what went on. and as for the killers not being developed enough to show how psycho they really were, perhaps that's the point, were they really that psycho?evil yes, but who's to say they were 'psycho'? the fact that they were presented as pretty much everyday people (almost) is what makes this movie so creepy and what gives it it's impact and makes the film so beautiful.

and no one in the movie was an "actor"
