Schools that breed musos

Was just thinking how many of the bods involved in Fly My Pretties were at Wellington Coll with me.. then started thinking and I can name absolute truck loads of active musos who were at Wellington Coll in the early 90s, from Tim Arnold in Pluto through to Whopper Chopper organizer Chris Morley-Hall. Tim Jaray, Toby Laing, Bret McKenzie and Age Pryor were all in the same school band even!

Seems weird to me that such a conservative school would churn out so many active musos. Any thoughts? I can't decide if it just seems like a weird number because it was my school - I obviously can't talk for Welli schools like Onslow and High which in my mind seemed way more liberal cos I don't know who went there.

Forums: NZ Music,

I know Rudolph Steiner is one of them schools that churns out many an 'artistic' individual.

Be it the art of music, craft, smoking chronic, dreadlock development, bong design & production, incense science, benefit application competence, etc

but mostly benefit application competance, and Mental health issues.

haha chur dog

My school (Rotorua Boys High) produced nothing but Metallica cover bands. So sad. However - members of Pine, Minuit and Birchville Cat Motel all played in a nelson band together in high school. & I'm sure I've read about 3Ds/Straitjacket Fits/Clean school bands. I wonder if there's a high school music teacher behind every nz music movement?

Onslow had half of Shihad (I think Welly High had the other), and Fat Mannequin, and ummm ummmmm oh look there's a Tommy banner at the top of the page, at least one of their members went to Onslow.

//Fat Mannequin

lest we forget

ha ha ha Fat Mannequin formally known as 'Sacred' ha ha ha, i remember their lunch time gigs!
HALH's Mark Hamill was there too, there was a band from Onslow before I was there that had Number 1 hit - can't remember who they were but I remember that the song was a cover, kind of a poppy thing?
someone will know what it was (possibly 'holiday' something?)

ohh *click* - The Holiday Makers . . . . I think?

Tom and Jon went to High and Karl and Phil went to Onslow, if I'm not mistaken..

. . . from Hun's post above . . .

apparently Tom Watson's (HLAH & Cassette) old band 'Funkmutha' was named after one of Onslow's music teachers?

Nick Major from Autozamm & Jones

ahh..onlsow college. my old stomping ground.

ejector (1st lineup) were from onlsow as well.
Justin Clarke, an incredible guitarist who sessions for a whole heap of bands in the UK and i think even hooked up with the Video Kid a few months in the ago in the UK was from Onlsow also.

Is that the Justin who plays banjo as well? Used to play jazz at Deluxe on Sunday mornings with Tim Jaray, Toby Laing, Bret McKenzie, Dan Yeabsley, etc.?

Not certain if it was all members but at least some of Nesian Mystik and Supergroove went to western springs, my dad's mate taught both Che Fu and Stacy Jones in the same class... yes i realise a rugby league player is irrelevant in a music forum but stil just throwing it out there..

hey pappy whatsup?

Don't forget Jaden and Joel from Goodnight Nurse.

Jaden was in my form class. *blush*

Cashmere High in chch

Bic runga-Zed-ummmm theres others i cannot remember

degrees.k?
or was that another school

yeah, Cashmere was one of the best schools in Chch all right. all the Runga's, Zeds, most of Heavy Jones trio for memory. we (Hillmorton) always had dealings with them.
I think it's mainly sown to the music teachers and their enthusiasm towards helping.
I teach at Drums at Wellington Girls College now, and they don't even own an electric guitar.
The girls are screaming for a band, but without school support, it's just to hard.

Degrees K boys went to Ashburton High or something i remember

only one was ashburton.

Sacred Heart College - Dave Dobbyn n Crowded House and a few more i cant remember...

Hutt High produced Breathe/Dead End Beat. I apologise profusely.

selwyn college (akl) has supergroove, betchadupa and most of battle circus- whoop!

auckland grammar told me being in a band was a waste of time
so fuck you.

oh selwyn-hard bro ha ha

Yes vietnow. HVHS did produce Dead End Beat/Breathe. But not to forget 'Crumb' (notice the logo on the new record) and now dunedin based 'Jezebel Sundae'.

Also We Cant Forget the Mighty Disasteradio

Ah yes, I forgot about them. Funny that.

To apologise or not to apologise...
