State-operated Napster?

I was having a read of Russell Brown's column column in next weeks Listener (link below).

In short, the National Library looks to soon be providing a digital archive service which is designed to "protect New Zealand's digital memory". The problem with this is that this will also include access to copyrighted New Zealand music on their website, which would seem to effectively be like using an NZ music only Kazaa, courtesy of the NZ government.

I would be interested to hear what everyone's views on this are, especially musicians.

Forums: NZ Music,

Looks great. Hopefully similar to archive.org or something.

I definitely have no fear that copyright stuff will end up on there.

Its a great idea.
If people wish to thieve from it, well thats too bad.
Maybe they chould chargefor access, downloads, whatever?
Nat Lib vs. Amplifier.
This is free market, compotition, quick someone tell the NBR, prehaps one of their mates can make a few bob outta it.

"quick someone tell the NBR"
The NBR are mentioned throughout the article, so I'm fairly sure that they're aware of it.

from memory, the article in the Listener mentions the Chief Librarian (or similar) talking about their delivery method. It may just be that their digital music collection is made available at a low-resolution, thereby negating any fears that artists/labels will have of people downloading the tracks for burning off.

If I was working for the library, I'd be figuring out how to turn said samples into click-thru to an affiliate scheme on a proper e-commerce digital-download site (and/or online music CD store).

Anyway, I'm sure a compromise will be found, and that artists have no real need to fear. I mean, as it is, anyone can go to the library, get a CD by their favourite band, take it home and copy it. Don't hear too many labels complaining about this existing problem with libraries, do you?

An upside would be that it gives people more of a chance to be heard. The downside is they don't make money from it?
APRA has a long history of litigation so I imagine if there is any money to be had their hard working lawyers will ensure a cut is returned to the songwriter. I'm feeling quite neutral bout this one.

Anyone find the new backrings being offered on mobiles quite a trippy idea.
I'm told that in Japan they are now a multi- million dollar business.
