They Rock!

Argh, welcome to the freak show! FANTASTIC music though, and im proud to say my parents have seen them live in concert...

Nice to see most of 'em back together and in pretty good shape for that special last night . . . shame there was no Phil Judd (and no "Sweet Dreams" :( ...) . . . it's also a shame that Paul Holmes is such a condescending fuckwit. Can someone please go and kick him in the nuts for me? Cheers :P

i thought it was split enz ft. paul holmes...
i like the way tim was constantly backing away, and finally said 'go talk to neil, he likes talking about himself'
although the footage and stuff was interesting, i kind of hoped for more than three songs in an hour.
good to see my main man sean fitzpatrick there too...

Yeah, I just wanted Paul Holmes to shut up!
It was really cool to see all the old videos though. Growing up, that's how I got to know them through archive footages and documentary specials and stuff like that, and I used to think they were totally weired and strange sounding (back in the day when I thought Michel Jackson was the coolest man on earth). I still think they're weired and strange sounding but now I love them for it. I heard a collection of their songs last year when I went to see IhiFrENZy, and I was completely blown away by their music (as well as the production). True master pieces!
Yay to Split Enz!!
You guys were, and still are amazing!!!

minty, ya should check out the 30th Anniversary DVD ... there are heaps of live versions, all of the vids (i think all), interviews ... it's really great and i'm not much of a Friend of the Enz, well certainly not as much as my obsessed partner. but yeah, it's one of the best band/music DVDs i've ever seen, but i think they consulted the fanclub quite a bit when putting it together.

god i could not believe how intrusive Paul Holmes was too. he asks a question and no one ever gets to answer it ... i suspect he was asking questions just to look like he'd done his research. it wasn't even moving the plot along fastly thru the hour. Neil Finn (and Judith Tizard) seemed to handle him well though - just talk loudly over the top of the wee f*ck. But it would've been good if the whole hour was about Split Enz, not "various musicians battle with Holmes".

Grrr. Oh, and that Chris from Betchadupa's turning into a sweeet thing ... but i think i should move those sentiments to the Betchadupa forum ...

ditto on the DVD ... there seem to be a few bugs in it (it's crashed a few times for me) but a lot of great material ... and some nice hidden features ;-) I've had it for nearly month and I'm still not through it all ...

it was put together by Peter Green who runs the Fan Club and the Enz ... which explains why there's some videos missing (the ones they really hated were dropped)

Hehe

Cute Aka. Really did make me giggle :-)

I was eyeing up the 30th Anniversary CD, but now I think I might have to get the DVD. Owwww, but there are so many other CDs & special DVD editions I want at the moment... Dang it, I'll have to rewrite my letter to Santa, love & peace on earth can wait till next year.
As for Paul, I'm beginning to feel sorry for the guy, but the animation was so funny, I couldn't help laughing when I saw it, he he he

Happy 30th Anniversary Split Enz!!!

I wasn't around the first time but they have lasted for so long that i got to appreciate their music eventually.
Split Enz will always be there...partly because their songs are so damn catchy, but mainly, i think, they gave people something out of music that nobody in NZ music has ever done before, with their image and attitiudes. Split Enz took the term "Entertainers" and added a whole new meaning to it and also, in the long term, Split Enz provided us with some of the most awesome musicians after the Enz, ie. Tim and Neil Finn went solo, as well as Mike Chunn...they've all done great things.

I also agree that it would have been nice to see them play more than three songs. I live not far away from there, about 5 minutes and i was so tempted to go down there and try and listen to some more from outside. :)
But it was however a really really good tribute to them and deserved it. Congrats Split Enz!

i think paul holmes ruined the night but shit, having never seen them on tv or live before it was great.

ya wonder why there arent more bands like this in nz.

Dumb question, but does anyone happen to know the chords for 'Dirty Creature'?

Who saw the top 10 Split Enz songs on C4 the other night? Very enjoyable for those of us who don't have their DVD ... pretty pointless for those that do, I spose! But flip, you forget they wrote so many cool songs ...

Split Enz = fuggin wuckud. Time & Tide being the apex of the swing in my opinion. How awesome is "Make Sense Of It", "Lost For Words", and yes whenever I want to get my expat friends and I crying it has to be "Six months In A Leaky Boat" on the accoustic.
"Sandy Ellen", "Take A Walk" - chest beatingly good stuff. God that whole album is freakin magic. "Log Cabin Fever"... anyone else love that album as much as me as well? Without a doubt one of the top 5 albums ever made as far as I'm concerned...
One of my earliest memories at about age 3 is the video to "I Got You" which for some reason I found really scary, can't really think why now looking at it...

// I found really scary, can't really think why now looking at it...

were there mirrors in the vid?

Yeah sort of, there's like this budget kind of eerie open window with a white curtain blowing in all spooky like, and Neil is doing his thing singing it while the band are in a picture on the wall with their backs to the viewer. Kind of a tech vid for it's time I 'spose (1979 or something).
I think it may have been because the picture on the wall is alive and moving that I found scary. Maybe it was the window. Maybe it was just Neil...wooooooaaaaaaaaaaaaaaarrrrrrgggghhhhhhhhhhhhhhh!!!!!!!!!!!!!

what do all yous think is the best SE album?

I'm yet to become totally familiar with early albums but personally, True Colours is the shit, totally cool...

i mean it man! so someone answer me. What's the best SE album?

True Colours! I agree, it is the shit! That album has strong themes of Anxiety, Depression and Paranoia, and while I do not want to glolify these things, but they are a strong feature in human existence. I think Frenzy and Waiata are also great albums.

In my opinion, Time & Tide is definitely their best. For second best I would actually jump back to the 70s and the excellent album Dizrythmia.

P.S. There are quite active Split Enz (+ Crowded House, Finn bros etc) forums at www.frenzforum.com.

//For second best I would actually jump back to the 70s and the excellent album Dizrythmia.

i've heard it a bit and it's pretty darn good.
their last album 'I walk away' is cool, it's qite neil finn-ish, well that may be becoz tim isnt on it, but noel crombie and paul hester provide great drums throughout

its good

excuse my ignorance but what is Crossroads?

It's probably a misunderstanding of the song "Crosswords", from the Dizrythmia album

"Bad mouth crosswords, need a muzzle
I'm down you're across
I can't seem to solve this puzzle
I turn while you toss

Crosswords puzzle me it's frightening
We're still friends but we're still fighting"

crosswords hold keys to our perception
