Just wondering what people make of this.
We were at the Masonic the other night waiting to get onstage and play. We were waiting cause Waikato was playing against Wellington in the rugby and the show was put off for an hour or so. Jamie from Naquadah pointed out that only in NZ would bands get shunted back so the rugby could be watched with the reverence nzers give it. I agree with him, at least from my experience. I've come across this at the prospect once or twice, a few times at the Masonic, once at the crook... other band members have had this at the hilly too, where they split the show down the middle to let the punters watch the rugby- the first band going on at 8pm and the last not hitting the stage till almost 2am.
I'm interested to see if this is a New Zealand thing or perhaps more an Auckland thing. Does the show stop or get moved elsewhere for the national pastime?
Also what have people noticed overseas of a similar nature?

Nah, I don't reckon the problem's rugby-worship - it's pubs trying to make more money out of double-booking. I've seen a couple of places that have tried to book two different non-sport functions before, much to the chagrin of the organisers of the later event.
As for sports-worship in NZ, british pubs wouldn't bother booking bands on a football night (well, those that have live music); and I'd bet some pubs would kick out a pre-booked band purely on the grounds that they were wearing the wrong colour. There are pubs in Chelsea where Santa Claus would get booted out.

I was absolutely shocked and appalled one night to see that Deschlers was screening some kind of sport. No wonder the place is empty these days.

Well theres a difference between Pubs and Venues, if you play at a local pub of course people are going down there to watch the rugby, it happens down here in wellington, not at the Valve or Indigo or anything, i hate to admit it but nz is a rugby country, all the rugga buggas would prefer to watch the rugby than a band and theres a bigger majority of them. SORRY

have had to cut sound check short for rugby at Bodega in the past. can't do much about it; as long as it's over by the start of the gig (and they've taken the giant screen away!)

Some like both, but just not at the same time is all.
I don’t really see what the big deal is, the games are finished by 9.30pm (unless it’s being played overseas), surely this isn’t too late for a band to start playing?

The Big Question comes out:
Is it possible to like music and sport? Or are the two mutually exclusive? Could this be a topic in its own right?!

That game (apart from who was playing) wasn't something that just suddenly popped up, the dates & times of the games are planned and made public long before the season even starts. long before your gig was planned I'd imagine? I'm not sure why you seem so surprised that their was rugby on at that time or why you are surprised that you'd have to wait, you are in New Zealand after all

and if you were in America - you'd be waiting for Baseball / Basketball to finish , Canada - the Ice Hockey, Australia - Aussie Rules / Leauge and the rest of the world - Soccer
hell if you were in Brazil you could get shot for playing during the soccer?

Not surprised so much as interested if it happens across NZ or if it is just an Auckland thing. The one thing that did surprise me was, while playing at the Poedium, the bar staff didn't think of turning off the music vids they had going (projecting onto a screen behind the bands) before the bands arrived but that is another story entirely.

pffft! Now I think of it, only in New Zealand would we watch the rugby at our local whilst getting the evils from a buncha stringy teenagers with guitars and chuck taylors.

I was staying at a "hotel" (though I use the term extremely loosely) in Wellington last year, and they shut the restaraunt for the night because the Hurricanes were playing, and like hell the staff were gonna miss the game. Didn't really bother me as I wasn't planning on eating there...um...EVER, but I still thought it was interesting.

I was also in one of the bands playing that night, and yes - it was unfortunate that we were the after-match entertainment for the few that decided to stick round after the game. Also unfortunate that whoever was managing the evening (Intergalactic? if that's the case I hardly call it 'management') seemed to think that it was a perfectly good idea to smack the game and the gig right next to each other. This never works! But they've never really been interested in what works or not...
It is becoming more and more apparent to me that the people that run those nights are solely interested in getting punters through the door, paying their $5 and making a killing from the bar, rather than putting on a good night. If that was the case they wouldnt be asking bands to drive all the way over to the shore to play a 20 minute fuckin set.
Dont get me wrong, I love sitting around my local drinking pints and watching a game, but I was appalled by the organisation of that night. Absolutely appalled.

Unfortunately it's one of those things you get used to, especially if you're in a covers band. You basically have to set up at 4pm/5pm before the kitchen opens, wait around for four odd hours until the rugby finishes, then start playing (with minimal soundcheck) around 930pm. It's OK if you don't have a day job and can get to the venue and set up all your gear, but if you're working it's very tough, especially in Auckland's lovely peak hour traffic.
Having said that, you get all the rugga buggas hanging around listening to you play and yell out "play us that drink some more piss song" or "do you know any ACDC?"
Okay so it all comes down to planning & ...
Okay so it all comes down to planning & time management then?
And if your in a covers band, because of all your planning you now know that there are going to be the rugga buggas there, so you crank out your version of ‘You Shook Me All Night Long’ they all sing along, they are loving it and rocking out.
