Is there any way this topic is not going to degenerate into a stereotyping, mud slinging, fuck da pigs topic?
'Cause that kind of thing really bugs me.
Lughead - the people that give you tickets are entirely different to the Police. They have different jobs and duites, are staffed by different people and even have different coloured cars. You have no ground to slag off Police because you got caught speeding by a traffic cop.
And the standard response time of ten hours - surely this is to do with under staffing rather than laziness, as was implied?
And maybe understaffing is to do with a a government which doesn't much care for crime prevention, and a nasty stereotype of Police as corrupt, lazy and useless civil servants. With the image they have, who would really want to join up?
What happened to the days when Police were respected members of the community, and could be trusted to help you out when you were in trouble. Is the NZ Police really that bad?
But changing tack completely, i heard on the radio this monring that our highest paid civil servant is Police Commissiner Rob Robson with a salary of over $400,000 a year. Which is prety freakin excessive.
There endeth rant.
I think they went from being pretty much totally seperate in the 'old days', to being merged until a couple of years ago when they were seperated by car colour and frontline staff - but they're still more combined than they used to be.
I don't think they differ by training, but certain staff are now assigned to traffic patrol only, so it has become a little less integrated. I don't think 400k is too excessive, given the size of the organisation and the responsibility that comes with it.
//Lughead - the people that give you tickets are entirely different to the Police. They have different jobs and duites, are staffed by different people and even have different coloured cars. You have no ground to slag off Police because you got caught speeding by a traffic cop.
Firstly a boast – 10+ years driving and not one ticket, not even a parking ticket (**touches wood**)
Different to the Police –
Well the ones that I see out the window of work get out of standard police cars – not highway patrol or community cars, they wear standard police uniforms – including the big fluro jackets with POLICE written on the back, so I can’t really be blamed for mistaking them for real police now can I?
Usually there are at least four of them, which wouldn’t bother me if they were policing high risk or black spot area’s, but they are policing centre city 50km intersections at peak times, so even if you wanted to it would be hard to speed, very rarely I have I ever seen any accidents let alone any fatal accidents at these intersections, so yes it seems strange to me that recently these areas should be so heavily & regularly policed in such a fashion, surely these officers would be better used either policing roads regarded as actual black spots or attending crime scenes in under 10 hours – surely one of the four officers it takes to ticket someone for not using their indicator should have the skills to attend a burgled house and write up the report?
Anywhos . . .The police officers that I have had to deal with like when my car got pinched etc have been great, they even managed to get my car back, but I still find it funny that a police station got robbed.

Sorry Lughead, was a wee bit tetchy this mornin' pre-salami sandwich and juice. My dad's a cop and it's something we talk about quite a lot, the fact that people automatically assume things about him and get their defences up because of experiences they've had with traffic cops.
It is very funny a police station got robbed...I can be a bit humourless sometimes.
Also, well done for nver getting a speeding ticket. That's quite a feat.
ah, the point is that a stealth car isn't cool. My brother drives a nissan bluebird with a kiddie seat in the back that could burn off all those boy racers in a heartbeat. Combined with the suit he wears to work, he never, ever gets pulled over. The speed cameras still get him but..
//ah, the point is that a stealth car isn't cool. My brother drives a nissan bluebird
Okay, i was waaay off with my thinking of a stealth car, he he???
But do I have the suit, a nice but average car that doesn’t go – rmmmmm ‘pish’ rrmmmm ‘pish’ with blow off valves and it doesn’t have neon lights & shit, so stealthy enough I suppose, but I don’t have the kiddie seats . . . maybe thats the trick?

tesse is right - the cops dont care about public safety any more - just hurling people into gulags for possessing the slightest amount of herbal medications and giving out tickets for slightly exceeding the speed limit (speeding, WOF and Rego, and vehicle feature tickets are nothing more than cash cows to fund friday nights piss up, they have nothing to do with road safety)
as for the MoT - i can vividly remember those California style B&W Patrol cars - I Say bring em back, put mor epolice resources into fighting REAL Crimes ie. with victims rather than relying on a cash cow for Friday after works piss up by picking on some innocent motorist just cos they dont have a current Rego. - After all the LTSA just sell your personal details to finiance cos - but thats another story.

Urban myth?
Anyone got some info on this?
Only if they have plastic bullets. Airport security are particularly alert for such things. As a word of advice, do not buy cute 5mm high souvenir porcelain cups. They can really make your holiday a pain.
not exactly sorry, I remember reading about it the other day in the paper, it was something like 4 or 6 odd wepons, like air rifles & .22's maybe a handgun?
nasty stuff to go missing anyway.

While i strongly condemn any form of theft of the firearms and hope the fuckers who committed this crime are brought to justice, it just comes to show the consequence of NZ's most ludicrus firearms laws - yes I Agree that tighter gun control laws disarm only the law abiding citizen willing to defend his home from home invaders/burglars but rearms to the teeth bank robbers and potential mass murderers such as David Gray. Prior to the Arms Act. 1983 - New Zealands most significant arms control law. There had only been one mass shooting back in 1941. (Stanley Graham on the west coast) Since 1983 how many mass murders have we had? a grand total of 5, surely I Agree that we must do more to get the guns off the hands of criminals but disarming the general public (esp. farmers who live out of reach of any police presence) is causing more harm than good esp. how it takes 48-72 hours to respond to a burglary or home invasion with only a 25% chance of ever apprehending the offender/s, where as the police have a minimum hourly quota in terms of how many tickets are given out.
Again i condenm strongly the theft of the guns. I Do not in nayway condone firearm related crime, It just NZ's gun laws have created more problems than have solved.

yes - The Arms Act. 1983 is the most significant firearms legislation in New Zealand to date and is backed up by the Firearms Act. 1992 passed after the Aramoana massacre.
New Zealand also has one of the highest rates of gun ownership in the western world.

Yeah, but also if they die in a car crash I'll demand that all private motor vehicles be banned. Or if they get beaten to death with a cricket bat, well, how well do cricket bats serve us?....... Jesus man, while it's possible to kill with a legally owned firearms, mass murders with .22 bolt actions just don't happen. More likely that gun deaths are the result of accidents, which would again be case enough for thier banishment according to you I guess. Or maybe the idea that people should be trusted with potentially dangerous weapons just offends you,,,
Hullo Rdor,
Probably no-one in the Western World knows less about cars than myself, however, to the best of my knowledge, they where not designed for the explicit purpose of killing things.
This I think is an important difference, however our difference of opinion may be that you believe that it is a "Human Right" or "Personal Freedom" to have private gun ownership, which superseeds "The Communitys" right to not be shot, threatened, violated.
I am not advocating Gun control, i'd just like to see people making decisions, regardless, or even in spite of "The law", which positivly impact on the lives of "The community". All of the parrells [or at least the issues i throw in the same basket], in an above post, are not solvable by any legislation, the technology, the want, the means are there, that will not change. What must change is the value structure that places my personal freedoms, no matter the endangerment to others, as superior to all other considerations.
Guns/Firearms fall fairly and squarely into that pile for me.
Now "Classifaction" of guns.
Sorry Im really not very up with it, Im thinking a .22 is a small gun, primitve? As opposed to an AK47?
So certain Guns are OK because they really couldnt endanger many people because of the way their made/construct/rate of fire/power? I'll again be blunt, Weapons Makers are the Agents of Satan. My right to earn is worth more than anyone elses right to Life.

Of course it's possible to kill a person with almost any type of gun, but i'd say that a low calibre rifles are not mande for that purpose. They are made for hunting, target shooting etc... hence your argument that gun manufacturers that make these sort of weopons are peddling death is suspect. Why not ban archery while your at it. Ok that guy in the pakuranga Pizza Hut was killed by a sawn off .22, but then how many people are stabbed, doused with lighter fluid etc. I don't know much about guns, calibre refers to the diamter of the barrel/bullet. As far a I know it's next to impossible to own a military style weapon or a semi automatic pistol in NZ .
um you are. Banning ownership of all firearms, making hunting and range shooting illegal, also probably because killing animals and eating meat are also wrong and shouldn't be encouraged...
But then again, since when did making things illegal work? If the bad guys aren't gonna register their guns, and go round cappin people, you think they'll care that the cops won't let you have a gun? Guns on the black market is the last thing you need. Way to make sure -only- the bad fullas have them.

My understanding is that they're like different branches of the same company. But they definitely have different functions.
