Do musicians need a manager?
If so what are the essential skills and knowledge required for a manager? Personal attributes?
What services should the manager provide for the artist? How much authority should the artist give the manager?
Any experiences... good or bad.
As an artist what are your expectations of a manager?

The Band or Musicians clearly state their deired goals/objectives
The Manager provides a number of plans/schemes to get to that point.
Managers recieve bad press because the Band is dis-jointed in their "wants".
The band is annoyed because the Manager has no means to provide the service the Band wants.
If the band cannot agree on direction, it is pointless retaining a Manager.
Listening, Resorucing, the ability to Network, Computer and Phone Skills, a level of respect for the music being performed, and the ability to clearly articulate the plan and its progress to the Band would appear to be imperitive skills for any self-stylded manager.
If the band wishes to "Make It", then pimping, soliciting, cronyisim, nepotisim, bandwagonism, rackerterring, fellaito, mindless charity apparences, grandstanding, and endorsement oppurtunity explotation, would be Compulsory attributes.
If $ the push, then the music is secondary, hence it matters not a whit wether the Manager likes product. Best option, an "outsider" who is genuinely interested in NZ Music scene, has empathy for the individual bands "style", and is prepared to work for Sweet FA, cos thats what the bands getting.
Highly Reccomended.
Carla Potter, enthusiastic, opinionated, honest, works, listens, and provides not only options, but the paths available to the Bands finish line.
